If BBC1 are going to persist with those bloody awful idents, they need to add to their quota p d q. If they're suppose to represent diversity then a group of singers and an exercise class doesn't really cut the mustard.

Gold has just shown We're Doomed: The Dad's Army Story, the comedy-drama about the creation of the popular script. There was a disagreement between the writers and Paul Fox, the controller of BBC1 at the time, over the contents of the opening titles. "Nobody watches the programme for the titles" observes one person. Quite right. And nobody watches BBC1 for the idents. So just bring back the bloody globe and quit with all this oneness rubbish.

Sorry, that's what I meant. The figures provided are all correct though.

The amount of heat generated on this subject in these forums would tend to suggest otherwise! There's at least one contributor to the Broadcasting forum who seems to watch nothing else on the Beeb!

Going back a few pages now but a very mediocre start for ITV Racing it has to be said (676,000).

By comparison the same fixture on C4 has averaged 601k and 558k in the past couple of years, so not much of an increase considering all the fanfare there was around ITV taking over.

I can't see that meeting being on ITV's main channel next year, and there might be others that need to move across to ITV4 if those kind of figures continue.

As I understand it the next slated main channel broadcast isn't till mid March. A few of the papers that I have seen have been positive about ITV's start but as you say its not a startling debut from an audience point of view.

Is it me or does Horse Racing have a default audience when it is not The National, Ascot or Cheltenham: Gold Cup?

Were we already aware of this? https://twitter.com/BritishBakeOff/s...15129779306496

Love Productions actively wanting applicants for the new series of Bake Off. Deadline Sunday 8th January 2017.

The biggest thing for me is this: https://love.take-part.co.uk/gbbo/info/rules

Quote:
“7. In addition to the Programme filming days, you must also be able to commit to the filming days for The Great British Bake Off: An Extra Slice (working title).

18. The Deadline for applications is 23.59 on Sunday 8th January 2017 (or such other date as Love Productions may determine). If you have not heard from a member of the Love Productions team by phone or email by Friday 17th March 2017, then unfortunately your application has been unsuccessful this time.”

The 17th March date implies to me that they're looking to film it at the same time as previous years.

To be honest, I wouldn't be at all surprised if Channel 4 air it at the earliest possible time - which would be Wednesday 3rd January 2018.

No doubt better demographics than a repeat of Murder She Wrote though

Plus ITV4 will get a boost across the year, and ITV will get a boost for the biggest meetings.

Absolutely, some viewers are worth more than others. Sport pulls in men of different ages and they tend to watch live too. The Cheltenham meeting will do nice business for itv, the sport will be a nice fillip for itv4.

I hope the darts touches 1m tonight, it was cracking. That's another sport itv4 are pushing hard and the BBC have jumped on board too. C4 has BDO darts.

According to someone who worked the show, World of Sport Wrestling on ITV....

- got less than half what ITV projected
- was originally penned in for Christmas Eve
- likely won't get a full commission

Source: /r/SquaredCircle on Reddit (1 + 2)

The poster over there looks valid, but looks like this revival could be dead in the water after just one show.

If it was indeed originally penned for Christmas Eve, I wonder where it would have gone. Wasn't Blankety Blank moved to Christmas Eve at the last minute?

Well what is stupid place to schedule it then. NYE, when most viewers are out. Given what you've said, I expect ITV are surpised at how low Take Me Out & NWUK did as well.

Most of us could have predicted it a mile off.

Even in the early provisionals there was no sign of WOSW on Christmas Eve. It was originally The Amazing Spider-Man 2 on Christmas Eve at 6pm until that moved to Thursday with Blankety Blank moved across to replace it.

I expect had they aired it on Christmas Eve it would have been at about 4pm (the provisionals originally had it down for 4pm on NYE) instead of 101 Dalmations.

Not sure why it was moved to NYE. I think it was likely to flop wherever it went but NYE certainly exacerbated the problem. They clearly didn't want it stinking out Christmas Eve. I'm surprised they were expecting that much from it on NYE though. I bet they were a bit shocked when they saw the numbers. Plus if they were expecting that from WOSW I imagine they were horrified at the numbers for Ninja Warrior and Take Me Out!

Having seen the massive rating for we're going on a bear hunt, it's going to be interesting to see how this rates. I wouldn't be surprised if the first ep matches or even beats bear hunt given the huge publicity it'll have in the papers and on tv

Well CBB starts tomorrow. It's Ex HMs vs New HMs

There's lots of rumoured lists that are different so unsure which is real but it isn't that great but one list has barely any reality show ones which is a plus. It ain't a good lineup (most of them), but surprisingly a good sign up as apparently James Cosmo is in (Game of Thrones).

It'll launch low. 2.1m

I meant a link to the new TV, mate. Not that I have any way of justifying it to err indoors. Women can be so sensible.
Currys, Argos and the rest should give a free pair of ladies' shoes with each flash gadget. That'd help.

Back OT - both Silent Witness and The Halcyon seem to have impressed viewers tonight. 6.9m and 4.2m seems a reasonable guess.

I doubt it'll be lower than CBB's summer launch

As much as I think CBB is a pile of s***, I find it escapism TV and just a bit of a guilty pleasure.

I find it hard to believe itv were expecting close to 3m for wrestling. Maigret got 3m. Blankety Blank got a little over 3m and itv are supposed to be pleased with that and giving it a series.

Tipping Stars only gets 2 and a bit million and that has a fanbase. Seems a bit odd. I'd stick it on at 1pm when 1m is a good rating. It'll have a hardcore audience but little more.

I would say you are a bit too high for SW and bit low for Halycon. Though it'll be a walkover the BBC drama, simily because its a known drama.

Silent Witness - 6.3m

The Halycon 5.1m inc+1.

They are up against it if they are going to rebuild the sport's popularity to what I would consider a respectable level and certainly under 700,000 on ITV is anything but that. Grand National day sees this most extraordinary spike, and then for the remaining 364 days of the year most of the general populace couldn't care less about racing. Nobody is expecting football sized audiences, and we do have to be realistic about the age we live in now of internet streaming and so on whereby anyone who has placed a bet can watch the race on their phone or PC, but there's no doubt they could and should be reaching a lot more viewers than they are at the moment.

In ITV's defense, the new team was always going to need time to bed in, and the programme can only improve from here. As bad as first impressions were, it was never going to work immediately. Although Chapman was perhaps worse than expected, and I still think Oli Bell should have been given a bigger role, i.e. on the main programme as opposed to the morning magazine show, but perhaps that'll come in time if he impresses.

It's not entirely up to ITV to make this work of course, and racing itself needs to have a long hard think about how the sport's image could be improved to make the most of the additional investment in the TV coverage.

Tipping Point is cheap to produce, WOS Wrestling likely wasn't cheap so a full series is very unlikely.

Lower than even UK v USA in summer 2015?

I'd be surprised if it did quite as badly as that. Sure, there's plenty of reasons I can't be bothered to list to think it won't do all that well, and we can certainly rule 3m out with upmost confidence, but 2.5m or thereabouts seems a more plausible outcome. To be lower than the summer would be an absolute disaster really.

The only positive I can find is they've picked the perfect night to launch once again. Mostly older skewing competition, and the second hour is against one of Channel 4's lowest rated peak time programmes ever in the shape of This Is Us. So it has a fair chance of standing out on the EPG to the 16-34s.

Still, when you're relying on a lack of competition to bail you out effectively and keep things respectable, that's not a healthy place to be. It simply has to be a brilliant series this time around - it cannot afford another series like August, otherwise the fat lady will be clearing her throat if she wasn't already and Five will have to explore other options with that big chunk of their programme budget.
