Similarly, is it ever taken into account when I watch a show live, but via the ITV hub of the BBC iPlayer?”

your viewing is only used if you are part of the BARB viewing panel. The validity of which has been discussed ad nauseam before, but as it's the only data we get we have to use it!

Assuming you are on the panel:

Your delayed viewing would count in the "overnight" figures, as they include watching up to 2am the following morning.

Your iPlayer viewing would be taken into account by the normal BARB numbers if you watched via your TV, or by their "project Dovetail" if you watched via a laptop/mobile/etc.

EE will regret the decision to kill them both off in years to come. We've seen before that EE relies on characters returning, so why kill two important characters off? It had no shock factor because the story got leaked. The moment it got correctly leaked scene by scene, their ending should have been changed.”

The leak was only a couple of months ago though so a bit late in the day to change everything.

Great for Sherlock and MBB.

Disappointing for EE. The BBC need to get rid of SOC before he creates further damage.

Disappointing for EastEnders for what was a big and bold episode in a prime slot. A lot of viewers have been lost over the last few months and it's clear they're not returning soon.

Pleased for Sherlock.

Is there any data on how people watch catch up tv? I mean the number who watch it on a computer/lap top vs the number who now watch on a tv via smart tv or games console? I had a google but couldn't find anything.

There is a potential audience there that ITV is not serving. A big film on NYD could do a solid 5m+. I'm pretty certain Spectre of Jurassic World would mop up many viewers on NYD.

Awful for Eastenders

I'm pretty sure the wedding was only filmed in October, and the leak happened from the same time, probably from somebody on set. They filmed alternative exits as well, which could have been used.

Maybe everybody knowing the outcome of EE stopped casual viewers tuning in?

The problem for EastEnders is that the amount of characters that have been on the show longer than ~5 years is dropping rapidly, and it's been the case for years. I watched a few minutes on Friday and couldn't recognise most of the faces.

Compare that to Corrie where quite a lot of the Street have been around for more than a decade. It has the longevity factor.

I guess ITV didn't want to waste something too expensive against Sherlock, which was always going to take most of the ABC1 and 16-34 viewers yesterday. Hence they scheduled a Morecambe and Wise related show, which would have skewed very old.

I disagree about getting rid of Sean O'Connor. You can clearly see he's been spending the autumn rebuilding the show with a renewed emphasis on characterisation and this has laid the ground well for dramatic material as we have been seeing throughout the last week. To get rid of him now would mean a protracted period in limbo probably with someone like series producer Sharon Batten in charge while the BBC looks for a new EP - and she was one of the triumverate under Dominic Treadwell-Collins who went all out sensationalist and farcical with the programme.

Wonder if EE will have been affected by a 7pm start? I tuned in at 7.30 halfway through and had to go back and catch up and so watched on delay. Breakdowns may indicate 7.30-8.00 was closer to the 7m expected.

Good night for BBC2 there with a cracking rating for Dads Army, comfortably ahead of ITV.

Dragons Den was lower than the Summer run, but I'm not surprised as they didn't seem to promote it at all and even ran a trailer for Sherlock (which clashed with it) straight before it, as if it say "don't watch this, turn over and watch that instead" which I thought was a bit off.

They always seem to plug the Summer series quite heavily but never bother with the second half of the episodes in the Winter. It seems to have landed in the January 8pm slot this time to cover for Top Gear failing to deliver a series for the slot for the second year in a row, so you'd think they'd promote it to try and get the numbers as high as possible in a slot they're used to very high numbers in.

Awful for EastEnders, beaten by a run of the mill Corrie on its much hyped massive day. Sherlock did well, and M&W didn't disgrace itself.

BBC One had a solid night, but there are problems looming. EastEnders is unfortunately dropping like a lead balloon, SOAH is underperforming, Sherlock rated well but this is probably the last series and Mrs Brown's Boys is gradually running out of steam.

Mrs Brown is actually up on the NYD episode of 2015, last year overnighting at 5.58

So they killed off Ronnie & Roxy in the hope EE would rate well on NYD, and they could forget the low ratings of the year so far?

That's the probem with EE. They focus on these big episodes on NYD to launch EE into the New Year, only this time its not worked. So they've killed off two big characters not even for a big rating.

Very low, not good. Maybe it will rise when people realise it's on.

It was on too early. They made same mistake with Pat's death at 7pm on NYD at same time. Breakdowns would be interesting.

Everything has been down on BBC One over the past week or so, but this is probably the biggest upset. I was expecting a hefty drop but not below 6m.

It's a poor rating no doubt. I still think SOC came in with the right approach of getting the characters (and the show) back to their grass roots before putting his own stamp on things, but while ratings seemed to hold up at first, they've fallen off a cliff over the past week or so.

I'm sure the show can win some of the impatient viewers back now it's doing drama again but I was expecting last night to be the start of this.
