Great rating for 24 Hours, highest of the series. |

I will just like to wish everyone on the ratings thread a Merry Christmas, The Brian Fox prpgramme on BBC Two may be worth watching on Christmas Day. If you get bored of predictable stuff on BBC One.

So RadioTimes have done a top 30 of 2016 for TV shows, with their top 5 being:
1. The Night Manager 2. Line of Duty 3. Happy Valley 4. Fleabag 5. War & Peace I thought it would be fun if we all did a top 5 on the ratings thread. My top five would be: 1. The Night Manager 2. Game of Thrones 3. Victoria 4. The Durrells 5. Happy Valley |

BBC The Night Manager (just brilliant) 4. BBC Happy Valley (love it) 5. BBC EastEnders (love the new character driven Eastenders. Both the show and the characters are allowed to breathe making it much more realistic. Well done Team EastEnders) |

Not sure if it's based on quality or simply enjoyment, but the top 5 shows I've enjoyed the most this year are:
1. Strictly Come Dancing (BBC1) 2. Great British Bake Off (BBC1) 3. Eggheads (BBC2) 4. Coronation Street (ITV) 5. First Dates/HIGNFY/Gogglebox (can't separate) (C4/BBC1/C4) Obviously I appreciate the dramas such as Happy Valley for their quality, but I'm not a massive drama fan myself. |

I don't think people will need to be told when The Lion King is on. If there are people out there who have had more airings of Let It Go than slices of turkey in December then they'll desperately seek out an alternative... or even switch the television off. I don't think plugging The Lion King will make much of a difference either way.
Sleeping Beauty is stuck in the middle of Boxing Day afternoon; it's not their star programme of the Christmas schedule. Saying that it may have a chance considering Brave isn't the biggest of films and it has a Prisoner of Azkaban lead out. Maybe 101 Dalmatians could be promoted slightly more but, again, it isn't the focal point. What they should really do is air a Disney trailer and promote all these films at once - call it Disney Season and see how far they get with it. Brave did 5.5m for its premiere last year but I suppose it won't be as big this time round. Normally these films don't need to be promoted that much - probably why ITV hope that people will find them themselves. I imagine they might be expecting good numbers from Captain Phillips and Amazing Spider-Man 2 (and of course The Lion King). Quote:
Which is a fair point except even in ITV's 'big' periods the BBC has generally dominated recently, especially this year. They've been mediocre at best except for the odd bright spot plus the old reliables Britain's Got Talent and I'm A Celebrity. ITV used to dominate the run up to Christmas even if the BBC took the season itself; it can't even manage that now.

I would agree with that. Christmas Eve has ended up like that because of panicking I think. In the provisionals Grantchester was down for Boxing Day and Blankety Blank for Christmas Day, but it looks like they worried about the opposition for both of them and moved them, which has led to an overstuffed Christmas Eve, a weaker Christmas Day and Boxing Day and a very random slot for the Spider-Man premiere (was originally going to be Christmas Eve teatime). A pity, they should have stuck to their guns.

Yes, it's done much better than the post-I'm a Celebrity dramas have done in the past few years.
Wonder if This Time Next Year did any better this week? It seems to have been recommissioned so hopefully it was back above 3m. Quote:

For ITV, The X Factor faded and they didn't have huge raters apart from I'm A Celebrity. ITV have done better this Autumn with drama like Cold Feet and Victoria. BBC1 were nothing special in Autumn this year, Poldark and The Missing slipped but were respectable. The other dramas couldn't get far past 5m. They had a good Autumn as Strictly delivered even more than last year, Planet Earth 2 was bigger than everybody expected and Bake Off went out on a high. |

Frozen is the biggest Christmas Day film they've put out in a while (possibly ever) - up until 2 years ago it was still huge. But I wonder if people might have become sick of it? Previous Christmas Day films did well when they were originally released but not too well so that it was still fresh in people's minds when it was premiered. I watched Toy Story 3 quite a few times and it still felt fresh on Christmas Day 2013.
Frozen was described as a young girls film, funny Brave wasn't last year? But the lead is a young female. I was ridiculed for saying I like Frozen, and although I said for Olaf the snowman, a poster decided to imply I would be dressing up on Christmas Day for it. Lion King of course was first shown in July last year on channel 4, those wanting to see it on TV would/ could have seen it then. |

I don't want to drag this up again, but with regards to the 6m rating for Walliams & Friend reported in the Radio Times, I did get in contact with them and although they didn't give a clear answer, they reckon they just included iPlayer.
Does anyone know why they aren't doing a book adaptation with him this year? |

Something to sink your teeth into. Christmas Eve overnights since 2006. I've got similar lists for Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year's Day as well.

Looking at these lists I think the question will be how do the BBC follow that. War and Peace and The Night Manager were one off epics and Happy Valley is slated for 2018/19. With Bake Off lost, PE3 five to ten years away, The Voice lost and no major sporting event in 2017 (the WAC will make its presence known but its not an Olympics or a Football tournament)-some audience share is going to be lost year on year.
