What will you be watching on Christmas Eve? For me I will be watching/recording:

101 Dalmations
Blankety Blank
Muppet Christmas Carol
We're Going on a Bear Hunt
Birds of a Feather
Grantchester
Vicar of Dibley
(record Lady In The Van & Coronation Street & The Yorkshire Vet)
Programmes over Xmas that I've got set to record..

Hobbit - Friday - ITV
Blankety - Eve - itv
Maigret - Day - itv
Witness for Prosecution - Boxing - BBC1

Xmas being on a weekend is awful for me because I've got 7 NFL games over the long weekend scheduled which equates to over 20 hours worth.

Ain't happening, sunbeam.

My top 5

1 Stranger Things - Just a show that is basically referencing everything I loved growing up in the 80s King novels, Spielberg films, Goonies etc.), with a bit of x-files thrown in, but somehow moulded into a brilliant original feeling story.

2 Planet Earth 2- Thought maybe we'd seen it all in nature progs, I was wrong, Attenborough = National Treasure, beyond all else.

3 The Walking Dead - Yes most people are snooty about it has odd little slumps and killing of some main people put a dampener on it, but it still makes me care about the characters and still shocks, courtesy of Negan and Lucille.

4 The Durrells - Certainly a contrast with the last choice, but in the end after a depressing year, there's nowt wrong with really well done feel-good stuff nicely plotted and really amiably played.

5. Westworld - Went through a bit of a lull mid-series I felt, or else it would be higher, but the final few twists and ending was electric, and it always felt something that looked very different to the norm, starting with the brilliant title sequence. incredible performances throughout the cast too.

All quite interesting rating-wise too I'd say.

Line of Duty was good, but honestly I felt the final episode was farcical, more out of some kinda histrionic 80s cop show shoot-em-up. Happy Valley was good too, could have made top 5.. night manager brilliantly acted, but you always had to buy the conceit that Hugh Laurie wouldn't suspect the recent interloper right away, which I never did. Braindead was decent, on and I love The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, the best comedy of the year, but that isn't really saying much.

Channel 5 currently repeating Chas & Dave's Xmas Knees-Up from 1982. I'm waiting for Jim Davidson to come on to see if he uses (and C5 lets through) amy off-colour material.

I think the programme may be cut. It's a 55 minute slot. Bet the original was 60 minutes. They've certainly put the commercial breaks in different places cosback then there would be two breaks in a 60 minute programme and today there are three.

edit: Unless I blinked and missed him, Jim Davidson didn't make the final cut. His name was in the end credits though.
Channel 5 have shown this programme I think four times now, and on each occasion Jim Davidson has been included in all the synopses and billings, and every single time he's been edited out. Clearly nobody compiling the billings has ever watched the actual programme. At least it wasn't on Christmas Day this year.

It seems 5 don't have the rights to the Thames shows they used to repeat every Christmas, which is a bit of a shame, they often showed some interesting things. Although I did end up seeing the 1981 Christmas Morecambe and Wise more often than most of their BBC ones.

I assume you've got the luxury of two weeks off work then?

I don't know about anyone else, but it isn't Christmas to me more than it was last week, and I know firmly what day it is. It's only next week when that applies. Therefore to me last night was just like any other Tuesday night when deciding what to watch on the TV.
You assume wrong, I'm afraid, Andy, I was working on Tuesday and I'll be working on various days across the fortnight. That's the kind of great guy I am. It's alright, I've got days off too.

But the point is that it clearly wasn't a normal Tuesday as there was no One Show, no Newsnight and only ITV were doing anything like a regular daytime service, so people would have noticed the schedules were different, and people are breaking up throughout the week - a load of my Facebook friends were finishing yesterday. And the general point is that Tuesday was in the Christmas TV guides, which people have.

Last year ITV had several original dramas over Christmas. This year they have a Maigret that they held back, a Midsomer they held back and a Grantchester special. They made an effort in places last year but it wasn't appealing.
Pretty sure all the original dramas they showed last year were held back rather than being expressly commissioned for Christmas. I don't see why ITV need to justify making minimal effort at a time when BBC1 are so traditionally strong. There are umpteen more important slots they can spend the money on. I'd rather see more new programming before 7pm and after 10pm throughout the year than see them waste a load of money on a season they always lose.

Thanks for the ratings Ray.

Six Wives has stayed consistent through it's run, that's up on last week and I think Lucy Worsley is becoming a more recognised name which is good.
Yes, and obviously it's cementing Lucy Worsley as a BBC1 face, which is all to the good. And it's history on primetime BBC1 and for all the talk of dumbing down, you didn't especially get that in the past. Indeed, given the hoopla over Planet Earth II it's worth remembering that Life On Earth was originally shown on BBC2.

