It couldn't do any worse than what they usually put there (repeats of The Chase and Tipping Point excluded.)

I'll take seventh! Well done, Only_You! It would be nice to do more of these across the year, I think.

I think that figure will really be top end of what it'll get, if it's successful. Perhaps for a final?

Either way, it's one of the biggest risks they've ever taken.

They could find a way around it, with clever writing. Fans weren't happy Victor was killed off. Though i guess kind of fitting given the programme title and subject matter.

Maybe an 80 year old Victor wakes up from a bad dream were he was run over when he was younger. Then rants to Margret in bed about idiot drivers in their bloody Ford Focus death traps.

Interesting seeing how the Home Alone films have done for Channel 4 every year in the run-up to Christmas. Here are the official figures, including +1 - these are just for the showings in the run-up to Christmas. The Fantastic Beasts programme is showing plenty of trailers for new shows that match demographics with Harry Potter.

Not only is Potter delivering decent ratings, he is also promoting Ninja, Wrestling, Dance and Voice to the right sort of audience. Potter is a gift that just keeps on giving to itv.

The Still open all hours figure is not surprising, not withstanding the pilot, the last 3boxing day specials have been underwhelming ratings wise. It benefits from the countryfile/call the midwife sandwich (this year Sherlock). It is not appointment viewing but enjoyable enough for people to keep BBC1 on for half an hour. Similar to Wild at heart getting the dancing on ice sandwich guving it life support long after it stopped being decent.

As for ITV getting the horse racing rights, in this age of netflix, catch up tv and fragmented viewing, the only shows that are less likely to see a decrease are live sporting events. Its just a shame subsequent governments have kowtowed to Murdoch and most of its behind a paywall

Thanks for those Hassan! Home Alone never fails to deliver C4 an audience. I recall it even getting 3m on Channel 5 a few years ago, opposite Elf.

Also the premiere on ITV in 1994 had over 15 million, and that was shown in February!

There's also a couple of Home Alone screenings in Channel 5's top 100. It actually did even better on Five than it had done on Four at that point, thanks to better scheduling in the run up to Christmas:

WoS Wrestling is a pilot though it is going to struggle in that timeslot. The racing will do well for itv, the National will get them 8m+. The sport is hoping itv can breathe some life in to the sport, it's fair to say there is plenty of anger to C4.

As for your wider jokey point, wrestling and racing and even a new WoS show seems to be designed with itv4 in mind. Or itv Sports.

There's also a new series of Tracey Ullman's Show. Promoted to peak viewing?

There's that hospital comedy that came out of the Comedy Playhouse series (can't remember its name).

Porridge
Car Share (due for transmission in May according to Peter Kay)
Home From Home starring Johnnie Vegas (which came out of the New On Two pilots.)

Presumably we can "look forward to" {cough} a sixth series of Citizen Khan.
And will we get another series of Still Game?

Anything else anyone knows off?”

I think the pilot was called Hospital People.

There was supposed to be a third series of Count Arthur Strong in 2016, but it didn't appear, so maybe it'll crop up in 2017, unless it's been quietly abandoned.

Memo to all journalists - ever since we adopted the Gregorian Calendar 434 years ago, the year ends on December the thirty-first not December the twenty-first.

I believe Sports Review Of The Year, as it used to be called, sometimes went out in the middle of January meaning they could review the sporting year right up to December 31. A sports review prior in the middle of December is not as bad as a news review then because there isn't much sport going on between Christmas and New Year whereas you could easily have a massive news story during that period.

According to Wikipedia, recording of series 3 concluded in August. Do you think it might be moved back to BBC2? I think it was moved to BBC1 as a swap for Matt Lucas' Pompidou series which was commissioned by BBC1 but was so awful it was dumped onto BBC2. And something needed to move from BBC2 to BBC1 to balance the books for the two channels.

