The last summer CBB was tragic but the winter series and civilian were great. Such a shame that summer CBB was the last memory of Big Brother. Disgusting series.

Tipping Point, The Chase and Pointless all benefited from starting later last night. The Chase also benefited from having Tipping Point propping it up at the start and Pointless being in repeats for so long.

Big thanks to Lewie, Ray Tings, Hassaan, rzt and anyone else providing figures, especially over Christmas and the New Year. Fascinating lists. Clearly BBC1 has had a good year, but 2017 is not so promising having lost or simply not having a number of big hitters.
To me the biggest mystery of all is the unbelievable success of GBBO, but immense tribute due to all concerned as it looks down from its ridiculously high 2016 perch-perhaps with a slight caution to enjoy the view while they can

Good figures for Impossible and it is quite a good play along at home quiz (simple rules but one you want to try to get the answers to before the contestants) so well suited to daytime. Would have done well at 5 pm as an alternative Bradley Walsh vehicle.

As for the alternative endings to East Enders. No way. Otherwise they would have surely gone with one of the others after the Sun spoilered this exact story line months ago soon after it was filmed. They got all the details in print and upset East Enders for doing so.

Though the programme tried to play it down by saying wait and see how it really works out. But unless there are as yet unseen twists then the story so far seems pretty much exactly what was in the paper weeks back.

If there was another option filmed as an alternative then they had months to tinker with subsequent episodes to make the paper look like idiots by using that instead.

The story was carried by the media with the line that the two actresses did not want to be killed off and were bitterly upset at the way they were given no option to return.

Ah, that explains why Tipping Point was so high. I imagine they'll be back to normal (only slightly lower) tonight.

I watched Impossible yesterday afternoon and thought it was promising. Interestingly it was from the creator of Tipping Point. He likes games where coins and coin shaped objects drop doesn't he? Great set and you can play along to it at home. One of the strengths of it is that Rick Edwards is hosting and he does have some personality to him. BBC1 doesn't have a really good daytime quiz apart from Pointless, this might be the best they've had in ages.

ITV's Tipping Point/The Chase combo started at 4.45pm while BBC1's Antiques Road Trip/Pointless Combo started at 5.00pm so everything got a boost. I also think I'm right in saying that Antiques Road Trip helps Pointless more than Flog It.

He's doing a remarkably good job of hiding it then. It all seems very monotone to me. But you're right about this being the best format for some time..

Rick Edwards has a monotone delivery but he can be funny. He injected some humour while talking to contestants and unlike dome other quizzes it didn't feel like boring small talk. After so many poor daytime quizzes on BBC1 Impossible was a pleasant surprise.

I didn't realise that the launch of the last Winter series had dipped so much, explains why they've splashed out on national bus shelter advertising this year to promote it.

Just wondering if they're testing Rick Edwards out as a possible replacement for Nick Knowles, not IMPOSSIBLE. Quite enjoyed it, also like Think Tank which could be promoted to the Pointless slot one day.

Indeed. It felt like they were just going through the motions. The pair may aswell have just done a midnight flit for all the emotional impact it had. Doubt many viewers will be drawn in on the basis of that.

Silent Witness down about a million on last year but still a good figure, and against harder competition. Average start for The Halcyon, could have done better.

Love seeing UC over 3 million and a good start for the other two new series. Great night for BBC2.


Good night for Channel 4 as well, Fodd Unwrapped always does well, Undateables is a great returning hit and First Dates Hotel did better than the actual programme. They'll take that!


Disappointing for a Monday and I notice BBC4 don't have much original programming coming through at the moment - looks like the cuts are starting to bite. Ideally I'd want a new programme at 9 every day.


Pointless probably helped by it being a rare day when it wasn't a repeat.


Did he present the Channel 4 Paralympics coverage back in 2012? I never warmed to him... seemed overly sure of himself.


I'd take anything over Think Tank! Appalling quiz.

Some of my favourite CBB's have been on Channel 5. I think the best one was CBB4 undoubtedly. But CBB13 was the 2nd best ever for me. It had a set of fantastic housemates and the feel of the show was a fantastic mix of comedy moments and drama. I obviously loved CBB15 was amazing but it didn't have enough light moments and it all got a bit too nasty.

I thought EE was great. I think tonight will get a better aftermath though. I think EE could pbull in 7m + tonight once again with some luck.

Halcyon could have done better. But it does have a 20-year-old very popular crime drama as a tough rival though. It's as if ITV wanted it to fail already.

Oh I much prefer Tipping Point to The Chase. I find the Chase dull up until the final round, I'd choose Pointless out of the two if I was stuck with live TV. Actually, I'd watch Place in the Winter Sun live and watch Tipping Point on +1.

Or if do the tried and trusted that I've been doing for 15 years and just turn over to Friends.

ITV are providing an alternative, and not just allowing the slot to go to waste. If viewers want to continue watching a 20year old drama on BBC1, then that's their choice.

The Sun exclusive says a second series has been commissioned and they're already looking for contestants but ITV say no decision yet made. The bar has truly been lowered if 2 million can now be considered 'fantastic'!

This is to do with demos more than the raw figures. If it does end up coming back, I don't know where I'd place it personally. Certainly not in the same place again.

"Fantastic viewing figures of over 2m each week" (even despite going up against Strictly) is an exaggeration and a half. I find it hard to believe ITV can't do better there.

I never implied they didn't have a choice. I see you are taking great lessons from Baz in being rude and twisting people's posts. I think it's best if i avoid posting here from now and on. I've been away a month and when i come back, i am reminded why i left DS in the first place.
