Just seen Pliskova's trophy and remembered it's awful. You don't want that Andy.
Which he probably won't get as Marin is playing well and Andy is running on fumes.

Maybe it's Jonas' fault. Humpf.

Could be. He knows how Andy plays.

Code violation called on break point. Seriously?

Unlucky Andy. One match too many I feel. But 22 wins in a row is a fantastic achievement and you should be very proud of that.

Now some people might know that I normally don't like praising losers, but I can't blame Murray much today. Cilic was almost completely in the zone for 1st set and Murray clearly looked and played like an exhausted man. One thing we have learnt is he is not Djokovic or (prime) Federer where he can do it again and again and again on a freakish level without getting tired.

Well done Marin. Unlucky Andy, I guess the 13th MS will have to wait.

Roll on USO, where Delpo lands in the draw could decide who wins it.

I'd be a bit surprised if Serena doesn't rebound from last year's shock and take the women's title.

A pity it had to be Cilic. Now get some blummin' much needed rest Andy!

well winning Queen's, Wimbledon and the Olympics was a pretty good run....

i don't think Djokovic or (prime) Fed have done that particular run...

I'm surprised he went all the way to the final but I suppose he can get ready for the US open now

Gutted for Andy after he played all week.

But I think it will be good for to go into the US Open with both pretty good form and a recent loss to spur him on.

Federer once got to 10 slam finals in a row and would have been 20 bar 2008 SF AO loss to Djokovic. Those are the crazy sort of runs i'm talking about.

Shame Andy couldn't get it done, but this time last week he was winning Olympic gold. He deserves a nice rest and then get it together for US Open.

Well, Cilic deserved it really. Muzza couldn't really touch him on serve. Cilic can do damage on fast hard when on and Muzza's FH/movement were understandably off.

Until now, Nole was the youngest Masters winner. Cilic is the one to break that streak...hmm. I'd have preferred it to be Raobot or Grigor. That also ends the run Muzza had of winning in finals against non big 4 opponents (before this his last defeat was Querrey in 2010) and the consecutive win streak is over. Probably for the best as the journos would've brought it up in every presser at the USO and it'd become a burden.

Put it in context. The gold medal was the real goal before the USO, points banked at Cincy were just the icing on the cake. Finally some rest for Andy and a chance to touch base with Kim/Sophia/Ivan. Hopefully he takes at least 2-3 full days off before preparing for the USO.

As a sidenote, I don't wanna see Fergus Murphy or Carlos Ramos umpire any important Andy matches from now on. Shocking at times.

who was it today?

Oh well Andy. At least:

a) you made up most of your Toronto points
and b) you lost now rather than later on in the USO

Yeah, and she already has a WC for USO

Very happy to see Pliskova win.

With Serena now at 184 weeks, I guess she's guaranteed to take over Graf's record on 186? Since she will be ranked #1 for at least 2 more weeks.
Hmf.

She's guaranteed to tie her it seems, since she will be #1 both next week and week after.

Then it depends on what happens at the USO.

AK only reached 3R last year so plenty of points to make up, but as Serena lost in semi, same thing applies to her, and Kerber played quite a lot lately so we might hope for an early exit. Ofc if Serena loses early, Kerber still might overtake her.

James McGee makes the main draw of Winston-Salam, will play Bedene in the first round. Not very often we get Ireland Vs Britain on the main tour.

oh i thought you were talking about winning tournaments in a row....if it's getting to the final didn't Andy have an even longer run than i mentioned earlier? Rome, Paris? (i don't know i'm having sport brain meltdown after the olympics ), Queen's, Wimbledon, Olypmic Gold, Cincy.....did i miss some out?

ATP titles won since USO '09

Shows how well Novak has done, also that Rafa still pretty successful despite his injury woes.

Murray said he didn't expect to get to the final, and no-one else who went deep in Rio got anywhere near it, so it's a great result really. I was particularly pleased that none of the Olympic skippers got to the final, and by all accounts, Cilic has been playing great this tournament, and this is a surface that should suit him. It's nice to see him back up his slam win with a Masters win, so people can stop calling him a one-slam wonder.

I had low expectations for this week, but having got to the final, I had hoped Murray would get over the line, picking up some handy extra points. But aside for being nice for someone else to get a win, I can't help but think it might be good for Murray to suffer a minor disappointment here and remove some of the pressure that might have come with extending his winning streak.

Hi Jem i don't know about Andy at the Olympics match wise, but i know Rafa at one point had played 11 matches in 6 days so it think it took a lot more out of the players who went deep in the competition than a normal ATP tournament would as they are scheduled differently.
