What does Andy need to do to get number 1 now? Any ranking experts about?

Get to the final. I believe that would make him #1 by five points!

Edit - yes. If Murray loses the final this week the rankings would be:

Murray 10785
Djokovic 10780

Add 400 points on if Murray wins the final.

Thanks, he'd be number 1 by a hair! I hope he wins to give himself more space. Could he potentially lose it in London? Ugh, that would be horrible.

Amazing that he can be number 1 by just 5 points. Every point counts.

According to Sky he just has to win his next two matches.

It's worth remembering that Murray's Davis Cup points from last year's final will drop before the YE#1 is decided, so even if Murray does make the final, he'll still be behind Djokovic for that. However, as much as some people would laugh if Murray got it for a couple of weeks only (for now), it would take the pressure off him for next year, and place it all back onto Djokovic.

I must admit, I didn't think Murray had much chance this year, and people were being a bit unrealistic to think he could manage it, but it is getting tantalisingly close. I need to keep reminding myself that ignoring what Djokovic or the rankings are doing, it is already a huge ask for him to reach the final in Paris after the last few weeks, and simply matching the points won by Djokovic is progress towards the top spot.

Me neither. He was so far behind Djoko at the start of the summer it will be amazing if he does get to No. 1.

London is weird. You get 200 points for every round Robin match you win. You then get an extra 400 for getting to the final, and then an extra 500 for winning the event overall. So it's a maximum of 1500 points available. And Murray has never really done that well at it.

So if Murray has the 405 point buffer he could still easily lose the #1 ranking again a mere fortnight later.

OMG I don't know if Andy will be more nervous knowing it is possible.
Come on Andy.

Yes he could but the fact he could make number one at all is brilliant. The points difference after the FO was huge.

This stat is pretty insane.

Whatever happens, Andy's already signalled his intent for next season by ditching the Hopman Cup and returning to Doha.

There was always a huge amount of points difference between them that I never thought he'd be able to do unless he gave up Davis Cup and the Olympics. Whatever
he achieves at the end of the year still bodes well for another exciting year ahead.

I don't think he'd be accepted by a number of people as a true No.1 until he beats Djokovic in another couple of slam finals though.

Yeah I knew Djoko had nearly double the amount of points Andy had before Wimbledon. Someone corrected me on here earlier this week. I knew I wasn't imagining things. What an amazing achievement from Andy to catch him up like this. 👍🏻

Hardly Andy;s fault that Djoko can't get himself to the finals though.

If other players can beat Djoko on the way I'm sure Andy could.

Correct. I'm sure Djokovic has missed a mandatory Masters event too, in fairness. They are both allowed to.

Is Kyle Edmund or Dan Evans replacing Andy in the Hopman Cup?

There were people who said he was crazy to play the Olympics and Davis Cup, and while I knew it was right for him, I did wonder if he might regret it.

There will always be some who criticise what Murray achieves, and that happens for all players, so it is best ignored. They are now in opposite halves of the draw, so Murray doesn't get to play him, or beat him, now he's playing better. No-one was complaining that Djokovic was number one when Murray was recovering from back surgery - albeit they did meat a lot earlier in tournaments back then, thanks to Murray's ranking dropping.

Ultimately, the #1 is about ranking points, so if you have the most, then you deserve it. If you want to win the 'most slams in the previous 12 month' prize, then it's a different category. Same goes for H2H. You can argue that when you win a slam, you are the best in the world for that period, so the world ranking based on points is supposed to be about other things. Murray beat Djokovic and the Olympics, US Open and Wimbledon, and was still ranked below him.

Well done Cilic, tennis fans haven't loved you since...you got Goran as coach. (or ever but too ?)

This will shut the Twitterati up once and for all if Andy gets to No. 1 and becomes the best player in the world.