Of course the primary reason for the review of the year programmes are to fill the back half hour on the news channel so they only have to do 30 minute bulletins

I still can't believe we've gone from a major celebrity death once every few weeks to one every day. I dread to think who will be next.

I wonder what Five will do with Most Shocking Celebrity Moments tomorrow?

Generally a light-hearted countdown show but I think they do cover notable deaths as well. Will there be time to edit or will they just run as is?

There's a trail for Sunday's episode, but I wonder if that's more to do with ensuring as decent as possible a leg up for Sherlock than care and consideration for Still Open.”

I think it might have taken them by surprise just how badly SOAH held up last night. I knew Corrie would dent it but thought it could still do around 4m in that sandwich. I think it'll do better on Sunday as the sandwich will be stronger and Corrie is out of slot so some might not realise it's there.

It does feel like poor scheduling though and it's a weird fit between EastEnders and Sherlock. I'd have been tempted to hold it back a week, although the scheduling is odd then too. I can see it getting a bit lost at 8.30pm starting half an hour into Endeavour. Swapping it with Antiques Roadshow would make more sense. Unless the plan is to start Midwife at 7.30pm this year too to get the jump on ITV's 2 hour dramas, but that would surprise me as it would do more damage to the rest of the night than it would be worth.

They don't seem to have much regard for SOAH though. I suspect some within the BBC don't have much regard for it, much like with Mrs Brown's Boys, which never seems particularly carefully scheduled. It's odd really as its not like they've got an abundance of hit sitcoms

Re the poor ratings for Revolting Rhymes. Do you think they should have put Roald Dahl's name in the title? (Roald Dahl's Revolting Rhymes). I've always thought it was amiss of them not to and look what happened.”

I don't see the Potter specials doing much. Both are repeats and the 50 Greatest Moments one has been on loads of times and was already repeated about six weeks ago.

I don't think the primetime Potter's will actually do much, if at all, better than the daytime screenings (with lower audience shares). 3-3.5m seems about right (less for the 9pm starts on Thursday and New Year's Eve), but even that would be decent for what is total filler and would be a year on year improvement in those slots. Particularly as I imagine the demos are quite attractive (I remember seeing primetime Potters on c25% 16-34 skews in the past).

Thanks for these Haassan.

So last year on Boxing Day, for all new programming, with no soap in sight ITV was rewarded with an 8% share in primetime.

This year with the soaps and a new film premiere, ITV must have got 20%+ share in primetime and matching BBC1.

Looks too me like only one way forward for ITV, and perhaps BBC1.

I think last night was the BBC's worst Boxing Day since before 2007. I don't knoe why it did so badly with the animations and drama, because the schedule looked strong.

Evidently viewers aren't treating Christmas Eve or Boxing Day as special days anymore. People didn't expect to find Corrie on Saturday even though it was Christmas Eve yet on Boxing Day in its regular slot viewers flocked right back to it over Christmas specials on the other side.

I think this is a new side effect of the 'watch when you like' era. People are habitual and don't like to disrupt their schedules if they can afford not to, even if it is the holidays - it was still Saturday and Monday.

before I say this, I should say I don't watch a second of it, so not a fan,

Yet it really has been an incredible year for Strictly, winning Xmas on top of getting the best rating since 2011 in a declining telly audience quite brilliant. Certainly shows that the two female presenters don't hold it back, same could be said for Bake-off really. Still amazed when I glance in the SCD forums how many threads say one or both of them have to go, and then hint at PC for them being kept.

The fact is the proof is in the Ratings pudding.

Channel 4 opening with Celeb specials will kill new Bake off before it gets started imo- Outside the main series people aren't overly bothered about watching the current gen and it's the biggest show on TV normally. I think they'll be very lucky to get their money back imo

Other than that, what a lacklustre holiday few days for the ratings and quality of the TV offered. It really needs a shake up next year on all fronts if they want to recapture some big ratings.

The Real Marigold On Tour & Inside No 9 have been the best things I've watched this Christmas.
