I think it's a good move. As Murray said, simply dishing out financial penalties, and media scorn isn't helping.
Krygios said he was mentally drained, and has admitted to feeling the pressure, so seeing a sports psychologist seems such an obvious move. But this is the man who doesn't even want a coach, so something has to give.
He's a proud man who doesn't like to admit he needs help, so it's clever to make it not quite, but practically mandatory. It makes it easier for him to go along with it, but still feel that it was his choice. Many speculate on him having many issues with how he handles himself in general, so he may benefit from seeing a general psychologist, but if he gets the right sports psychologist, he'll be able to cover those things too. At the very least, he should be able to see the benefits of staying focused for a full match, or learning a few tricks to keep his emotions in check.

I see similarities here with Nick with people with addictions - they have to want to get help otherwise it just doesn't work because fundamentally they don't want to change (yet and/or ever).

Listening to David Law's Tennis Podcast yesterday gave the impression that Nick has taken the 3 week option and is seeing the psychologist.

Yeah that's what it sounded like, it would certainly be the wisest option. I don't know what to make of Nick, the excuse of 'oh he's young, we've all done and said stupid things at that age' may have worked a few times, but it keeps happening. No other player acts like him, except Fognini and who wants to aspire to that?

I don't think it's easy as comparing one player/person to another.
Bjorn Borg no doubt got angry about things he did on court, but never showed it in the manner that Mac or Connors did. That doesn't mean all players of that era could be the same as Bjorn.
Just because the majority of today's players are PR robots and don't say or do anything offensive, it doesn't mean that everyone is the same.
Nick has done and said some very questionable things over the last few years (though I still contend that some of the reaction in media has been OTT), but I don't think just saying "we're banning and fining you until you change" is the only course of action.
I welcome the olive branch of suggesting Nick gets assistance, I hope that it's not just a one off thing and is part of an ongoing solution.
I knew Bencic should've written the season off after the Asian swing. BB overplayed last year, forfeited her offseason by joining a travelling circus and has paid the price for it. Looked utterly bereft of form and confidence against Kasatkina last night. Their embrace at the net was lovely though, they evidently get on well off court (tbh, who doesn't BB get on with...seems to be very popular).
Ostapenko/JJ was pretty routine in the end. Ostapenko will have to improve her FH sharpish as she's being figured out - the CC one is okay but she can't hit inside out or DTL for toffee. Dumps several halfway up the net, and the rest go wide/long. She'll really struggle to beat good defenders without it.

Yes that's kind of what i'm trying to say in a roundabout way. Saying his youth is the reason he acts the way he does is over simplified. If it was so generic, I think we would see more of it elsewhere. So I think whatever the issue is, it's specific to him and not just a byproduct of his age. It could be anxiety, stress, or something completely different, maybe that's just his personality and he can't change, I don't know. But he has to find a way to deal with it, without arguing with members of the crowd.
I agree some things have been overblown, and the media are quick to jump on any questionable behaviour, but the ATP have to react to blatant tanking of matches. That's the one thing I can't defend. I think it was a good idea to offer the reduction with fair terms. He has to be a bit more professional, not change entirely if he wants to avoid further punishment.

Mac was disqualified until 1990 AO (I believe) long after his 'pits of the world' rant way back ini 1981. Connors said and did some pretty bad stuff on caught and as far as I can tell he didn't get sanctioned for it.

Yep saying things like "I don't want to be here" and basically asking the umpire to end the match is a slam dunk (
) in anyone's book I'm afraid. It's disrespectful to the ATP, the organisers and the fans that've paid the money to be unfortunate witnesses to a shitshow.
I don't overtly care about Krygios' behaviour except the tanking. Just can't believe players are allowed to get away with this, should be an automatic ban, so many potential problems with betting and everything, it's amazing he and Paire and Fognini are allowed to do this again and again.

Tanking and doing it so obviously is a real no, no.
Plenty of players have behaved badly in the past and some of the top names but I don't recall the likes of Connors, Nastase, Mac etc EVER giving up - it was outside their tennis DNA.

Gavtilova v Carla will be a tough match for Carla, the Aussie has been playing quite well just lately.
Gavrilova is someone who I was expecting more from this year, started well but didn't do a great deal afterwards.

I think Nick could have denied tanking if he hadn't gone up to the umpire and asked to wrap it up so he could go home. Monfils could at least try and talk his way out of it and defend himself. It depends on the match I guess, letting a set go to preserve yourself for the next is a viable tactic.
When its a one off they can let it go, but when it becomes a pattern of behaviour, it can be seen as purposeful defiance. Punishments are then handed out quicker and with more severity. I'm not sure how fair that is.

BIB: yeah, I did an Open Uni module on language and that really made you think about how language can be used to portray a certain viewpoint and so on. It was really interesting, and I sometimes catch myself thinking about it when I read certain articles.

Yeah sometimes you see or read something that really sticks in your mind. It just shows that the media can put their own spin on anything to make it fit the established story and use certain language to sway people. They all have an agenda, its difficult to know which news outlet to actually rely on.
