The first time Cilic has beaten Djoko. Talk about good timing.

Does Andy really have to win the next 2 matches like someone on Sky said or just reach the final?

There will always be some who criticise what Murray achieves, and that happens for all players, so it is best ignored. They are now in opposite halves of the draw, so Murray doesn't get to play him, or beat him, now he's playing better. No-one was complaining that Djokovic was number one when Murray was recovering from back surgery - albeit they did meat a lot earlier in tournaments back then, thanks to Murray's ranking dropping.

Ultimately, the #1 is about ranking points, so if you have the most, then you deserve it. If you want to win the 'most slams in the previous 12 month' prize, then it's a different category. Same goes for H2H. You can argue that when you win a slam, you are the best in the world for that period, so the world ranking based on points is supposed to be about other things. Murray beat Djokovic and the Olympics, US Open and Wimbledon, and was still ranked below him.”

Great post I'll always see him as No.1 anyway. If they were taking away points, they should have done it retrospectively and everybody's previous Olympic points taken away. Just my very biased opinion obviously

If he wins the next 2 matches he is in the final. He hasn't played his QF yet

Reaching the final is winning the next two matches as Andy v Berdych is a QF match.

I'm glad I can't see it. I'd be too nervous now knowing he's so close to the No. 1 ranking.

I don't know if I'd rather see the showdown at the O2 or if I'd prefer just to see him have the official No.1 status before it.

If he doesn't win here, he'll pile the pressure on himself before the O2 and if he wins here, it might make him look laughable if Djokovic stole it back in London.

Any luck?

Who cares. No.1 is No. 1. Nobody can ever take that stat away from him no matter how short or long it lasts.

It seems like Andy has played a lot recently, but are any of the tournaments extra? Or is he just playing the required amount? (and showing how overcrowded the calendar is).

He didn't need to play Vienna and Beijing, could have just played one of them.

Ah right, so that was tactical for the points, still not Thiem levels of crazy.

Agreed. Some will mock, but it's a bit like "Openly Gay, ex-Olympian top judge". As critiques go, it's still winning at life.

It was only mandatory for him to play one, but there are four slots in the ranking system for 250s/500s and Murray has played just three in the last twelve months, so technically he's under. Davis Cup and the Olympics don't count for anything - if they had, he might have used the points from one of those.

Don't forget, Murray took time out at the beginning of the year when his daughter was born, while most of his rivals were playing one or two of the smaller events. Murray just came back for the Davis Cup, knackering himself ahead of Indian Wells - for no points. He also had both Beijing and Vienna in his calendar since before anyone thought he had a realistic chance of #1 this year, so it wasn't a last minute tactical decision either.

There are some who thought that it was dangerous to play all of those tournaments, and I suspect if Murray had a tougher time of it in China, he may have withdrawn from Vienna, but we've seen before how tired he often gets by Paris and WTF, and this run could still make him vulnerable to upsets.

Berdych hasn't beaten Murray since Cincinatti 2013, 5 losses since an the last 4 of those in straight sets.

He's making heavy work of this first set.

What a mess that tiebreak was. Andy should be thanking the tennis gods for pinching that first set.

Thanks for the updates. This is more nerve wracking than his Wimby final 2013.
