Oh? And there was me thinking it was because Celebrity Big Brother is Five's most watched programme by some distance and one of the most popular shows in January with 16-34s on any channel.
I forgot they were a non-profit and could afford to make shows purely for nostalgic reasons.

That says folks are buying into reality tv rather than talent contest. Early stages the good, bad and the ugly. Seeing singers for first time with back story. It's driven by a producer narrative. Live shows were about choosing a 'star' to go on to be successful in music industry. That premise is very dubious now and it certainly doesn't matter who wins. XF forum on here is dead after show finishes with hardly anyone caring about the winner.

One thing that has amused me in recent weeks on Facebook etc is the new trend of accusing CBB of being too confrontational.
You couldn't make it up, really. It's like ordering a steak and then complaining about the meat content.

Have they not seen the schedules? Mrs Brown's Boys starting at 10.30pm after a weak EastEnders. That makes it harder to be most watched.

I was referring more to BB than CBB, which at times last summer fell below one million and truly is one show that should have been cancelled when Channel 4 ended the contact. Yet we all know what happened, Richard Desmond, owner of the Daily Star, bought Channel 5 and as the Daily Star relied on BB stories throughout the summer, decided to buy the show and its celeb version. Yet interestingly enough when Des sold Channel 5 and BB failed to go back to being a huge hit like it was in the early days, the show was barely promoted again by Des's rag, which has probably realised BB is a dead dog and the readers have moved on. However, the winter celeb version is still good for over 2 million.

Longer odds then for the programme that you think WILL be Christmas Day's most watched.

Advantage: Weak competition in the second hour (the business end of the programme) in the shape of My Mother And Other Strangers and Humans (Didn't realise that was still on till I saw a trailer for it today.)

Disadvantage: Midsomer Murders is no pushover as competition.

XF will get it, not even close. It will be in the 7s.
TA final, I predict, low 6s/high 5s for the actual final and then around 4 for You're Hired.

Darn it. You're quite right. I hadn't noticed that little trick. I was perhaps fooled by the Thanksgiving game which they all attended in person so obviously had to record later in the week. So I guess they must do both shows on the Tuesday and then Mark adds the fillers for the Thursday game (changes to wild card positions etc.) later. You live and learn! (Mustn't shout it too loud though otherwise the 'BBC deceives' crowd will be off on one again!

Well they do for some Pixar films including Cars 2 showing on 27th. There's no exclusive relationship if that's what you imagined.
A simple guide to ratings, water cooler and lunch break talk. When I started my current job almost 19 years ago, it was the Free Deirdre era of CS, and this was a massive talking point. Now the soap only gets a the odd mention and its ratings drop of 10 million since 1998 proves this by my water cooler theory. Simarly where once the bulk of TV talk in the late nineties was dominated by what was on BBC One and ITV, now people talk about what they've seen on Sky, Netflix, Channel 5, etc, and two younger members of staff admit they hardly ever watch the two main channels.
The Bake Off format never works in America. I think it will be the last one Mary Berry works on for Love Productions.

I think they're underestimated actually, big-time, but again- who knows. The ratings could be bang-on. But simple extrapolation of 5100 households seems a crazy way of doing it.
Is it insane to think that recently BARB have manipulated figures to make the BBC look better, as a statement about reforms, the charter etc?
Another point- why don't BARB produce ITV figures excluding ads? People often argue that including +1 is unfair, so I think they should also consider commercial TV's biggest disadvantage. It will add 300k+ on to the big shows.

ITV don't give a monkeys about the ratings without ads. The ads are what makes them money.

But then if you did that the average ITV programme would come in at only around 42mins versus 57mins for the BBC. Another big advantage for ITV.
This could go on and on and on.
Or we could just accept that commercials are so fundamental to the success of programmes on non BBC channels that it would be utterly ludicrous to strip them out of the averages, not to mention unhelpful when making comparisons.
Also, nobody was asking such things when ITV were more competitive with the BBC on a regular basis. Now it's more difficult to achieve parity some want the goalposts moving. Well I'm afraid in the real world it doesn't work like that.
