I hope it does come back, as beyond Family Guy dominating the channel's ratings there were lots of good programmes that don't have a natural home on other BBC channels.

Personally I think BBC4 doesn't have a proper reason to exist. None of its programming wouldn't look out of place on BBC2, even the documentaries (the sorts of stuff Arena or 40 Minutes did).
I guess Beeb took the easier option of closing Three because it had the bigger budget.
