2.84m (14.8%) for To Walk Invisible.
I knew it would flop. Perhaps next Christmas ditch the period crap and put something lighter on?

I do like these sort of shows and with it being Adele it was always going to rate well. A nice figure for C5 over this festive period.
Yes I do too.

So far they've done: Ant & Dec, Adele, Peter Kay and Graham Norton - the first three rated over 2m.

What do you mean by diversify? Beowulf and Jekyll were good ideas poorly executed. They also have more original dramas on Encore, I still don't get that.

Agree with you about Taboo, I've now seen its Fox/FX trailers 273 times and I do like the look of it. As for the rating predictions...

EE - 6.1m
In the Snow - 4.2m
Brontės - 4.6m

Spidey - 2.3m
Emmerdale - 4.5m
Harry - 3.1m

Missed them all thanks to a most wonderful day of Dartsmas.

I mean expand into more varied drama - like the BBC is doing wih film like dramas in Taboo and The Night Manager.

Channel 5 (Top 3: 7pm-11.35pm) (exc. +1):
The Adele Story: 1.79m (8.9%)
Biggest Dog in the World: 0.99m (4.7%)
World's Strongest Man: 0.91m (4.4%)
Got these Story shows on a Link, enjoyed the Peter Kay one and saw a big of Adele last night and it was good.

ITV did better than I expected, Potter delivered again and Spidey did OK. That'll be repeated soon enough.

Not a good night for BBC1 again, 2.8m for To Walk Invisible is, what's the word people love to use on here?, oh yeah - dire. The use of Harry Potter is the story of this Xmas on TV and it has created a template for future Christmases.

[Thanks chaps for the ratings as usual]

It was a good drama, but had the hallmarks of other Sally Wainwright productions with over loud and intrusive music and mumbling dialogue.Would imagine it lost quiet a few viewers through the 2 hours.

Excellent night for BBC4 and in particular the Flying Scotsman. I've recorded it, in the hope of watching it this weekend.

Makes you wonder why Dark Heart premiered on the channel for encores. Houdini and Doyle too though I'm told it was so-so.

I think BBC One have essentially made the same mistake ITV did last year with drama. I don't think people want that sort of drama over Christmas.

It was commissioned for ITV Encore - so should land on that channel.

Though I think it would be a good idea for ITV to rpt Encore dramas in a 10pm Saturday slot: The Frankenstein Chronicles in preperation for the 2nd series too land next year.

It wouldn't really matter if it was under 1m because the 10pm slot on Saturday is hardly impoartat and it might get a few more interested in the series.

Perhaps. But it doesn't bomb on BBC1 like ITV, it just flops of underperforms.

Fantastic for the Adele story, surely very close to 2m with +1, it also boosted the things around it with the doc and Strongest Man most likely at 1m with +1

Excellent for Ch5. These Story docs have done well for them.
C5 holding 1.8m viewers for 1.5hours must be contender for rating if the Xmas period.

It was a poor rating for EE but it will get a higher rating tonight and a big one NYD. I expect 7m+ the trailer is very good and last year it jumped from 6.9m to 8.3m so I'm going to guess 7.2m for New Years Day. 2017 is going to be a much better year for the show I can feel it as the show is ensemble these days and feels much more of a community we also have new characters joining.

ITV Encore is not paid for by advertising but by Sky as an exclusive for its subscribers. In exchange it has to air a steadily rising number of exclusive original dramas. So its content is not going to be aired on the main channel and it is not puzzling that it isn't.

Thanks Ray.

Great rating for Charlie Brooker's 2016 Wipe, The Adele Story did very well for Channel 5, and a great rating for The Flying Scotsman on BBC4. Robot Wars hasn't registered at all for BBC2. Harry Potter did well again. Makes you think how poorly some of ITV's original programming in those slots of done and also how some BBC1 programmes opposite Potter have under performed.

2017 will be better because the show can't get much worse! We've not even heard about any new characters, just a dozen axings.

