Stories should be ranked in order of importance. Medals wins have never been the most important story of the day. Nothing to do with my preferences and it seems the editors of C4 and Sky would seem to agree that they should be lower down the running order.
No. It's the BBC News, not the BBC Olympics News. For something that's on 12 hours+ a day it does not need to be the lead story on the news virtually every night. They're games - When have games ever been the most important thing in the world? Except to children obviously... The "wider view" is to put the news reporting of the games after the real news, not as the manufactured self-aggrandising lead-story purely so the Beeb can bathe in the reflected glory. Here are the headlines: Theresa May, PM is still new. But she is on holiday in Switzerland and had a little walk with her husband and probably ate strudel and bought a cuckoo clock. Our reporter is there on the frontline to tell us how it is all going: Reporter: "Yes, it's all very dull here really as the PM has just sat down to dinner and is likely to go to bed within the hour. Back to you Fiona. The US election is still happening in November. Trump and Clinton are still firing word wars with each other. Trump is behind in the polls but there's a long way to go before November. Several Middle Eastern countries are still at war with each other, but there are no developments as the same occurrences occurred today as occurred yesterday. Our reporter was on the scene but has now gone awol, probably going to watch Great Britain's performance at the Olympics, which in fairness, is what everyone is really interested in. More on that later. Jeremy Corbyn and Owen Smith are still slagging each other off and the Labour Party is still facing an existential crisis. However, this won't be resolved until a new leader is elected and this is STILL happening on September 24th. There are a few boring bits to mention, such as A level results (why is this more important than team GB? kids go to school, take exams and pass! Is that newsworthy? Editor? Director? Can you tell me? What? Oh, OK. I'll move on. EU leaders are on their summer recess. Our reporter is live in Brussels. Reporter: Yes, it's true. EU leaders are on summer vacation. They're back in September. Back to you Fiona. The Queen is in Balmoral with the Duke of Edinburgh. Other members of the Royal family are there too. Brexit was still voted for last June and people are still spending in shops. Finally, the Olympics. Yes, viewers, we know you've watched Midsomer Murders on ITV and haven't caught up yet, but Straker said the dull bits were more important! But team GB are actually doing OK. You should have stayed on ITV. They had the Olympics as their main headline, and Sky News even had a breaking news banner to tell viewers team GB had won silver in a kayak! But, now we've run out of time as we need to have another dull round up of the really boring headlines before telling you what might or might not happen with tomorrows weather. |

Naga Munchetty announced this morning as doing Strictly.
They've ticked the 'must have someone from BBC Breakfast' box twice this year, as they'd already announced Ore Oduba as also taking part. |

Glad to see Team GB's continued success as the top story on the BBC News at Six this evening. There is no other news worthy of leading a news bulletin at the moment.

A wryly observed post, summing up the situation very well.
How very, very staunch of the both of you. Nice essay, WW. The longer it went on the more you inadvertently validated my stance. Quote:

... Guess what? Not the lead story on C4 now. This is what they went with: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2016...e-of-the-worl/ |

I heard that, but of course the BBC didn't do that, it was Vicki Michelle getting a bit overexcited. As you say, if they're choosing sitcoms based on "PC" reasons, you would suggest Till Death Us Do Part and Are You Being Served would have seemed pretty unlikely choices. More likely is the fact they're already remaking a Lloyd and Croft sitcom in Are You Being Served, so why remake another one? Let alone the fact they did an Allo Allo revival less than a decade ago. |

Staunch, long-standing defenders of the BBC staunchly defend the corporation yet again in the face of their dereliction of duty when it comes to broadcasting real news in order of importance.
How very, very staunch of the both of you. Nice essay, WW. The longer it went on the more you inadvertently validated my stance. Yes, it's called "perspective". Perhaps if they have any left over they could sell the BBC some of it? Guess what? Not the lead story on C4 now. This is what they went with: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2016...e-of-the-worl/ You do not like the BBC, therefore you do not like the Oylimpics, and the fantastic success of the Great British team. When you say sell the BBC off, your true agenda shows... Now " if" they sell of the BBC is a topic for the Broadcasting forum, but, sold to who? What controls? His funded, as Advertising can't fund it, there isn't another money to go around, ITV has cut programme budgets already due to lower anticipated income, the BBC if it took adverts would take money from ITV, C4, C5, Sky etc.... |

As it did in 2012. I guess though, that'll be fine. It isn't the BBC - which you hate. |

You obviously have been asleep these past twelve months. I have done my fair share of criticising the BBC. Shame you missed it. Channel Four goes with a story that is not really "News" but something that is a factual development that has already occurred, but nonetheless, no doubt, catering for the audience that watches Channel Four News. A bit like Newsnight - rarely going with the mainstream headlines. Guess what? At 6pm, BBC News and Sky News led with Brownlee's Gold medal! ITV also went with that at 6.30pm too. How extraordinary. UK News Channels catering for the interests of UK citizens! Whatever next!

LOL thats true. Not being funny, but these shutdowns don't work. You can't FORCE people to take part in sports, you can't FORCE people to go out.
If ITV were really serious about this "project", they would have given an hour where people actually noticed, and not while people are at work, shopping, cooking Breakfast or watching BBC News until 10am. |

This is all getting a bit tedious. The rating thread is not really the right place to be arguing about news content is it ?
Either way, The Olympics is once every four years, if its dominanting BBC News then so be it. I'm sure if there was a major story then it would cover it first. |
