I wouldn't describe a big film premiere as "pretty easy competition" Just because it flopped in the ratings.....
Thought Life In The Snow might have done a bit better now that Planet Earth II has sharpened appetite for natural history. But, of course, PE2 had a massive lead-in through Strictly whilst LITS had a weedy lead-in for EastEnders. EastEnders, previously the centerpiece of BBC1's schedule is starting to become a liability. Do you think the BBC are concerned at how its ratings are struggling and how close it is becoming to being the number three soap on TV permanently? But with a producer playing up the down-to-earth, ordinary storylines? Yeah, that's working. ![]() Pauses to contemplate this................................. (As Captain Mainwaring sometimes said to Corporal Jones In Dad's Army "I think you're getting into the realms of fantasy there.") (And as Basil Fawlty once said when Sybil pulled him away from his internal ponderings "Back to the land of dreams".) For what it's worth, I think the storylines are stepping up a gear. As I said before, last night's episode was very powerful. New Year's looks brilliant. Sean O'Connor may have steered the programme away from sensationalism but that's no bad thing: a year ago, many of the characters were 2 dimensional and unlikeable. Now you have well drawn, sympathetic characters. It's a shame soap audiences now seem to prefer crash bang wallop rather than slow burn storylines. |

I agree that the momentum is stepping up, last nights episode was good. It set up what looks to be a gripping storyline with Lee.
However, how do the viewers who have left know things are finally picking up? Anybody that switched off at the height of the bins storyline has no idea the show is on the up. BBC One desperately needs to step up on the promotion. A trailer should have been released showing some of Lee's storyline, plus last nights cliffhanger. Things like that might just bring back some of those viewers that abandoned the show. |

Let It Shine is LONG too! But it gets a very good headstart on the Voice. It won't be a surprise to see young and old demos diverging in the 7pm slot - but I shall be watching LIS. |

I think Enders will top 6m on New Years Day but definitely way behind last year.
They really should have built the stories up earlier - Max should have been back at the beginning of December with his revenge on Xmas Day rather than a month of Shakil, Bex and that bloody play! I love the show (out of loyalty and hope these days) but December simply wasn't strong enough to generate any interest or excitement. Ronnies departure is a missed opportunity too - could have had Fatboy being found out, Whites revenge loads of better storylines. Hopefully the bosses at the Beeb are looking at ways it can strengthen again in 2017 |

So they're gonna let The Voice stink out the 8pm slot. It's a long show too - shame. I wonder, if the show sees yet another YOY drop, whether ITV will shorten the shows/shift them about slightly.

If The Voice can reach 6m, I think it can be considered a success. It's had lots of promotion, the older audience are pleased to see Tom Jones back and there seems to be a positive feeling around it.
After seeing some disappoint with their entertainment offerings, ITV's hopes lie firmly with the The Voice. |

That wouldn't stop them, programmes with 12 ratings are broadcast pre watershed all the time; seven out of the twelve episodes of series 9 of Doctor Who are 12.

The Voice should launch well, especially with the return of Tom Jones. Who's presenting it? Fruit Keyhole should do well with a decent lead in. Apart from YBF, a strong lineup from ITV. Just shows how an extra show can strengthen the whole night (even if it's only on the face of it). |

The audience on the look-out for something to watch at 9pm when the two main channels fall short.
The BBC don't help EastEnders by continuing scheduling University Challenge against it on BBC2, UC always eats up a substantial chunk of the viewers. I suppose BBC1 should be relieved that EE managed to out-rate an out-of slot Emmerdale. You think that University Challenge's audience would be watching Eastenders if it wasn't otherwise occupied? Ooookay!

They're not 12, they're 12A, which is borderline for channels without PIN protection available. ITV clearly decided that discretion was the better part of valour in this case. They have not previously shown any of the last three films pre-watershed.

I agree. It is now down to its core audience like Doctor Who of circa 5-5.5 million and timeshifting an additional 1m
I think for NYD it will be in the 6m bracket It seems only a matter of time before we start seeing some overnights beginning with the number 4. |

Hell episode 1 of Jekyll and Hyde was far tougher than Potter. (Though ofcom did haul them over the coals for that). |

12a is a cinema only rating. I doubt there would be upheld complaints at ofcom if ITV broadcast the last 5 Potters pre watershed, given how familiar the material is, regardless it's a decision for them of course.
Hell episode 1 of Jekyll and Hyde was far tougher than Potter. (Though ofcom did haul them over the coals for that). I still think the J&H fuss was blown out of proportion as well. 6.30pm was maybe a touch early but it certainly wasn't post-watershed stuff. |

It would be higher than what ITV's other light entertainment singing show was getting, so yes I'd say 6m would be a good starting figure.
X Factor 2016 overnight ratings: Saturday 27th August: 6.80m (800,000 higher than your 6m number) Sunday 28th August: 6.26m (almost level YOY) Saturday 3rd September: 8.28m (up YOY) Sunday 4th September: 7.64m (up YOY) Saturday 10th September: 7.44m Sunday 11th September: 7.20m (almost level YOY) Saturday 17th September: 7.70m (up YOY) etc. etc. Launching with 6 million would put The Voice down a million from even this year's numbers, and you'd call it a success. Bit odd. |

Ninja Warrior at 7pm, proven to work there before, great stuff. Let It Shine is LONG too! But it gets a very good headstart on the Voice. It won't be a surprise to see young and old demos diverging in the 7pm slot - but I shall be watching LIS. The trailer for LIS is awful and has even managed to annoy 1D fans by suggesting that 1D did dance routines. That idea is very Louis Walsh and your mate Simon would call it 'dated', which it is. I'm confident LiS will start off very well but by week 4 it may be bleeding viewers. Taboo hopefully will do better than Dracula did. Being on FX rather than NBC should help a lot. Keyhole is over an hour long then... I give it a chance thanks to The Voice and Casualty. |
