I wonder how long it will be before we see Coronation St and/or EastEnders failing to clear 5m overnights on Christmas Day. I don't think they reached 6m last Christmas Day.
EastEnders 5.7m

Coronation Street 5.9m

Emmerdale I think ws just under 5m.

If its true EE's Xmas ep is low key, I'm not sure how it can rise from last year unless its gets an extra boost from the surrounding schedule.

They seem to be putting more effort into NYD to launch a new successful year on BBC1.

All the companions have had single year contracts, by the way. It simply saves hassle on either side if they get a better offer for example. If Capaldi does leave (and I'm by no means suggesting that I would wish that) it would be frankly hornswoggling if the companion was to go too. That it has never happened before emphasises the importance of some anchor of continuity from one side of the regeneration to the other.
This is a good post although I must point out that surely that happened when Matt Smith took over and Karen Gillan joined at the same time - when the previous full series had been Tennant and Tate. Also a new showrunner there as well, of course. It's certainly true that the companion has remained every other time the Doctor has changed, though, mostly as you say to ensure a bit of a continuity.

The fact that the BBC sneak in a week of rpt's in the middle of a new run, and they still rate the same.
What's sneaky about it? They are billed as such in the TV guides and never listed as new programmes. The Chase does exactly the same thing. And so what if they rate the same? Maybe some viewers like to watch them again. Many others certainly don't watch it every day so they won't have seen them all. The audience is not sat there in a brain-dead stupor, and it's patronising to them to suggest so.

It's a very busy night on TV tonight.

Children in Need on BBC1, the soaps and a 90 minute extended I'm a Celeb on ITV, Brand new Gogglebox and The Last Leg on Channel 4

Something is surely to get squeezed out.

Thanks

Pointless going up despite being a rpt. Quite unfair really, and very sneaky of the BBC.

The Chase on the other hand is blocks of new episodes, and blocks of rpts.
Pointless are still on new episodes this week, Monday is back to repeats.

Unfortunately it will probably be Ch5, despite their best schedle of the week.

I agree with your view, it's disgraceful Pointless air so many repeats.

Nobody reads the listings description for Pointless to see the (R) as everybody knows what it is.

The Chase repeats tend to be at more logical times, such as school holidays, not at random during peak viewing weeks.

C5 will struggle up until 10pm but I'm expecting the George Groves fight to rate pretty well. He's a big name by terrestrial standards, and there's already a fair amount of social media activity around it.

What would you rather then? A repeat of something else? Dead air time (they could revive the test card!) And please don't trot out the ridiculous argument that they should make more shows as though that was a mere matter of turning a dial up to 11 at the production company and a BBC exec saying 'sod the budget'!

Didn't the main channels use to have about 25% of their schedule made up of repeats? You hardly ever get repeats on the main channels now.

Kids today... Don't know they're born...

Didn't IAC get one of its lowest ever ratings against CIN several years ago? I don't think it will be the same result tonight.

Btw, that Doctor Who clip was pants. THese clips do the show NO favours at all. I imagine that discouraged people from watching it, not encouraged them.

Try something else. A new quiz, like ITV do.

I think it's fair to say that the I'm a Celebrity producers have played a blinder. Not sure people can accuse the series of being boring after tonight's episode.

I suppose it depends on your perspective - having not watched for a few years, I gave it a go this year - was actually enjoying it till tonight.
Enter Danny me-me-me Baker & Martin drama-queen whatsisname - hold a live trial which (because it ended up being completely one sided) actually got tedious - oh, and of course, now there are "teams" - the bitching is gonna start.
I've lost interest in it now.

So if it carried on, with them all getting along, all nicey, you would enjoy that for 3 weeks? I'm pretty sure ratings would start to go down as viewers declared it 'boring', which they have already.

One to miss I think. Danny 'Ego' Dire is not worthy of my time.
I look forward to some pro-BBC commentary from you going forward.

Oh behave H. You are on a right old BBC rant today.
You seriously think these sketches are done to encourage viewers to watch the actual programme ?
Watch CIN now, couple of ITV presenters to make you more at home

I'll still watch it but Baker and Roberts have made it worse. Can't stand either of them.
