As always with thanks to rzt

EastEnders... 5.98 - 26.1%
Still open all hours... 4.33 - 18.3%
Sherlock... 8.08 - 33.8%
Mrs browns boys... 6.72 - 33.5%

ITV
including +1

Diversity ... 1.84 - 8.0%
Corrie... 6.15 - 26.0%
Morecambe and wise...2.48 - 10.5%
Considering the depth it plumbed in episode 1 I think there will almost be a slight sigh of relief at the BBC that SOAH has managed 4 million plus against Coronation Street. It will be interesting to see how the rest of the series fares now.

Sherlock may have its issues and be nearing its end, but its great to see an 8 million overnight -I think that's the first over the holiday period-and it should push onto being the first 10 million rating of 2017 I would have thought.

Posters have commented again and again about Eastenders and its endless woes. Not seen it but by reaction it seems like a good episode for a landmark moment, but in what is by BBC standards one of the prime nights of the year it hasn't carried any casual live viewing and its not good that it hasn't even breached 6 million, let alone 7. I think 2017 will see more woe for all soaps, but Emmerdale has teeth now and Coronation Street has a clear loyalty cushion over the other two. EE will presumably have ED biting it on the bum again, and goes into 2017 with the most to fear imo.

Stronger episode of MBB and that's a good looking rating, but there hasn't been much story at all, its just been Brendan making comic use of walk on one- liners from the cast - with a cautionary note at the end. Without a series to advance the family story, its just too much like going through the motions.

It shouldn't be forgotten that it was a dire night for ITV yet again on NYD, but with no Sherlock next year, EE on the slide and quite possibly a lack of a suitable film, there just might start to be a shift in dominance at the start of the year.

Well when tonight's EastEnders pulls in its best rating since last January, what will we all say then?

Do people really think those who watch University Challenge would even consider watching EastEnders!?

That's exactly what it should be doing though. "Since last January" still means "less than last January".

How did Monster University do? Its a great film, and only had another rpt of ET on ITV. Hopefully it was over 3m at least.

My point is that just because the New Year Day episode rated badly doesn't mean that it's the end. If anything, the ratings for 2016 may have been lower than usual but the past few months they have been pretty stable.

What an awful rating for EastEnders. The episode last night deserved better.

"Being stable" at 5.5 million though is not good news, I'd be surprised if BBC were happy with its performance.

Thank you - do you happen to have the data for the year before? I am interested to see if the proportion catching up using a TV set vs a computer has increased/decreased/stayed the same.

I assumed that the number using a TV would have increased with the advancement of smart TV and games consoles to watch BBCiplayer etc on. I did read a report on BARB but it wasn't totally clear.

Unless you're one of the 5000 households in the BARB panel then you won't be taken into account at all!
so is it all guess work what everyone else is watching as 5000 is a very small number

I suspect they are wondering what they did wrong. Last year EE managed 7.3m and 8.3m despite the lower Christmas ep.

This year just under 6m. How can it have declined that much to loose nearly 2.5m casual viewers?

I think the BBC will be more concerned thats is dropping below Emmerdale regularly now.

Next year New Year's Day is a Monday so expect ITV to go with:

7.00 Emmerdale
7.30 Corrie
8.00 You've Been Framed!
8.30 Corrie

which is what they did last year when NYD was a Friday but with Gino's Italian Escapes instead of YBF!

Wouldn't be surprised if BBC1's NYD next year is the same as tonight's schedule with the new series of Silent Witness launching at 9pm. Maybe they'd have a film premier between 6pm and 7.30pm so that The One Show production team don't have to work on NYD.

And if BBC1 launch the new series of SW on NYD maybe ITV will launch whatever they have lined up for Mondays 9pm next January at the same time. Last year on Friday NYD ITV had The Big Soap Quiz at 9pm.

I think they have to give it time now with SOCs vision. Hopefully there will be some new characters who can get new interest.

I think what it lacks at the minute is a villain. Wheres the Pat Phelan? Wheres the Robron? Who are the new Max/Tanya family?

Its not going to get one-off massive increases i dont think any soap now does really. It just needs to maintain the quality throughout the whole year, not just these few weeks between Xmas and Year and then hopefully word of mouth will improve. Needs to set up a very strong summer to stop the drop there.

Pretty poor for EastEnders. It's normally much higher than that on New Year's Day. Quite surprised to see Coronation Street beat it too considering the island of flops it was surrounded by. Monsters University wasn't a huge rater for BBC One, I expected it to be a bit higher but that's solid enough. A bit of an improvement for Still Open All Hours. Solid for Sherlock and Mrs Brown which was up comfortably on last year's New Years Day rating (as it should have been). I do think it could benefit from a new series at this point though.

The Diversity show flopped as I thought it would. Diversity might have been popular enough to win Britain's Got Talent, and to be fair the '10 Years of BGT' montage that Ashley Banjo put together on the BGT Final went down well enough, but there's not enough appetite for a stand-alone dance show. Not that I think Dance x3 will be much higher! As I thought the Morecambe & Wise show flopped as well.

BBC Two had a solid night. Not bad for Channel 4 & 5 as well.

SOAH makes a gain on Boxing Day with the same lead-in and same competition. It's doing okay for a 21st century sitcom, especially one up against Corrie, but it's such a weedy programme in quality of comedy compared to its parent programme and that's starting to become reflected in the ratings. BBC1 may regret the way they've scheduled Sunday night next week with Endeavour getting a hour-long head-start on Sherlock and a half-hour head-start on Sherlock's lead-in, Still Open All Hours. EDIT: Sherlock's mismatched lead-in. Don't wish to generalize but can't help feeling these two appeal to two entirely different audiences with NOBODY who watches one watching the other.
If that's really the case, I wonder why it has taken three series for people to discover that? Mind you, the first two episodes last year struggled a bit too compared to what it was managing in the Countryfile/Antiques Roadshow/Call the Midwife sandwich, but they were up against Peter & Wendy and Jekyll & Hyde, not Corrie.

Using tried & tested statistical analysis, it's an accurate cross section of the viewing public, remember too that it's 5000 households with individual members registering their viewing..

And any inaccuracies would be likely to be present across ALL programmes.

Very strange breakdown for BBC1 why did the viewers fall from 7.30pm to 7.45pm.

Looking at the breakdown figures and the big drop for EastEnders in the last quarter hour, it would appear that the reason it was below 6m was because it finished at five to eight. So the tape checked figure will probably be just above 6m.

Looking at the breakdown. If Sherlock had succeeded EE (I know that would have been 2.5 hours of drama in one go but ITV do it) surely it's combined figure would have been higher as it would have benefited from an increase in anticipation of Sherlock. It finished early too didn't it?

Thanks for that list Hassan.

First installmant of Racing on ITV. Presumably its better than it would have been on C4, but Racing is not a big audience puller. We could see the biggest Grand National figures for quite some time this year, but there is not much else like that in the Racing calendar. The Derby, Royal Ascot etc have prestige tradition and meaning, but it will be interesting to see how figures in general compare to normal daytime programming on the main channel. The day to day meets on ITV4 might struggle to register much at all.

Is the 5.9m figure not tape checked then? I remember someone posting that ratings over Christmas generally aren't but I wasn't sure if that includes NYD.

I know there were trailers for eastenders but was the time of the episode included the bbc are good at that, I dont remeember the time in the trailer.

Its a disappointing it was a very good episode and it didnt get the usual boost.

So many characters have been killed off or left in the last 6+ months with no new characters coming in, with more still to go !

Looking at the figures above, EE has not been tape checked.
