I spot that Juan Martin Del Wildcardo has had yet another wildcard, this time into Basel. Assuming this isnt an error, am I to assume that the Olympics wildcard doesnt count towards the maximum of 6 allowed in a calendar year?

It must be, it's the only way it makes sense. The ITF website says this.
'If you wish to apply for a Wild Card, you should get in touch with the host National Association and/or Tournament Director. ITF does not give out Wild Cards.'
Must be, so it means that a player can, in theory, get TEN wildcards into ranking events in a calendar year if coming back from long term injury. All of this on top of using a protected ranking for four (?) events.
On tanking, the difference with Kyrgios is he makes his so blatant and on massive televised courts. Tomic is more subtle. Paire/Fognini/Monfils of old tanked to varying degrees, but it seemed to be a tactical ploy to throw off an opponent in form.
If you're tanking within a team sport, it'll be noticed but your teammates can pick up the slack and you can kinda get away with it. Obviously you can be subbed off. Full on tanking is a cardinal sin in individual sport as there's no hiding place.
Already covered the Delpo WC thing and can't be arsed to get into it again. Said all I needed to say previously.

Sad to see Genie lost her match in Luxembourg, increasingly convinced there's nowhere left for her to go now.”
Gav maybe rides the emotioncoaster too tightly. Her tennis seems closely attuned to her mood...if that makes sense. She can also lose FH timing and trip herself up with DFs.
Genie simply overachieved in 2014. Her true level is around top 30, making the second week of slams now and again. Only so much she can do with her brittle technique.

Sveta has bucketloads of experience and would probably do quite well if the conditions are molasses and high bouncing as expected. Konta would get frustrated against good defenders and the dropshots wouldn't work.
Kyrgios won't be going to Rotterdam next year. Richard Krajicek doesn't want to take the risk knowing that Nick would rather go to the NBA All-Star Game exho happening during that week.
Tennis nick kyrgios has a distinctive reason opted out of the ABN Amro tournament in Rotterdam. The extrovert Australian in February rather attend the annual NBA All-Star game. Tournament Director Richard Krajicek does a double feeling about it.
Kyrgios as big basketball fan delighted with the invitation to the American NBA party on Sunday, February 19th, the day when the final is played in Ahoy. He Krajicek approached several weeks ago through his manager if he could come under his contract with the tournament.
"We wanted to hold him to his contract," said Krajicek. The recent suspension of Kyrgios, following his uninspired behavior at the tournament in Shanghai, the tournament director did decide otherwise.
"You see what can happen when he is tired and has little meaning, as in China. We do not want to put the public. So we decided Tuesday to terminate his contract. We want a top tennis player seen on the runway. Kyrgios prefers his passion beyond his profession. "
Krajicek Kyrgios is disappointed, but understands. "He may therefore be very good. If he every week focused on tennis, he might be mentally burned out after six months. He needs an outlet."
"I have a bad feeling about Kyrgios. With an open mind, I'm going to approach him again for 2018. As we send him or a calendar with you so he can see where the All Star Game, and the ABN Amro tournament" Krajicek says with a wink.
This is what I thought would start to happen, although not so quickly and if Kyrgios ever finds himself in need of WCs then good luck with that when tournament directors funnily enough tend to be more favourable to players that actually want to be at their tournaments.

It's quite spectacular overachievement though, has there ever been any player who went on a huge tear at the slams for one season then did nothing afterwards? Can't think off the top of my head. I still sometimes watch highlights of that beatdown she got in the Wimbledon final, in hindsight it's hilarious anyone actually thought she could beat Petra.

Probably happened quite a lot in the past really. Young players come through and mask their technical difficulties with the confidence of yoof. Tennis is such an huge confidence sport. Especially with someone like Bouchard whose game is based on a low-percentage taking the ball early.
Zvonareva perhaps, even though she was longer lived than Bouchard. Jaeger maybe.
Really hope Jo gets to Singapore. The hate for her on twitter is shocking, even ignoring shes a British player people just aren't liking that she could get there. Tbf tho most are normally very agressively fan boys or girls of either the banned one, pregnant one and the not interested in anything outside the GS one.

We still don't have any updates on exactly whether Jo Konta would be fit to play in Singapore, should she qualify. But it would be nice for her, if she could qualify.

He is good box office - who wouldn't pick him as a wildcard to boost ticket sales.

The even starts in 3 says and it takes 14 hours to fly their from the UK - so Jo will have to decide soon. Given the Moscow final is Saturday the final place will be decided less than a day before the finals start.

I doubt Kyrgios would be in this situation if he had a coach though. Onus will probably be on Hewitt to babysit in the short term.

Just had a gander at the rulebook and I don't think so, as they're ITF events. ATP regs only pertain to ATP events, and the current limit is 5, or 6 with special dispensation.
Perhaps the way to go for seriously injured players is to use protected ranking at the slams and wildcards elsewhere?

Indeed. When you're new on the scene you're really playing with freedom, without ranking-induced pressure and rivals/coaches won't have had time to study your gamestyle, favourite patterns of play. They'll do their homework eventually though.
The onus is then on you to develop other patterns of play, making marginal gains and continually improving your game. Adding stuff like superior serve placement, learning kick/slice serve, transition game, volleying technique, footwork improvements in defence...list is endless.

It can't all be down to her funky ball bounce. It means Jo is a threat to their declining faves and is on the right path
Their hatred for a lovely girl says far more about them than it does about Jo.

Surprised he is still ranked so low though.”
Delpo was done over by the Olympics/DC no longer awarding ATP points. For example, Fed got 450 points for reaching the Olympic final in 2012...with those points, Delpo would've been knocking on the door of the top 30 currently.
