That's a sign of the times, both in men's and women's. Players take longer to get to the top now and if occasionally a relative youngster breaks through (e.g., Muguruza) it's hard to maintain the consistency in terms of regular semis and finals.

Truly gutted for Rafa.

The fifth set tie break at the Open is cruel.

I don't like it either, I think there is a good compromise to be found. Let them get to 10-10 or something, then go to a breaker.

I've never liked the fifth set tie break either, such an abrupt way to end an entertaining match. The winner should be made to break serve.

The gap between british number 1 & 2 is still wide but we are at last seeing signs of improvement. Dan Evans match with Wawrinka was a classic.
Edmond has had a great year & we still have the Davis cup to look foward too.

A shame about Konta but others are starting to make their mark.

Only just realised that Petra failed to make the QF's or better at all of the four slams this year, the first time she's done that in seven years. Also, inside the last four years (or twelve grand slam tournaments) she's made the QF's or better just three times. Imagine that! No sympathy here though, didn't she recently make some comments about her training, basically that she couldn't really be bothered with it all, something along the lines of "I'm not the kind of girl who has a racquet in her hand for four hours a day"? Sad in a way, she'll struggle to finish the year in the top 20 when her Singapore points come off.

When Wimbledon introduced breakers they were at 8-8 (between 1971-78).

I can't see the point in waiting. Get them done earlier.

Ideally someone should break serve to win, its not too often that 5th sets go on and on. So more often than not, a break of serve will happen before the cut off. A tie break just seems a bit cheap to me.

Yeah and in the process now only practices on match days to conserve energy. I guess it's to stop the niggling illnesses she picks up and look after the asthma, but you can't just turn up on the day and hope everything is working.

Pleased to read that Andy and Dani Vallverdu have maintained their friendship despite splitting professionally - I thought they probably would because my perception is that Andy is very loyal to his mates, but it would have been easy for it to go the other way with the pressure they are under.

Quote:
““It doesn’t really [change the dynamic],” he says. “The first time when I played Berdych after me and Dani stopped working together, it was awkward for sure, because he was one of my best friends and the media were trying to make it out like it was a grudge match.”

That is slightly disingenuous given the vocal part Murray’s now-wife Kim played in ramping up the energy levels on court with an entertaining tirade of expletives directed in Berdych’s direction during his match against the Scot at the Australian Open almost two years ago”

Geez journalists don't like being criticised do they?

I do feel sorry for Bedene now. He has dropped since Wimbledon.

It was literally one point between them but it sends Rafa out and it questions whether he will ever win another Slam let alone reach a QF at a Slam!
