BIB You have to add in the effect of a long hard season though even though the Aussie temps may be higher that's at the beginning of the season, I also think the humidity tends to be worse in NY.

The AO does see occasional heatwaves above 40c and players have been affected by heat stroke before. The difference maker is AO doesn't have the humidity which is the biggest energy sapper. Plus they can stop play with the extreme heat policy and they have 3 roofs now to protect the players, officials and fans.

The WTA has its heat policy for a 10min break between the 2nd and 3rd sets, but the AO also has it's own extreme heat policy when it rockets up to the crazy temps, to suspend play altogether.

Maybe the USO should take a hint from the AO in that case...

Ryan's brother Christian made it through qualifying, but lost in R1. He's had to overcome a lot, making Robson and Delpo's wrist woes seem almost trivial by comparison!

But the heat is not extreme in NY. It's the humidity which isn't considered in the heat rule.

The humidity is serious. It really zaps your energy. I got knackered walking from one side of the place to the other and I've been sitting on my arse all day.

What matches are worth staying up for tonight?

Currenty watching Sock Zverev...

Surprised Raonic went out. The other servebots have struggled so far too.

I'm not sure what's wrong with him but he's definitely injured.

He will be second of the night matches, so not for a good while yet.

I would watch that unfortunately ES1 is broadcasting a Cilic walkover and ES2 a woman's match of no interest.

Just heard Castle having a silly little dig about Twitter re Konta. Personally, if I was looking for a reasoned debate about a British tennis player the last people I would turn to would be ex-British tennis players.

As he didn't tell us can someone please explain the rule she didn't break which clearly made everything okay in his eyes?

Presumably, there is a time limit between sets? How long is it and how long did she take?

Petchey was waffling on about how you can't have a rule for all situations. Sorry, but there is either rule or not and surely something similar to this has happened somewhere in the history of tennis?

Probably fortunate for the officials that she wasn't facing a more volatile opponent.
