So kids playing, dad and grandad sleeping, all add to the rating.

Likewise a lot of homes will be empty as they'll be visiting others, so it will even out the figures.

I can see EastEnders being the most watched out of the two as it only just nudged it last year and remember it was up against the last ever Downton Abbey.

How do they know how many are watching? Is this all manually input by the viewer or is there some sort of sensor?

I do this on podcasts where I have things set at 1.2 and it works a treat. Never tried it for TV but it makes some sense. I do wonder how much people are really enjoying the programme though if they are ploughing through it.

What works for a EastEnders is that it's the first Christmas since 2011 that it has t faced Downton. What works against EastEnders is that the programme has been bland in the run up to Christmas. The major storylines have been Phil's ill health, an interminable teenage love plot, a Christmas play and bins. It doesn't look exciting from the trailer.

It's also up against Maigret which is the only thing on tomorrow that I'm recording*.

*Therein lies the problem for itv.

Margret isn't Downton that's what gives EastEnders a chance. But will the casual audience be interested in a poor EastEnders? We shall see.

Maigret - it has an older skewing following, but I can see that doing well with Iplayer ratings.

Channel 4 tonight seem to have got it right with "We're Going On A Bear Hunt" and the other Raymond Briggs animations plus "Muppet Christmas Carol".

BBC1 strikes me as lazy and older-skewing tonight. Bar EE and Michael McIntyre, who wants to watch Pointless Celebrities (I think if your fame is dead, you should be made to get a proper job or face prison), a cheap Peter Kay clipshow (boy is he fat and lazy) and Shirley Bassey (she hasn't had a hit in ages!).

Shirley Bassey isn't judged on, " not having a hit in ages" but like Sir Tom Jones, a music legend/ icon. Both have had TV series in the past, both dung bind movie themes, typically a sign of a very popular singer, both sold millions of records. She is 80 and perfect Saturday night entertainment.

Note Peter Kay isn't just an old clip show, there is new material in it, including a new Christmas segment of the popular Car Share filmed to coincide with the new series coming.

It's not the content, otherwise Songs of praise would be on at 7 pm not 11 am.

It's what viewers watch and want to watch.

The typical complaint is TV schedules are they are a bit samey Sherlock will beat any competition. CTM will do well, but will only marginally win.

But 90% of it is a repeat. It's a new documentary with Christmas slapped on it.

Every family member has a designated button on a keypad (with additional ones for guests programmable for correct demos).

Every time someone enters or leaves the room, they press their button.

Must be tedious and I expect there's a lot of forgetfulness.

Just imagine having a busy family Christmas and having to keep on pressing buttons!!!

The system's big failing is differentiating between passive and active viewing.

Sherlock needs to be watched intently. Hard to do if you're having a big family Christmas.

New Year's Day is far more suitable.

We won't watch anything tomorrow, but are recording Maigret for a quiet night.

Very much like the scheduling of Paul O'Grady's Fairytales last Tuesday, I can't help but feel the Dame Shirley Bassey tribute would be more suited to an earlier slot than 9pm. Michael McIntyre and EastEnders work well off the back of a Pointless lead in but the following show feels to me as though they'd scheduled everything else and just bundled whatever else they had left there.

If I was them I would have scheduled it for 7pm yesterday and placed Strictly Len Goodman on tonight in an earlier slot, say after Pointless.

For me, like Downton Abbey, Call the Midwife is too long and requires too much concentration for Christmas Day. Put it on any other holiday day and it would do better; Christmas Day should be about entertainment and light-heartedness, something easy for the family as a whole to sink their teeth into:

I'd personally have scheduled Call the Midwife from 19:00 on New Year's Day leading into Sherlock at 20:30. That combined with Mrs. Brown's Boys at 22:00 would make for a stunningly dominant line up.

To be fair I've got to watch everything on Christmas/Boxing Day twice, as the first time it's on it's just background noise really.

By evening on NYD it's all over, so Sherlock is perfect for then.

The problem with CTM, from my angle, is that it's mainly a woman's programme. Christmas Day programmes should appeal to all the family members. Or at least be something that all the family members would be willing to tolerate watching with everybody else on Christmas Day. EastEnders fits the bill for this which is why, in the past, it's had a Christmas Day boost. Mrs Brown's Boys also fits the bill despite the effing and blinding.

Haven't said that, CTM was one of only three BBC1 Christmas Day programmes to rate above 9m in the consolidated ratings last year, the others being Mrs Brown's Boys and Stick Man. I guess those consolidated figures would be BBC1's justification for continuing to give it a Christmas Day slot (even though I believe its overnights would be higher on Boxing Day.

My BBC1 schedule for Christmas Day, if I'd been in charge, would have been:

2.00 Top Of The Pops
3.00 The Queen
3.10 News
3.20 Frozen
4.55 Doctor Who
5.55 Bake Off
6.55 News
7.05 Strictly
8.20 Outnumbered
9.00 EastEnders
10.00 Mrs Brown

I personally do not think, Outnumbered, is strong enough for 8.20, maybe 10 pm, now Still open all hours us a strong comedy but only 30 minutes.

Strictly currently is in a goldilocks slot, against Paul OGrady and the News, I wouldn't move it off the hour at 7.05, it's going to pick up ITV viewers at 6.45, in particular when Paul is repeated quickly.
