I agree about Saturdays, it is tough. The 6-8pm block is a nightmare for them. They need to just keep plugging away with new shows. Ideally they'd do what BBC1 has with McIntyre and find a hit in an easier time of year and then move it. Still easier said than done though.”

That is correct. It's what they should have done with GFI and MTP and why I'd give them both a second series. I doubt that'll happen as I get the impression that Lygo was 'happy' to see these shows fail. Rather like some dramas. If so, he may still reup Magician as that's doing okay.

The easiest solution is to move XF to spring 2018 and let BGT look after the autumn. But that's a bandaid solution. I don't know if Magician can be live, that'd certainly give a major edge to it.

6:30 - Family Fortunes
7:30 - Magician Live.
8:30 - XF
10 - Ross.

If need be, bring the three earlier shows forward to quarter past the hour.

Sundays aren't a problem for ITV as, sadly, Planet Earth will probably be the last huge nature show on TV for many years. Maybe very many years.

ITV has a problem on Saturdays in autumn. BBC1 may have a problem on Saturdays for most of the rest of the year.

What the BBC has, and can afford to do, is have shows aimed at the older demographic meaning they have a naturally higher starting base. It's the same reason why Coronation Street and Emmerdale are holding up better than EastEnders - they skew older.

But it's interesting you mention variety as, in many ways, you're absolutely right but in other ways...

Put it this way; across the year ITV have 180 minutes of Emmerdale and soon to be 180 minutes of Coronation Street per week. That's 360 minutes including ads of the same shows. Is Tonight regularly shown? If so, that makes it 390.

The BBC have 180 minutes of The One Show, 120 minutes of EastEnders, generally 60 minutes of Holby City and 50 minutes of Casualty. The breaks the latter two take are relatively miniscule, as is The One Show's summer break which they sometimes fill up with 'The Best Of'. That's 410 minutes taken up by the same shows.

So the BBC may have more variety but their schedule is far more rigid too.

No. But the signals for HD are often a miniscule of a second out. Remember the old clock they used before the News before digital? Well, one reason they got rid of the clock was because the time was about half a second out of sync on digital than it was on analogue.

Now TV pictures are broadcast in digital and very rarely you might experience that same half second glitch when the pictures are transferred from SD to HD. In the same way the glitch happened in the clock when it went from analogue to digital. It is very rare though and had the remembrance festival been broadcast live last week, there is the possibility the same problem might have occurred then too. The acoustics of a building can add to the problem.

If X Factor held its audience over the years as well as other talent shows this wouldn't be a conversation. It has been comfortably ahead of Merlin, Atlantis and Doctor Who on Saturday. On Sunday it was always ahead of Antiques Roadshow. Now it's barely ahead on overnight ratings while ratings BBC1 have had in those timeslots have stayed more or less the same for several years. BBC1 are bringing their own audience to the night and X Factor isn't destination viewing like it used to be. X Factor's problems are closer to home and we all know it.

And Countryfile and Antiques are blocks on Sunday. Actually, the lottery quizzes block a lot of Saturday. The BBC has had far less variety on weekends and has massively gained from some change this month .

Disagree entirely, now they've got rid of Bruce the dreadful cheesey covers band are the only thing left making the show feel awkward.. why they must insist on using cruise ship singers I don't know.

Are you kidding? Dave Arch's orchestra and singers are awesome. You do realise it was the band and singers playing "Gangnam Style" last week don't you? I couldn't tell the difference, they were so good.

Thanks Lewie.

Extra viewers coming to TV last night looking at those ratings for X Factor and Casualty. That's what I'm A Celebrity does and Strictly always gets a boost for Blackpool week....but that's a hell of a boost! One of the best non final ratings in years.

I agree. Hair, make-up, lighting, costume, Dave Arch and The Strictly Singers (Hayley, Lance, Tommy and Andrea) all contribute to make BBC Strictly the best production currently on British television. The band are so versatile. They have so much material to learn each week too. Proper pros.

BBC1 had a good night, but they usually do when the skew old like the above. They couldn't really go wrong with McIntyre following SCD.

The rating for Pointless, despite scheduled in at the last minute, does it suggest the audience would have watched anything the BBC put in that slot given its sandwich between BBC News and SCD?

Meet The Parents continues to rate apallingly. Its funny isn't it. ITV go through so many LE shows in a year, most flop, very few actually rate over 4m. BBC1 do very few LE shows, just showing the same every year, but of the few new LE shows they show, they equal the same number of new hits found as ITV, despite showing less.

This obsession with 'only old people watch BBC One' is wrong with respect. BBC One's success is down to the fact that it appeals to all ages, is filled with variety, the quality and standards are there too. It is a channel for all the family.

True. But they do have a larger older audience that enables most of their programming output to rate well.

For instance SCD has almost the same 16-24 skew as Meet The Parents with just 2m. Therefore the majority of SCD audience is older viewers, which enables it to stay strong.

I am by no means trying to degrade the older audience, I'm just explaining why BBC1 in most slots stays solid. Then when they try to skew young (The Getaway Car) it flops. In a similar way to ITV with MTP. But ITV has less of a strong base as BBC1. MTP didn't even launch well.

Or you could come at it from the angle of: the highest Saturday show since the first live show and the second consecutive week of rising. despite stronger competition.
But you won't because of your dumb & petty agenda.

It's not really a problem. It's standard practice to just look at the overnights as normal and not worry about it. BARB present a figure with them stripped out later on.

TXF's overnights from 2008-2011 included ads. Nobody moaned about it then.

No one's saying only old people watch BBC One, but they skew the headline ratings.

As for 'family', a typical young family (two adults under 45 with two children) are more likely to watch XFactor over SCD.
