Not suprised. He does have a singles gold. I think he wanted to carry the flag.

Sorry, no need to be alarmed yet, rumours he 'may' pull out. I misread it with all the other news!

The news just gets better. So Garbine is going to carry him in doubles. Can't see them getting far.

Edit: I've just seen your second post Amelia, we'll see. I think he will withdraw.

With Federer and Rafa absent there's no point on having a bet on a Djokovic v Murray final then, cos lets face it few would bet against it

Put me in a cryogenic chamber and wake me up when it's 2017.

Will you be sharing with Virginia?

That is just so wrong.

I don't see it as a big deal, it's never been that big of a title in tennis, Samprass doesn't have one either and Roger has a gold in tennis anyway.

My disappointment levels are quite high about the mixed doubles, I was so looking forwards to that pairing, it had the potential to be something special.

I also do think, that even though he clearly wasn't fully recovered at all, he made the Wimbledon semis and pretty much had the match in his hands to make the finals.
Would love to have seen them play doubles together.

Can't believe how bad I feel about the news.

Just seen the news about Roger sad times indeed. Was he meant to be playing with Hingis or Bencic? Because it's not like Bencic has been injury free herself this year, if it was her.

And Rafa too perhaps

2016 = the year of carnage.

All 4 Brits in the Kentucky ITF qualifying round lost. 3 of them had been seeded to win.

There appear to be some lucky loser spots available though.
That's pretty disappointing.

Federer done for 2016, shame when the body starts letting you down
I always thought the Olympics was unlikely, but didn't expect him to miss the rest of the year. I am beginning to doubt he will ever come back. As time passes, I hope he will feel less disappointed and increasingly proud of reaching the semis of Wimbledon. The way he fell against Raonic seemed really symbolic at the time...

I think it's definitely grown in importance over the years. No less an illustrious figure than Nadal said an Olympics gold is lower than a Slam but slightly higher than a Masters 1000. And I bet if Novak had to choose between the two, he'd rather win the Olympics this year than the US Open.

I really wish Andy wasn't going though - he already has Olympic gold, there are no ranking points, ut most of all is that ZIka virus. If he was single it wouldn't matter so much, but I suppose he doesn't plan on adding to his family any time soon. Despite all the criticism he gets, he must be really patriotic.

Freya Christie missed out. The other 3 made the main draw as lucky losers. Robson and Dunne play each other, Webley-Smith plays Olivia Rogowska (who beat her in the final round of qualifying).

Thanks for the update!

That's funny about Webley-Smith's match, basically they are re-playing it!

I really expect that Novak wold choose the US open, as I think they all would choose a slam. It seemed to grow in importance a little, but it doesn't seem to be anymore with quite a few players opting out this year.

Tartan, he was playing with Hingis.

I'm not so sure that we will tbh. I think, no matter how great he has been, and he is one of the all-time greats, that he should continue while not really have the ability to win majors, he would be better to retire and not extend his career and settle for quarters and semi's.

I think the time out he will work this out, he can't compete at Djokovic and Murray's level anymore due to age and I for one think he should bow out while still at the very top of the game.

Although Roger says he hopes to be back next year (he would say that regardless), I think it's now a distinct possibility he'll announce his retirement at the end of this year.

I just don't see him competing in major finals any more, and I don't see him being happy to just meander along on the tour waiting for the next injury.

BT Sport get on my nerves. They don't have any facility to show multi courts like Sky and we have to listen to Anne K with her wierd style of commentating emphasising every other word she speaks. Take some hints from Nigel Spears who is sitting beside you.

I'm not sure with Roger, what you describe is Rafa's mentality, he has always said he will play as long as he feels he has a chance in slams.

With Roger, I think he just loves being on tour, I read he is planning to play Perth instead of Brisbane as an AO warm up. He wants to show his kids new places. It just doesn't seem like winning slams is a deal breaker for him.

Personally I thought his ability to win slams faded a few years back. So you could well be right about about him Aaron.

He's down to play the Hopman Cup, but I have a feeling an announcement will be forthcoming before then.
