I think the biggest ever gap between EastEnders and Emmerdale head to head must be this from Thursday 18th February 2010:

19:30 - EastEnders: 10.77m (41.5%)
* peak: 11.4m (42.1%) @ 20:00

20:00 - Emmerdale: 4.27m (15.7%)
* 20:00 to 20:25 - 4.2m (15.2%)

Some Christmas telly news!

There is a little bit of information regarding BBC1's Christmas Ident.

I suspect that there's to be more than one ident. The slogan is:

I have no idea how it all fits in together, but it does seem like it's going to be totally different this year.

It is rumoured to launch on 1st December, but this has not been confirmed by the BBC, but by Caroline Oakes who plays "mum" in the ident.

There was an interesting moment on Big Show last week with the "soap or nope" segment, when a lady of mature years had to pick out soap stars (or not) on a conveyer belt (before a surprise was sprung). It made me smile when she was asked if she liked soaps, she said yes and said Coronation Street and Emmerdale and McIntyre had to gently remind her that it was the BBC and perhaps she ought to mention Eastenders too. To which she said "yes, sometimes" (or similar). Just one person and one moment ofcourse, but I thought it sought of summed up Eastenders situation at the moment, its kind of become a somewhat throwaway third choice, something that can be discarded if needs be.

I can garuntee you Let It Shine will rate well. All those older viewers who watched TVUK on BBC1, will stay on BBC1. I don't see them moving channels just because TVUK has.

Let It Shine IS the type of programming that would be 2-3m on ITV or lower on another channel. Its BBC stuff through and through.

TVUK will likely beat it in the head to head, but Let It Shine will not collapse. But it will have a big older audience to keep its ratings over 5m.

Was reading Bella mag and they have a feature on Dawn French and Little Big shots and they are calling it a Sunday night show.

What film would BBC1 show there though? I'm certain it'll be:

6pm Pointless Celebrities
6.50pm Let It Shine

The BBC will want Let It Shine to get the jump on TVUK, so I think they will pull it forwards.

I expect ITV will want The Voice to play out at 8pm ? What's leading in / out ? Ninja Warrior & Take Me Out ? The Voice might also get Sat / Sun doubles ?

Let it Shine will probably start earlier than The Voice with an overlap.

I think it would be a BIG mistake to schedule TVUK at 8pm. Then they get themselves into the situation of surrounding the big show with smaller stuff, some of its flops, TVUK starts to falter (like TXF) and then they have no room to launch big new ent. after TVUK.

I think ITV should use TVUK as a launch pad to starts the night off and lead into new shows after. If they go for Saturday, which I think they will now. They need TVUK to be like SCD is to BBC1.

I think Sat/Sun doubles would be good.

Take Me Out should perhaps be moved to the early evening.

There are a few examples on those two articles (you'll have to read past all the Neighbours stuff in the second link), and there are other occasions of bigger gaps than last night's, too, but I don't have a full list.

Looks as though Emmerdale has lost a lot of the casual viewers it used to attract to its hour-long episodes, over the last ten years.

But they don't have new shows for after do they ? It's likely to be some combination of Ninja Warrior, The Voice & Take Me Out for Saturday's in January. Little Big Shots seems like a Sunday show ?

Saturday Kitchen was tendered out to Cactus after Anthony Worrall Thompson and Prospect Pictures defected to ITV. I think Question Time is already tendered but Mentorn has remain the producer of it for a long time

All BBC shows are now under protection as part of the new Charter agreement. BBC Studios are equally able to bid for ITV shows if they come up for tender but any indie that now bids to produce current BBC Shows only, (not commissioned by BBC for indies to make such as Poldark ) will need to realise that the show they are producing remains, 100% the property of the BBC.

I'm not sure on the rights issue surrounding Saturday Kitchen but I know Question Time the programme name is copyrighted to the BBC.

Six years ago a clash saw ratings at 8m and 6m. Now 6m is the norm. I wonder if in a few years time 6m and 4m will be looked back on in the same way, in other words, 4m will be the norm for the soaps.

Already 4m is a hit LE show for itv so the big2 might be happy with 4m in 2021.

I agree it would be a big mistake to launch TVUK at 8pm following Let it Shine particularly because these shows tend to overlap, people who've sat through an hour/hour and a half of one singing show aren't about to switch channels for another, they're going to record it, catch up later or simply not bother. At least head to head TVUK has brand recognition to potentially see off Let it Shine (It managed until last year to edge ahead of takeaway and if Let it shine is that successful then the beeb will be doing cartwheels.)

They still have SNT for another series don't they? Why would they put The Voice on Saturday's only to move it in February for SNT- Despite what the tabloids say I'm 99% certain it'll land on Sunday's with Dance Dance Dance going against Let it Shine.

Yes but my point is that the shows ITV studios make for the BBC,eg University Challenge or Eggheads make considerable profit for ITV,and its quiet possible bidding to make say Eastenders in future would also be very profitable for them.

BIB: No! They wouldn't be. University Challenge, Eggheads are NOT BBC Owned shows. They are shows commissioned by the BBC to be made by indies for broadcast on the BBC. ITV could show University Challenge themselves if they wanted to. They also own the name and format so get all the money from overseas sales or otherwise.

EastEnders is a BBC Show. It will REMAIN 100% a BBC owned show and the BBC will retain all rights and overseas sales money. All that will happen is that the BBC will pay an indie to make it for for them instead of forking out the costs themselves. But that indie will not be able to sell, cancel or profit from the show. This was part of the new charter agreement. ITV will NOT profit from making EastEnders. Therefore it is not worth them bidding to produce it because it will be of no commercial viability for them. A small indie however will benefit because it enhances their status and gives them a shoe-in into the BBC and other broadcasters. BBC Studios will also be able to bid to produce their own shows too.

I assumed Nightly Show was a weekday only show.
Little Big Shots should be 7pm on a Sunday. That's a natural spot and worked so well for NBC. Putting it on a Wednesday would be a mistake. If they really want to put LE on a Wednesday then maybe that time could be trialled for The Voice. Test the water for the XF.

20:30 could work for Dance³. 22:00 on a Saturday seems the right place for Lethal Weapon and its 2.5m rating.

I am not disputing any of that,but there is a tariff the BBC publishes for the various genres,which say for soap is 100k per hour,includes a built in margin of profit for the indie,possibly 20/25%. They do not make them with no profit. I agree they will not get anything from overseas sales etc,but the making of a programme could still be profitable.

You cannot say ITV have made no money from The Royle Family,Shetland,Cradle to the Grave etc.