BBC2 (Top 3: 7pm-11.30pm):
Christmas University Challenge: 2.67m (12.3%)
Charlie Brooker's 2016 Wipe: 1.95m (9.2%)
Channel 5 (Top 3: 7pm-11.35pm) (exc. +1):
The Adele Story: 1.79m (8.9%)
BBC4 (Top 3: 7pm-12.25am):
Flying Scotsman from the Footplate: 0.94m (4.5%)
The audience on the look-out for something to watch at 9pm when the two main channels fall short.

The BBC don't help EastEnders by continuing scheduling University Challenge against it on BBC2, UC always eats up a substantial chunk of the viewers. I suppose BBC1 should be relieved that EE managed to out-rate an out-of slot Emmerdale.

Is ITV airing the final few films later to do with them being 12 in the age ratings compared to the earlier few not? Just a suggestion.
That wouldn't stop them, programmes with 12 ratings are broadcast pre watershed all the time; seven out of the twelve episodes of series 9 of Doctor Who are 12.

Dissapointing for EE I have a feeling that tonight will be higher.
I'm sure you say that everyday.

Then it probably needs a new identity which Lygo seems to accept.
It makes little sense to keep repeats off the main channel because by expanding the awareness of their dramas, you hopefully pull in new viewers to the channel.
It's the same debate that exists around The Grand Tour.

Sky do not solely fund Encore, they have an exclusive partnership arrangement with itv. That exclusive deal might be expiring soon.

I have a feeling EE will be similar to last night. Its Friday.

EE is now down over 1m YOY. Its going to have to pull it out the bag to reach 7m+ on NYD.
I agree. It is now down to its core audience like Doctor Who of circa 5-5.5 million and timeshifting an additional 1m

I think for NYD it will be in the 6m bracket

EastEnders faces an uphill battle winning hearts and minds, which hasn't been helped by an interim period of the new executive producer settling in and building on characterisation as opposed to plot.

For what it's worth, the momentum is definitely stepping up a gear. Last night's episode featuring the beginning of the climax of Lee Carter's depression storyline was very powerful. Depression amongst young men is definitely something EastEnders should be proud of covering. Tonight's episode looks similarly, if not more, powerful. Obviously it won't be seen by an optimum audience because it's a Friday and EastEnders just isn't hitting those peaks at the moment.

Still, it managed to be the most watched programme yesterday, even if by a modest margin.

Just a thought: I wonder if the same people who talk about viewers turning off EastEnders because it's apparently "so depressing and bleak" are the same people who claim no one has been watching EastEnders because it's been so "happy" and community-based, with few gripping plot developments (as on Christmas Day)?

Poor rating for Spider Man, but not unexpected. I think Emmerdale was lucky to get that, and is very close to EE despite the latter having some pretty easy competition.
I wouldn't describe a big film premiere as "pretty easy competition" Just because it flopped in the ratings.....

Thought Life In The Snow might have done a bit better now that Planet Earth II has sharpened appetite for natural history. But, of course, PE2 had a massive lead-in through Strictly whilst LITS had a weedy lead-in for EastEnders.

EastEnders, previously the centerpiece of BBC1's schedule is starting to become a liability. Do you think the BBC are concerned at how its ratings are struggling and how close it is becoming to being the number three soap on TV permanently? But with a producer playing up the down-to-earth, ordinary storylines? Yeah, that's working.. It would be great to think there's a secret, deliberate plot to run EastEnders into the ground so that they can axe it.

Pauses to contemplate this................................. (As Captain Mainwaring sometimes said to Corporal Jones In Dad's Army "I think you're getting into the realms of fantasy there.") (And as Basil Fawlty once said when Sybil pulled him away from his internal ponderings "Back to the land of dreams".)

I agree that the momentum is stepping up, last nights episode was good. It set up what looks to be a gripping storyline with Lee.

However, how do the viewers who have left know things are finally picking up? Anybody that switched off at the height of the bins storyline has no idea the show is on the up.

BBC One desperately needs to step up on the promotion. A trailer should have been released showing some of Lee's storyline, plus last nights cliffhanger. Things like that might just bring back some of those viewers that abandoned the show.
