Contrast this to Despicable Me which was now been shown a shameful FOURTEEN times since last Christmas, with a further screening scheduled over New Year. No wonder it failed to rate for the main channel on Christmas Eve.
And was on ITV2 again Boxing Day in prime time no less!

Let's not forget the premiere of DM2 was somewhat thrown away by ITV originally so perhaps goes some way to explaining why it still has legs. Superb film - Find myself watching it whenever it crops up intending only to do a few minutes but usually watch the whole thing.

From rzt:

Inc +1
Emmerdale: 6.00m (28.7%)
Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire: 3.82m (18.2%)

EastEnders: 6.08m (28.4%)
Holby City: 4.09m (19.6%)
The Witness For The Prosecution: 4.49m (20.8%)
EastEnders above Emmerdale, didn't see that coming. Well deserved at the moment in my opinion, I'm definitely a fan of the new producer's work.

Channel 5 (exc. +1):
Film: Dirty Dancing (R) (22:35-23:00): 1.29m (8.4%)
Film: Dirty Dancing (R) (21:00-22:29): 1.18m (5.8%)
World's Strongest Man: 0.77m (3.7%)
Dirty Dancing Delivers!

Question, anyone know why the radio times website isn't updating the 8 Jan? It now lists 8th and 9th as options on their table but there are no programmes listed. Weird.

It was billed as "NEW" in the TV Times but I think it has been on Spike - it looks very familiar!
If you had the far superior Radio Times you wouldn't have needed to ask.

According to Digiguide it started at the earlier time of 6:55, so wouldn't be included in the Broadcast top 3.
Hollyoaks started at 6.55pm. The app only includes programmes from 7pm.
Edit: Dancc explained it before me.
Ah right. That's odd as it always starts at 7pm normally. Thanks for clarifying.

I wish I could say the same (and I've been watching it since 1985).
And its ratings are terrible IMO.

Well it won its slot..............

I think the BBC and many of us, were expecting more than 3.3 and 3.5m for this. Especially when you consider Stick Man did 6.4m in overnights last year and 10m consolidated.

Its a shame, I enjoyed it.

It's certainly dividing opinion amongst EE fans and I can see both sides of the argument. However, I really love the community feel that it has, compare its Christmas Day where nearly all the cast were together to Corrie's where half the cast weren't shown, it makes it seem more real.

The ratings are terrible but it's been below Emmerdale recently so it's surprising to see it above.

Thanks for all the ratings as usual Ray

Not bad for the soaps. A really good rating for Harry Potter. As Dancc mentioned, it being at least a year since the last Harry Potter repeat run has probably done more good than harm. 3.8m on a Tuesday is a really good rating. You can see why ITV do it - it got a skew of 26% among 16-34s (so about 1m of them watching), which is really good, and puts them in a good position when it comes to promoting their programming for next year. Better promoting it to an audience of ~4m than 2m.

Witness for the Prosecution didn't do too badly but I think they might have expected more.

The good thing about ITV films doing well, is its giving them the perfect audience platform to promote their new shows in January that will skew young.

In other words, it better to ITV to show Harry Potter to 3.8m than it would be to show Coronation Street to 6m where its viewers are older. They need a mixture of viewers over Christmas to promote their new shows from The Halycon to The Voice UK

And I suspect Harry Potter would have been higher, were ITV2 not showing Skyfall.

That's OK.

This is how the two soaps rated on the equivalent Tuesday last year:

Emmerdale: 5.84m inc. +1
EastEnders: 6.93m (plus 409k on BBC3)

You would have thought they'd all have it on DVD though.

Christmas is basically over, time to make some space. 😂

I have films on DVD but sometimes will watch on TV. I get your logic though.
We don't take the Christmas Tree down until after Little Christmas.

Well the boost over 6m shouldn't be too suprising then. Given last year both soaps were over 1m apart, and last night less than 100k it definately puts into perspective how much EE is loosing its Christmas boost (despite getting a small uplift)

But then again, the entire BBC schedule is down YOY while ITV is up.

Isn't the Potter films' renewed success (apart from being very suited to Christmas more than any other time of the year...) likely to be down to, in part, the Fantastic Beasts film and all that has accompanied it? I mean it has been everywhere with so much hype and publicity that no doubt it rejuvinated peoples interest in the source material. Perfect timing really.
Yep and there's been the new play too. Potter has had a few years away and now he's nice and refreshed. Kids who fell in love with the books were born in the 90s so are now in that 18-34 bracket. Some of them now have kids who will be being introduced to the books.

Not only is itv getting good ratings for little cost, it's also getting cracking demographics that TV struggles to reach. This is a nice boo$t for itv and means they've saved a few pennies for 2017 as well as providing a great vehicle for the advertising of their new programmes.

Who has the rights to James Bond films? They are due a full run from Doctor No.

Re Ian's Q posed about Jonathan Creek, I'll go for a prediction of 5.3m.

Invaluable title to have around. They won't better that rating all week.

As for Harry Potter, shouldn't we address the elephant in the room here? These are the first ITV screenings for 18 months or so and it appears the break has done them the world of good from a ratings perspective

Contrast this to Despicable Me which was now been shown a shameful FOURTEEN times since last Christmas, with a further screening scheduled over New Year. No wonder it failed to rate for the main channel on Christmas Eve.
I think the break has definitely helped, although the Christmas screenings always did better than the Summer ones. 18 months isn't all that long between screenings on the main channel though, it just seems it because of ITV2's insistence on showing the same movies all year round.

ITV have definitely been justified in showing the Potter movies each night though. Lazy scheduling but it's paid off - 1 million 16-34s last night is a cracking result for them, particularly for such a cheap offering. It's much better than what they were getting last year and is running BBC1 close. It's a good platform to promote their January offerings to a slightly different audience too. Makes Thursday's scheduling all the more baffling though, I bet the Spider-Man premiere does worse than the Potter repeats have been doing. It's a very odd slot, they might as well have saved it for 2017 rather than shoehorning it into this week.

How are EE's ratings 'terrible'? Since the new producer took over they've been mostly flat or even up yoy.

I do not understand why that isn't seen as an audience of 7.4m for EE. It's really no different to a +1 showing.

EE has lost 1m viewers in a year then? It's gone from competing with Corrie to competing with Emmerdale. Casualty next year then. Hollyoaks in 2022.

Well that's ITV's Christmas Eve sorted for the next 2 years. Spectre next year should be good for 6-7m. Then in 2018, the premiere of The Force Awakens should give us blockbuster ratings, since it even outgrossed Skyfall here to become the biggest ever film.

I'm wondering where they'll put Jurassic World. That should do big numbers aswell. Boxing Day?

I'd rather have Xmas Day around the 6th January. Let NYD be the start of Holidays and people would return to work around the 10th - a few days closer to spring.

And of course it's far more likely to be a white Xmas in early January...

It might be lazy but it's also clever and successful. I didn't expect it to work and I'm not sure anyone on here predicted it would.
When you come up with an idea that nobody thinks will work and then it works really well, that is arguably not lazy but actually a stroke of genius.

Unless itv never expected it to work so well and just fell lucky.

Its not certain ITV will get The Force Awakens given its now a Disney. But I suspect they might try to get it. It would certainly pull in big numbers.

Spectre will be next year on Christmas Eve, although it would do well on Christmas Day or Boxing Day.

I think Jurassic World should be left to NYD. That woud launch ITV into NYD 2018 with a potentially 6-7m+ rating.

There will also be Minions for next year.

Thanks. Another case of me wondering where the dividing lines are between the 'itv family' of channels.

I foresee a Bond season soon on ITV Sunday prevenings.
