I think "bad episode" is just the thread's way of coming to terms with a good rating.

It will probably be the highest rating of 2017, though.

I also think Emmerdale will peak for the year next Monday, and I expect Coronation St to get its highest of 2017 on the Monday of the National Television Awards week.

You've got me watching it now. I know the host from his DC Fancast shows on sky, he's a witty chap. The show seems fine so far, certainly watchable. At first glance it made me think of Everybody's Equal.

Another quiz with no studio audience though the amount of contestants means it doesn't matter much.

I would not be surprised if the show gets the same ratings as got last year. Which is a shame really as Strictly is far better when pressure is put on it, I feel it is a little too comfortable with itself now. But if it works it works.

We can't ignore this big lack of drama in the week though. People may not even associate the programme with the correct channel after the event, and even putting viewer ignorance aside, if it's a programme that could have easily been made for C4 in the first place and felt perfectly at home there then it rather confirms the idea that C5 still has an identity crisis that's no closer to being resolved.”

I do agree about the lack of drama but I think the emphasis of original programming has paid off for this especially last year when The Yorkshire Vet took off and The biographies. I do hope we see more original drama and comedy this year rather than wheeling out Suspects.

Sorry, but it's probably just me - I don't see anything rude about H's post. It's always tough for a new drama to launch and part of me finds it hard to believe it would have done much better elsewhere.

That 20-year-old drama has survived pretty well and is pretty much the only returning title from BBC Drama in London … so given that BBC Studios is now a reality, I'd've thought there would be people ensuring that it doesn't end any time soon.

I'm still surprised that ITV didn't wait and play The Halcyon on Sundays after Sherlock finishes. If they can break up a run of Midsomer Murders, they could easily do the same for Endeavour or Vera, and could easily pick up the CTM audience (especially as there's at least one cast member from CTM in The Halcyon). Do we know what is playing after Sherlock on BBC One?

On a different note, The Sun's 'article' about Meet The Parents just goes to show you can get the nasty tabloid rags to write exactly what you want, providing the sponsorship fee is high enough.

Which is precisely why I said they should bring it back. Quite simply some viewers are worth more than others to itv. TV By The Numbers website simply bases who won a slot by which show got the most viewers aged between 18-49, nobody else matters to them.

I think that's extreme but itv probably loves the MTP demos. It clearly needs to grow to over 3m but a better slot should do that. Channels should be offering a nice mix of programming that attract viewers with a wide range of interests. If some of those shows only get 1-3m, that doesn't mean they should be canned. Especially after a short-run.

Go For It, Magician, MTP and any Diversity series all are suited to that 6pm sort of time on a Saturday or 6:30 on a Sunday.

I think it's Apple Tree Yard after Sherlock. The Endeavour/Vera combo does successfully fill the schedule nicely and I imagine Sundays in March will be either The Good Karma Hospital, Grantchester or Little Boy Blue

UK television isn't as focused on 18-49 ratings as American networks otherwise ITV wouldn't continue to commission crime dramas or something like The Halcyon which skew older. 18-49 is desirable but they are other demographics that are accounted for like 25-54

All I meant was that viewers aren't likely to turn over to new a drama when they have watched SW for 20 series.

There's plenty going on in EadtEnders. The Aftermath of Ronnie and Roxy's tragic deaths, Denise's imminently giving birth, Phil's recovery, Max's self harm, Michelle's secret, Lee's exit. I think Sean O' Connor knows what to do with the show. Giving viewers a gritty but balanced soap. EE is at its best when it combines drama and light hearted moments perfectly.

But Meet The Parents wasn't getting 1-3m. It was getting 1-2m. An awful, awful rating for a programme in a 7pm slot.

I don't see what good bringing back all those above would be. Go For It came back for a one-off special and got 1.6m.

Even if MTP is pulling in 300-400k in the 16-34 demo, the overall numver is no good. It also does no good leading into big programmes at 8pm.

Diversity doesn't deserve a return either. ITV need a cleaner schedule of hits. Not make do with flops, just because they skew younger.

What about The Lion King being destroyed by Frozen on Christmas Day? Or the Harry Potter films being under 2m every night? Or that X Factor's ratings were dire and it should be axed?

All overreactions, and all wrong.

If you're going to use the changing viewing habits, consolidated figures argument at least be consistent.

Apple Tree Yard after Sherlock I think. I think it'll do well, but don't think it'll be a Night Manager sized hit.

I think ITV view Endeavour as slightly less 'throwaway' than Midsomer. It always gets decent Sunday slots and they never break up the series, whereas Midsomer has played midweek for years now and they've broken up the series quite frequently. From 2009-12 when ITV had the Champions League on Wednesdays they scattered the Midsomer episodes through the year on Wednesdays inbetween matches. I think these shows tend to play better as part of a full series rather than scattered though, so I'm slightly surprised they've done it again with Midsomer after running home together for the past couple of years.

I think The Halcyon ended up on Mondays partly because ITV didn't want to put a crime drama against Silent Witness but mainly because they didn't have anything to pair it up with on Sundays. If it went at 9pm they'd have had to put something at 8pm to inevitably struggle against Midwife, whereas Vera/Endeavour cover the full 2 hours.

1-3m is 1-2m. And it did sometimes get over 2m. It also had very good 18-34 reach, can't remember the number but it wasn't that far behind SCD. Getting 2m isn't great but it's not a disgrace against SCD. Not that it should have started v SCD, it should have been on v Pointless.

MTP has less chance of a renewal because it failed against shows not called SCD and I imagine it lacked the demos. It was a poorer version of You Bet with a bad choice of host.

Diversity has never been given a proper show. It shouldn't be that hard to come up with a concept that has more than just them to it.

You can keep one-and-doneing new shows, it won't get you anywhere.

Let's see if EE manages to retain those viewers for the rest of the week/month, or whether the extra viewers will all disappear by tomorrow morning.

I get the feeling SOC is playing a very long game here and will continue to spend a long time building back character rather than letting the show be storyline driven as it was under DTC. It will be interesting to see whether this works or not in the long term because I don't think the show can afford to lose too many more viewers!

BBC One were very fortunate last January/February/March in having two strong six-part dramas to play on Sundays at 9pm. This year, however strong Sherlock may be, it's only three episodes; and Apple Tree Yard only four episodes. That would in theory give ITV a better means of starting something new in that slot, once Sherlock, the known quantity, is out of the way.

I can't help but wonder if The Halcyon was relegated to Mondays because ITV weren't sure how it would go down. It was a Steve November commission and he has come up with more duds than hits … plus there is a new drama chief in place there who is very clearly on a mission to make her own mark at the channel. The overnights were OK, but not overwhelming, and the reviews I've seen have been very mixed. Maybe they were hedging their bets?

I guess we will have to see how the next seven weeks go …
