While they were at it they should have put in a button where if the judge turns around and doesn't like the look of them they can press it and the chair keeps turning back away from them again.

Great ratings for Charlie Brooker and the Flying Scotsman.

So as predicted, the BBC is now starting to overlap Let It Shine and TVUK. I knew it would happen if ITV scheduled it at 8pm. Now if the latter is a success, it'll be the sitauation with TXF and SCD all over again.
And an 1hr of YBF?? With the BBc starting their night off early with Celeb Mastermind at 5.40pm, BBC1 will start soaking up the older viewers from news onwards. BTW, shocking that ITV have the Chase, Tipping Point then the turkey Rebound airing from 12:15AM NYD... Who they think will watch Rebound at 2AM in the morning when no one watched it in the daytime? |

ITV should replace YBF with Celebrity Chase or Tipping Point Stars and push YBF earlier.

The new Radio Times out today says that The Voice format has been tweaked by ITV.
More live shows than on the BBC (five this year) and a 'twist' that the judges will not get to see the act at all unless they press their buzzer to choose them. |

We knew about the "twist" but we didn't know about the extra live shows. ITV are either very stupid or very arrogant - reckon they can turn around the poor ratings that The Voice gets for its live shows. Looking at how X Factor's ratings perform across a series these days, I don't rate their chances.

While we're on the subject of The Voice, here's how the previous launches did:
2012 - 8.43m (37.6%), * peak: 9.82m (43.4%) 2013 - 6.24m (26.9%), * peak: 8.15m (35.1%) 2014 - 8.37m (34.8%), * peak: 10.57m (42.6%) 2015 - 8.05m (35.9%), * peak: 9.2m (40.0%) 2016 - 7.12m (32.0%), * peak: 8.8m (38.3%) |

Apparently - or so Radio Times says anyhow - the extra live shows have been added so as to let the viewers get to know the contestants better.
If you have too few LIVE shows, viewers don't care for the singers and therefore about the final. |

I guess that makes sense. The Voice was one of those things that most people didn't really care who actually won. I guess it's more important to ITV that the winner goes on to bigger things, whereas the BBC didn't really care.

You say that, but it's accepted that Voice USA winners haven't gone on to great success, but the format has been considered successful.

Surprised at how well ED held up yesterday as well. Reminds me of when ED started halfway through Bake Off after Corrie Live and everyone said it would be a disaster but it held up remarkably well then as well. There's definite viewer loyalty there.
Potter continuing to do well even in a poor slot. No way it should be starting at 9pm. Spider-Man 2 is a poor film so no surprise it did poorly. |

Having more live shows makes a lot of sense. Maybe they've got a new wrinkle for that stage of the format. ... I saw some of Sell or Swap programme - did people take the cash every time? Pretty basic flaw in the concept and there was no reason for the viewer to care. They'd be better off having only a swap option and then viewers get to agree or more likely disagree with their choice of swap. |

I think the Christmas ratings have turned out differently than what anyone predicted. Everyone expected Harry Potter to rate poorly and for there to be a negative backlash.
Instead people seem to be enjoying the series, seem to treat it as a festive treat rather than a cheap slot filler, and not just doing well it is coming close if not beating the BBC. BBC One will also be scratching their heads at why their festive specials have under performed so much this year, almost everything has rated lower than if they were held last week or next week. |

As for BBC One's festive specials underperforming, I think it's more to do with a shift in overall viewing more than anything, although poor scheduling in parts has also harmed it. Jonathan & Creek and Outnumbered were at least in line with the last series they both aired. |

The Potter films have clearly been a welcome treat for viewers.
However, do ITV take the risk of running them again next year and overexposing the brand or will they (more sensibly) give them next Christmas off? I'm not sure which franchise could cover this week next year though. There's Star Wars, which is still a very popular and current brand. All the Star Wars films could lead up to the premiere of The Force Awakens on NYD. |

I agree. There are quite a few people criticising ITV for lazy scheduling but does it really matter?
I wouldn't show Harry Potter every night, night after night again next year, I think that would be a bit too much. The daytime ones will definitely appear again though. |

I agree. There are quite a few people criticising ITV for lazy scheduling but does it really matter? They've done well enough and they've attracted the type of audience which they very much desire, plus they've been able to promote new programming to a 3-4m audience rather than 1-2m.

Jonathan & Creek and Outnumbered were at least in line with the last series they both aired. ITV though is entirely justified in scheduling Potter like this, however weird it looks to me from past perspective. Its simply their offering amongst scores of others, and no-one can justifiably say there is a lack of choice-because there is limitless choice these days-including obviously ITV's own other channels. |

That has been a lot milder than I expected though which shows that some people are treating them as a treat. ITV get more stick on DS if they air an extra episode of Coronation Street.
