I forgot about Now You See It. Probably quite a cheap show to make, so they might even have made another series of it.

Lots of new programmes on BBC One and ITV on the 7th and 8th, but I only actually want to watch one of them: Still Open All Hours.

What about the National Television Awards? Won't Midsomer have to take a week off for that as well?

I'm not sure I fancy Sugar Free Farm's chances at 9pm. Yes, for Tuesday standards it did fine earlier this year, but it was at 8pm against Holby, not 9pm against Silent Witness. That Martin Clunes show should be solid though.

From what I remember Now You See It can rate reasonably well in the right circumstances but awfully elsewhere. It must be dirt cheap so yes they might well have made more.

There's not a great deal that appeals to me either! Will probably give the first episodes of the talent shows a whirl out of curiosity but not expecting much from any of them.


Midsomer is only billed as a 4 part series, even though they made 6, so it seems the other 2 are being held back. With the first episode on this Sunday, that means the 4 part series will be done the week before the NTAs, with new shows slotting in afterwards. I think it'll be Little Big Shots at 8pm into something scripted at 9pm, but the Brits will mean both shows have to take a week off.

Agree about Sugar Free Farm. The ratings were only just OK this year and the competition is much tougher at 9pm. I'm surprised it has moved there and I think CBB will cause real problems for it. I can see it being down at about 2 million and axed.

The Voice doesn't really deserve the 8pm slot, that should be reserved for juggernauts/traditional shows and new launches- Dancex3 would have been worth trying there.

I'd have put MTP at 6pm and Magician at 6pm on Sundays with everything dropping back 30 minutes. Though starting Endeavour at 8:30 would have persuaded BBCme to move Sherlock to 8:30. Cat and mouse.

Score, Hassaan and you all think Dance³ will possibly flop, what would you consider to be a flop rating? 3m? 4m? 4.5m? ??

Well, considering what we've come to expect from the Sunday 6:30pm/7pm slot, even 3m wouldn't look so bad! But really, they should be aiming for better. Personally, I think below 3m would constitute a flop for Dance x3.

If it was to get 3.5-4m, that'd be decent for that slot I think but I don't see it, unfortunately.

Now You See It's ratings have tended to fluctuate a bit. As high as 5m (well, once!) and as low as 2m (but it's down to the scheduling).

I think the blind auditions of The Voice will settle at the 6-6.5m mark, after a 7m rating for the first episode (as a result of the curiosity). ITV will probably happily take that, though. As for Let it Shine, I think that might be around the 5m mark, maybe 6m. Pointless Celebrities might give it a leg-up but it's not doing as well as it was this time last year.


Ah, that makes sense. I'm not sure I'd put Little Big Shots at 8pm, as entertainment clearly doesn't seem to be working there. I suppose Big Star's Little Star is solid there, but Surprise Surprise was lower there than it was on Sundays against Strictly, and This Time Next Year has underwhelmed, for me personally.

I suppose it is a different situation as Dawn French isn't your typical ITV presenter and it is a bought-in format. They had success with their last bought-in light entertainment format (Ninja Warrior).

Quite a big story developing on Broadcast. Apparently Turner's Freeview channel TruTV is in big trouble - with an average audience of just 27,000 (0.3%) - so much so that they are looking for a buyer to rescue it.

I did make the point some time ago that Freeview is now overcrowded in some genres, and there are now far too many of these smaller channels in the upper echelons of the EPG playing very similar types of programme on loop, and it seems they are failing to co-exist successfully.

Still find it pretty extraordinary that things are so bad it may force a channel with such wide availability off the air, but clearly quantity is winning out over quality so perhaps no bad thing in the long run if there is some consolidation in the FTA sector?

Dance³ is very different to Stepping Out and really belongs in a prime slot on Saturday. I know they want it to be like DoI but it is a big family show and I expect those shows on Saturdays.

ITV should have been showing proper clips of Dance during IAC - explaining how big it is and how it's a hybrid of SCD, Lip Sync, Stars in Eyes and XF. If 3.5m is achieved and it gets positive AI then maybe they'll change the slot in 18.

As for Wednesday night, I'm with you, it doesn't suit certain formats. Little Big Shots, Surprise Surprise, TTNY, Roadshow, Countryfile, Celebrity Squares... they fit nicely in that earlier Sunday slot. LBS could work on Wednesdays, it is entertaining and Corrie is the perfect lead-in for it. Granny should love it just like she used to love Des O'Connor.

Well, on the bright side, AGT is its highest-rated show. Well deserved obviously!

To be fair to TruTV as my original post seems a bit too cutting in retrospect, it's made more effort than most I think in terms of the types of programme it has acquired. America's Got Talent was clearly quite a high-profile buy for such a small channel, and managed to punch through to some extent. RuPaul's Drag Race meanwhile was one of those that could have gone either way, unfortunately for them it didn't fire. And obviously when it started they had Conan, which, whilst never likely to rate given the success rate of US chat shows in this country, at least showed a degree of ambition to be more than just a cheap US crime doc on repeat type channel.

It's sad that of all the channels at that end of the EPG that could suffer this kind of a fate it has happened to TruTV. There are plenty of channels up there that put in even less effort and get away with it, or at least have owners with deep enough pockets to absorb any losses.

It's not been long since A&E entered this highly competitive space with the utterly dismal Blaze. With a weekly reach of just 790,000 or so currently, it's certainly one that falls firmly under the "why bother?" category.

There's more chance of Call The Midlife flopping than Let It Shine? As in CTM was more of a risk you mean? I'm confused. You can't count on one finger the number of light entertainment hits BBC1 have had in the last few years.

Below 3 million would obviously be an outright flop. 4 million would be decent, 3.5m would be OK. Low 3's would be just about acceptable but probably not enough for a renewal. I don't know how much it costs, the sets look quite big but they've filmed it all on the stage used for the international version and it's all pre-recorded which will lower the cost. For a renewal though I'd imagine it needs to look towards 4 million.

I mean there is more chance of CTM returning under 6m than Let It Shine not doing 5m+ and being a hit.

Like the Lloyd Webber series it will do well on BBC1. Its going to appeal to older viewers more than not, and with a lead in from PC its already garunteed a 4m+ audience.

Most of the recent LE on BBC1 has been aimed at a younger audience (The Getaway Car) or crap (Can't Touch This).

Let It Shine is not your traditionl TXF/TVUK/BGT talent show. Its so BBC through and through.

ITV will have known months in advance about scheduling for The Voice and all their other programmes. It's more a question of if the scheduling works.

Wednesdays seems a good shot for Benidorm or possibly Thursdays after Unforgotten although I suspect Thursdays will be Prime Suspect or The Loch.

There seems to be 10-12m people who watch both channels VOSDAL. What I mean by that is that MM + XF = 12m, MTP + SCD = 12m, Sunday dramas both got over 5m. Yes PE and XF got over 15m but that's probably where the size of the catch-ups kicked in.

So we can expect Countryfile to nail down 7m which leaves 3-5m for Dance³. Not being live should help it because you should be able to make it as good as it can be, rather like XF and Voice is when not live. Maybe SCD benefits from that too on Sundays.

LIS and TVUK should split that 12m too though they don't overlap much. With Ninja and Casualty I'd expect closer to 10m total audiences sadly.
