I can't believe Benjamin Becker is 35.
I think he was the one who played Agassi in his last match at the US Open. He seems to have been around forever.

Yeah I don't agree with that attitude at all. It's about representing your country, being part of a huge team, and from what I hear, good times are had in the Olympic village..... he's missing out.
It seems that Dom won't get it until someone drags him kicking and screaming to the Olympic village. I nominate Jurgen Melzer, tbh.

Haha! What a mess the USA made of that. Just goes to show you need all the component parts to have a successful, well-rounded team in DC. For all of the Bryan Bros success they've only managed to contribute to one DC win for USA. Now they're on the wane, Isner's not going to be around forever and Sock seems a bit injury prone and a mental liability at times.

It's not quite a multi-quote mention, but it'll do.
The USA last won in 2007, when they had A-Rod and Blake as #1 and #2. Defo an upgrade on what they have now. Bryans have an amaze record in DC, as you'd expect (25-4)

I agree with Sock not having a good mentality. Too often he plays on instinct and lacks the patience to construct points, resorting to going for flashy winners that he'll make 5-10% of the time. My rule of thumb is if he's smirking to himself more than once a game, he'll have switched off mentally.

Soz, couldn't multi-quote from a closed thread. Here you go though

Andy isn't going to Toronto.
Pity, but kinda understandable. He played Washington, Canada and Cincy last year and was running on fumes at the USO.

Obviously prioritising the Olympics, but needs to go deep at Cincy to have a realistic shot at YE #1.

I could understand the older players who don't expect to get near the podium giving it a miss if they've already been a couple of times, but I can't imagine that a young player would turn down the opportunity to go and enjoy the experience without any serious pressure. If they have serious ambitions, which you'd hope Thiem has, they can return four years later and take it seriously without feeling they are missing out on the fun.
Indeed. I'm hoping Thiem has serious ambitions, but I'm not sure it's the case. Prove me wrong Dom

That's interesting. Never realised.

I often wonder why there are clay court events after Wimbledon.
They've gotta go somewhere, I suppose. Otherwise the Euro clay season would be crammed and some of the events would get super weak fields, threatening their long term viability as the sponsors turn off the tap. Already we've seen 250 franchises changing hands - Dusseldorf to Geneva, Vina Del Mar to Quito. I think Bucharest is next for the chop on the ATP side.

Well someone had to say it. Nothing would surprise me at this point...

Bastad pays big appearance fees...that's why Serena played a couple of times.
Yep, they go all out on Serena. They put all the eggs in her basket and cross their fingers that she'll be there all week.

Right now I'm thinking of Rafa and him pocketing huge fees at Halle, Basel. He promptly repays the tournament directors by losing in the first or second round...they must love him

Gasquet withdrew today, because of the back injury.
That back injury seems to be a recurring issue. Chances are that Richie won't knock on the door of the top 10 again...

Dan Evans is on Sky now playing his first round match in Washington against Benjamin Becker. Just won the first set.

Why didn't he play the Davis cup match against Serbia - is there something we aren't being told as I cannot believe James Ward would have been picked over Dan?
Well, Jem kinda alluded to it in here. Officially Leon Smith said he had an injury, then added that he had a couple of issues at home and wasn't in the right headspace. Evo's twitter isn't really helping me get to the bottom of it.

It could just be as simple as Evo knowing he was in form/healthy after grass season, not wanting to play on clay and disrupt his prep for the US HC season. He can really make a run for top 50 now.

Good win for Daniel Evans in Washington over veteran German Benjamin Becker.
A very convincing scoreline, but Becker was horrendous. Missing routine groundies by miles and going through the motions, looking miserable as sin.

That probably wouldnt be enough anyway. Hes 815 points behind in the YTD ranking and if Novak wins Toronto then you can add another 1000 to that.

Then again there is plenty of tennis left in the year - 3 more Masters events after the Olympics, US Open and London. Would be surprised if Andy has entered anything else other than those events. Then again, his website seems to have missed the Paris Masters off!

Dan Evans does not like clay maybe thats why he chose not to play Davis Cup.

The Final could be on clay again possibly in France or Croatia if both countries decide to have it on an Indoor Clay Court like it was last year in Ghent.

France would pick indoor clay but if it's GB vs Croatia then the final will be here.

Federer is also not playing Toronto, as well as Nadal and Ferrer. Bencic not playing Montreal. Canada is getting hit hard by the Olympic prep/injury recovery...

No order of play yet.
But Sacremento ITF $50k sees first round Tara Moore v Laura Robson. Tomorrow I believe.

Also Andy too.

I wonder if Novak will be the next one? I believe Stan is playing though.

Yes, Tara played her doubles a day before her singles (she won - and is top seeded).

Naomi Broady has won her first round match in Washington (vs Falconi).

She plays Sloane Stephens or Riza Osaki next

Evans fails to serve it out first time.

He still has one break remaining.

From 3 match points up, he lost 9 straight points.

Great win.

The Dimtov of the last two games was like a different player from the rest of the match.

Dimitrov's career (or what's left of it) continues to slide into freefall.

He probably needs to earn money.

How good do you think Dan Evans could be, if he keeps improving like this

I think he is seeing how good Kyle Edmund had become, and he wants to improve himself

And i can see Evans and Edmund battling out to be Britains number two

You would have thought so but remember he qualified to play in this year's French Open and surprisingly choose not to play.

I know he doesn't like clay but even for a 1st round defeat he would have walked away with 30,000 Euros.

That's true. Makes no sense does it.

Dan seems to dance to his own beat as far as scheduling is concerned.

Do you think that missing the Davis Cup has ruined his chances of playing against Argentina, as he could have easily have beaten Lajovic and Tipsarevic, but now Kyle Edmund has grabbed his chance now, and Dan might have to be back up