Haassan (or someone else) do you know how Tipping Point is doing against Madagascar on BBC1? Thanks in advance
Up to Tuesday I was told that Tipping Point was ahead of the Christmas afternoon films. So people don't mind the same schedules even in Christmas week. Also keeping it on all year round and not taking a break, which Pointless was criticised for, is actually a sound strategy.

It's a funny old business television.
Yes, I had a look at these earlier this week (although I must point out my access to ratings will be extremely limited over Christmas). I can't remember the exact figures but it was something like 1.2m vs 800k. I thought it was interesting that we hear on here that daytime audiences are bored of the same shows and when it's the holidays - which for many people this week it is, on at least a few of the days - they should show something special, and then when they do the audience watches the same shows as usual.

Do you mean the Brian Cox programme, The Entire Universe? Because that's on Boxing Day.
He may have two programmes or that programme on Christmas Day on BBC Two is something different. I check the EPG.

Two of my five there (The Night Of and Camping). Interestingly, they were both available to watch 'box set' style ahead of the weekly linear showings.

How did you watch them? We watched them nightly.

Haven't started Divorce yet, still watching Girls from the Spring!!

Hate to say it but ITV have been incredibly lazy this year.

Other than Christmas Eve and Maigret on Christmas night, it's absolutely shocking. They've basically just stuck a film on every single night, most of which have been seen several times. Captain Phillips is about the only decent premiere among the bunch.

I know they have had other successes and a very packed January but there's really no excuse. I mean, on NYE they're not even doing a broadcast centred around the fireworks. It's just them and then straight to a repeat of The Chase. There's really nothing else to say other than they deserve low ratings for the amount of effort they've put in.

In contrast, the BBC has plenty to look forward to, although not as much as last year. Good to have Jonathan Creek and the Agatha Christie thing though.

ITV show the fireworks. They don't do a music special like BBC1. What would be the point. They'd be beaten 10/1.

ITV had a worse schedule last year that's for sure.

Don't know why they got rid of that in the first place! Liking the festive emojis.

I don't think it'll be Mrs Brown as that is on too late. I reckon any one of Frozen, Bake Off or Strictly. Whether any one of them will be over 7m remains to be seen.

Today, the 23rd of December, is a milestone. 10 years ago today, ronant started the Christmas Ratings Thread which has led to this current thread, and all 68 parts of it! So we can say happy birthday to the ratings thread today

http://forums.digitalspy.co.uk/showthread.php?t=503081

This made me laugh

Out of sequence but I thought you might like Thursday's too. EastEnders is quite low which they should worry about as it's building towards its major Christmas Day storyline.

Thursday Overnights
1 …. 9.0 (41.8%) …. EastEnders (19:30) BBC1
2 …. 7.7 (37.7%) …. Emmerdale (19:00) ITV

4 …. 6.3 (31.0%) …. BBC News; Regional News; Weather (22:00) BBC1
5 …. 5.9 (29.4%) …. Regional News Programmes (18:30) BBC1
6 …. 5.0 (26.1%) …. BBC News and Weather (18:00) BBC1
7 …. 4.6 (20.6%) …. The Bill (20:00) ITV
8 …. 4.4 (19.7%) …. The Worst Christmas of My Life (21:30) BBC1
9 …. 4.1 (20.5%) …. ITV Evening News; Weather (18:30) ITV
10 … 4.0 (19.6%) …. Super Vets (19:00) BBC1
11 …. 3.9 (17.1%) …. Strictly Confidential (21:00) ITV
12 …. 3.6 (16.6%) …. Holloway Hair-Do (19:30) ITV

15 …. 3.3 (43.1%) …. Regional News and Weather (13:30) BBC1
16 …. 3.1 (21.2%) …. The New Paul O'Grady Show (17:00) CH 4
17 …. 3.0 (18.4%) …. Neighbours (17:30) BBC1
18 …. 2.9 (19.3%) …. Weakest Link (17:15) BBC2

I think Emmerdale could be ahead of Doctor Who in the overnight ratings and Doctor Who ahead in consolidated ratings.

Doesn't emmerdale usually dip on Christmas Day? I imagine it'll be dented by the fact it's on a 5.45pm. Doctor who has a stronger lead in as well with the Christmas bake off

It does, but last year Stick Man was around 6.5m in the same slot and Doctor Who dropped over 1m from the lead in. Its average was boosted by its lead in and out.

I can't see Bake-Off any higher than 7m, and any older viewers I would think, will switch to Emmerdale.

Emmerdale has ranged from 4.2m to 7.2m on Christmas Day. Its ratings higher than last year, which got 5m I think. So I think 5.5m-6m should be possible.
