Thanks for the ratings Ray.

Six Wives has stayed consistent through it's run, that's up on last week and I think Lucy Worsley is becoming a more recognised name which is good.

Great rating for 24 Hours, highest of the series.

Do you mean the Brian Cox programme, The Entire Universe? Because that's on Boxing Day.

So RadioTimes have done a top 30 of 2016 for TV shows, with their top 5 being:

1. The Night Manager
2. Line of Duty
3. Happy Valley
4. Fleabag
5. War & Peace

I thought it would be fun if we all did a top 5 on the ratings thread. My top five would be:

1. The Night Manager
2. Game of Thrones
3. Victoria
4. The Durrells
5. Happy Valley

Pleased to see that do well, it was an enjoyable series that taught me a lot more to the story than I knew.

My top 5, nice idea to do this. I don't really watch anything on digital so sticking to terrestrial.

1 - Happy Valley
2 - Planet Earth 2
3 - The Night Manager
4 - Strictly Come Dancing
5 - Two Doors Down

Honourable mentions go to The Great British Bake Off, Cold Feet, The Durrells, Victoria, Line of Duty and the BBC 2 documentary on Hillsborough.

Mine would be:

1. BBC Strictly (wonderful series and great ratings)
2. BBC Planet Earth 2 (simply amazing cinematography and soundtrack)
3. BBC The Night Manager (just brilliant)
4. BBC Happy Valley (love it)
5. BBC EastEnders (love the new character driven Eastenders. Both the show and the characters are allowed to breathe making it much more realistic. Well done Team EastEnders)

Not sure if it's based on quality or simply enjoyment, but the top 5 shows I've enjoyed the most this year are:

1. Strictly Come Dancing (BBC1)
2. Great British Bake Off (BBC1)
3. Eggheads (BBC2)
4. Coronation Street (ITV)
5. First Dates/HIGNFY/Gogglebox (can't separate) (C4/BBC1/C4)

Obviously I appreciate the dramas such as Happy Valley for their quality, but I'm not a massive drama fan myself.

I had the same problem

I was thinking Marigold Hotel, can't wait for the Christmas specials and then the new series next year.

I don't think plugging The Lion King will make much of a difference either way.

Sleeping Beauty is stuck in the middle of Boxing Day afternoon; it's not their star programme of the Christmas schedule. Saying that it may have a chance considering Brave isn't the biggest of films and it has a Prisoner of Azkaban lead out.

Maybe 101 Dalmatians could be promoted slightly more but, again, it isn't the focal point. What they should really do is air a Disney trailer and promote all these films at once - call it Disney Season and see how far they get with it.”

Frozen is the biggest Christmas Day film they've put out in a while (possibly ever) - up until 2 years ago it was still huge. But I wonder if people might have become sick of it? Previous Christmas Day films did well when they were originally released but not too well so that it was still fresh in people's minds when it was premiered. I watched Toy Story 3 quite a few times and it still felt fresh on Christmas Day 2013.

Brave did 5.5m for its premiere last year but I suppose it won't be as big this time round. Normally these films don't need to be promoted that much - probably why ITV hope that people will find them themselves. I imagine they might be expecting good numbers from Captain Phillips and Amazing Spider-Man 2 (and of course The Lion King).

I'm personally not sure what they can do - The X Factor has struggled but in the face of stronger BBC1 competition, not so much. I think it has held up better than we thought. I'm a Celebrity had a strong series, but it could have been good if they had a stronger autumn. On the drama side I don't think it has been a bad year though.

I agree. For a three-part series it has done well.

BBC1 had an OK night. BBC Two had a decent night although it's a shame Insert Name Here didn't do better.

Strong ratings for The Dog Rescuers and Countdown to Christmas. World's Strongest Man didn't do too badly either.

Yes, although I think the Christmas Eve schedule is one of the strongest they've had (in terms of programming which should be able to get big ratings) for a while but it does seem a bit stacked and other nights have been compromised as a result.

No rating for it but I think it might have been below 3m. It's a shame it hasn't done any better but apart from Britain's Got Talent, entertainment tends to struggle in that Wednesday 8pm slot, I don't know what it is. Surprise Surprise was lower there than against Strictly. Maybe Sunday at 7pm would be better for TTNY next time round?

That's down to programming.

For ITV, The X Factor faded and they didn't have huge raters apart from I'm A Celebrity. ITV have done better this Autumn with drama like Cold Feet and Victoria. BBC1 were nothing special in Autumn this year, Poldark and The Missing slipped but were respectable. The other dramas couldn't get far past 5m. They had a good Autumn as Strictly delivered even more than last year, Planet Earth 2 was bigger than everybody expected and Bake Off went out on a high.

It's funny, I made exactly the same argument, in the same words on this thread a few weeks back re Frozen. Then it started off a very negative debate. Funny how posters react differently to who posts rather than what's posted.

Frozen was described as a young girls film, funny Brave wasn't last year? But the lead is a young female. I was ridiculed for saying I like Frozen, and although I said for Olaf the snowman, a poster decided to imply I would be dressing up on Christmas Day for it.

Lion King of course was first shown in July last year on channel 4, those wanting to see it on TV would/ could have seen it then.

I don't want to drag this up again, but with regards to the 6m rating for Walliams & Friend reported in the Radio Times, I did get in contact with them and although they didn't give a clear answer, they reckon they just included iPlayer.

Does anyone know why they aren't doing a book adaptation with him this year?

Looking at these lists I think the question will be how do the BBC follow that. War and Peace and The Night Manager were one off epics and Happy Valley is slated for 2018/19. With Bake Off lost, PE3 five to ten years away, The Voice lost and no major sporting event in 2017 (the WAC will make its presence known but its not an Olympics or a Football tournament)-some audience share is going to be lost year on year.

I thought it would be fun if we all did a top 5 on the ratings thread. My top five would be:

1. The Night Manager
2. Game of Thrones
3. Victoria
4. The Durrells
5. Happy Valley”

Despite the Radio Times list being so BBC related (feign suprise), those dramas in that list are most definately land-mark and were very good.

ITV = Must try harder.

Mine would be:

1) Planet Earth II
2) Marigold Hotel
3) The Durrells
4) Saturday Night Takeaway
5) Victoria

Hourable mentions: The Night Manager (despite still having not seen it and on record), Britain's Got Talent, I'm A Celeb, The Missing, National Treasure, Great Canal Journeys

Perhaps we could do one of those lists we did a couple of years ago: flops of the year, hit of the year, so glad it flopped etc.

Best to do that on the 30th or something, get the Christmas ratings out of the way first. Could be some almighty flops, or jaw dropping ratings to come.

Absolutely agree. Will be interesting to see what does well next year, and what doesn't.

As Lewis says, best to do that at the end of the year. Who knows what the next few days will bring.
