Fab news! She can have a nice rest for herself, get rid of any niggling injuries, then pick up where she left off by sweeping the 2017 clay season

Have they actually done her a favour with this ban?

Oh wow this thread is going to turn into a shitstorm later. Anyway, she may even be coming back around the same time as Azarenka?

Why, have you ventured out into the wild and seen some anger out there?

They will get rather different receptions.... If anyone can take hate (deservedly in this case, at least some anyway) it's Maria.

Lol! Turned out to be a not so bad gap year in the end. I saw she's been upping her training lately... maybe she already knew? So she's already getting a head start on next season. Physically she'll be the freshest she's been in a while, it'll just be match rust she'll have to contend with. Hmm and perhaps some crowd hostility, but she won't give a stuff about that.

Not yet, but I can only imagine what it's like. I'm sure there'll lots of sassy, salty opinions posted here later though

Meh I don't mind, it's still a year & 3 months she's served so it's not like she's got off lightly and when compared to the outcomes and lack of consistency of the other meldonium cases it's only fair to have the reduction.

Vika has said that ideally she wants to be getting back in training as soon as the baby is born and eyeing a 2017 return.

Her team said they were confident, so maybe they had been given a sneaky hint.

I think she will have an interesting reception, I don't think she will be booed (except in Paris) but there may be a lot of silence when she wins points etc. I think she will cope with it all. I guess this is where being an ice queen helps, if the other women hate her, she won't notice the difference will she?

I think she needs to win a big tournament to prove she can play without her vitamins.

Possibly, but I think we should all remember that we all agree she was wrong and deserved punishment. Its the severity of the punishment and the seriousness of her misconduct that we all differ on.

I would love to be a fly on the wall in the locker room! She does have some allies like Kuzzy, but yeah in general it'll just be the norm. Given how Maria feels about the Paris louts, that won't be anything to worry about.

Echo that sentiment. The ban itself was not the issue, it was the lack of consistency across the board in all these cases, when Maria seemingly had the harshest punishment going and others were going to CAS and being let off willy nilly.

Interesting comments from Andy and Petra - https://twitter.com/carole_bouchard/...95448555454465

Me too

Anyway Maria can count herself lucky and unlucky, such is the weirdness of this issue. She'll certainly be fresh next year, so it'll be interesting to see how well she does on tour.

Was it the same woman who went after Robbie Williams?

Great news about Sharapova! I'm not sure how they justify reducing the ban but it's good news for us fans, nevertheless.

'Arm-stroking maid'

That really is odd.

The Twitter post from Head about the reduction in her ban must be one of the most cringeworthy pieces of marketing I've ever seen.

CAS already said Maria forgot to bring Meldonium with her to Australia in 2015. Where she went on to win Brisbane and make the finals of Australian Open. So she's already proven she doesn't need the "drugs"

Surprised Cibulkova lost today. Konta on first tomorrow with Pliskova on at the same time. Both would meet in Round 3. Also in Round 3 is Radwanska / Wozniaki, Kvitova / Muguruza and Keys / Kuznetsova.

Sure, we know that. But in the wider world people look at her and think drug cheat. It has forever tarnished her reputation and her achievements. So it will be good if she can go on to win again after this. She won Wimbledon without it, if she was being truthful about when she started taking it. Not that many people will care.

I'd also like it if she told Nike where to shove it and wore Adidas instead. After they stood by Gatlin, they dropped her like a hot potato.

Edit: Just read the HEAD statement, talk about a contrast! Too fawning for me.

Seems about right. She was guilty but also was picked on because of her status in the game (and being Russian didn't help).

Hopefully this case sets an example for any other would be cheats. She's lost over a year of a relatively short career and her reputation has taken a massive hit.
