Well, maybe, anyway. Her mental coach died suddenly a few weeks ago. |

He is. I can't tell for certain obviously, but Ana has tried hard for almost a decade to get back to her number 1 and slam-winning form, with many coaches and many restarts and false dawns. I think going back to Sears kind of shows she's half-given up, think she's only playing (and TBH she's not doing much of that) because of her obligation to sponsors.
63rd in the World, didn't win more than two matches in a Tournament all year, hasn't won a match since June. It's over. |

Whilst most of the WTA are now enjoying their holidays, CiCi Bellis has done a bit of vulturing and ends the year ranked 75.
![]() Now, had the player in question been in their mid 20s and won a ton of WTA tourneys...different story. Quote:
So now it's finally all over, your personal highlights and lowlights of the season?
My favourite match of the year, and one that I always go back to would be Serena and Kerber at the Australian Open final. So, over to ye ![]() ![]() - Kyrgios was quality in Marseille and Tokyo before melting down in Shanghai. Now in the dock. - You mentioned Sacha Zverev winning St Petersburg, but I don't think anyone mentioned the resurgence of his older brother Mischa? Qualified for a ton of events and particularly impressed during the Euro indoor season. Nice to see his slicey dicey game on tour. - Schwartzman won his first title in Istanbul. Granted it was mostly because Dimitrov lost the plot, but hey. - Stevie Johnson winning Nottingham was again nice, and was briefly the American #1 as well. Then opened his big mouth at the USO re: Delpo's WC and karma had to intervene ![]() - Ramos-Vinolas and Lorenzi have been knocking around a while, they won their first titles this year. Lorenzi became the oldest first-time winner at the tender age of 34 ![]() - Pouille's emergence has been very welcome. Granted he had somewhat easy draws in Rome and Wimby, but I'd say he deserves his ranking now. Very cool that he won Metz. - Khachanov was playing quality stuff to win his 1st title in Chengdu. Sadly didn't impress on home soil (Kremlin Cup), but he'll have many more chances to make amends. Medvedev did impress though. Russia will be a Davis Cup force in a year or two, I recks. - Unheralded, but Carreno Busta made real progress on hard court this year. I now believe he can reach the top 20. - Monfils finally staying healthy and putting together a consistent year. Reached the WTF for the first time ever and won his first 500 (Washington) - Doubles...obviously, Jamie and Bruno but it was also cool to see Kontinen winning the big prizes in London. Mixed dubs with Hev at Wimby, then the WTF with Jamie's ex. He's a talent who should be a regular winner. Quote:
Anne K is chosen to replace Judy as Fed Cup captain.
FFT is in a mess again. Caroline Garcia has announced she's ditching Fed Cup duties for 2017, wants to put her own career first. ![]() Any ideas who the nouveau coach will be? I know Mouldyglou had designs on it, oui oui. Sacre bleu. Quote:
Fabio Fognini won't be coached by Franco Davin
Quote:
Is Milos still the CEO? Stakeholders will have to ask at the AGM.Quote:
Weird. All the players on the rise dumping their coaches. Keys has split with Hogstedt as well.
Quote:
She's a part-time player, full-time WAG, she just wants someone British based it seems, if Basti gets transferred expect it to end.
Quote:
Two tough losses against Murray in Slams last year is excusable, but losing to ramos-vanilla and Ryan Harrison isn't.

Oh dear that's sad.
![]() I believe Wardy losing his coach Darren Tandy to cancer profoundly affected him, as they were very close. Still hasn't really grieved/processed it. Wouldn't be surprised if Jo drops outside the top 20... |

Oh, IPTL got underway today.
*tumbleweed* Shorn of stars and sponsors, nearly didn't happen at all. Will probably still watch some though, because I'm already experiencing tennis withdrawal. Exhos are better than nowt. EDIT - too late to edit the other post now, but Goffin serving Berdy a double bagel in Rome was hilarious stuff.

^ Maybe Yannick Noah will do both Davis and Fed Cup, or at least until a more permanent solution is found.
Poor Jo, I hope it doesn't knock her confidence for next year.

Just to remind everybody the tennis season isn't totally over this year - setting aside the IPTL.
The wheelchair tennis masters from the Olympic park is on the BBC red button and online today and tomorrow. I was there yesterday as I got some free tickets. For some reason there is no longer any tv coverage of the Albert Hall champions event - even with McEnroe and Henman playing! |

I've been watching the wheelchair tennis too. Such a shame there aren't more people attending, but I'm still enjoying the tv coverage - even if I should have left the house about half an hour ago!
![]() I know it's all different tours, but it would be good if they could use the WTF at the O2 to promote the wheelchair event. I'm not expecting the rude Swiss fans to make a return journey to London, but there must be loads of locals who could make it. I was disappointed the BBC didn't mention it in their sports coverage this morning. I realise it's hard for any sport to get a mention when the football is on, but a quick mention that it's happening, and available on the red button/sports app would have been easy enough. For balance, I'm equally disappointed that "The Last Leg" didn't give it a mention during last night's show either. |

The wheelchair tennis was mentioned on the radio but a) it was a Scottish station and b) Isn't it Gordon Reid playing and trying to become the no.1 player?

Very odd. When we went it was all very relaxed and no one ever checked our tickets anyway. The venue is about a 10 minute walk from Leyton central line station or there is a shuttle bus from Stratford Westfoeld shopping centre - with free parking for blue badge holders at the venue. Was lucky to get some free tickets - cos the food at the cafe was more expensive than at Wimbledon! Would recommend it though - it's back there for At least one more year in 2017. |

A quick question for the more knowledgeable tennis fans in here then myself, after seeing the speed that Laura Trott has gone to Laura Kenny, it got me wondering why Anna Ivanovic is still known by that name rather than Anna Schweinsteiger, does anyone know why that is?

Ana Ivanovic is kinda a global name, as much as I like Laura Trott hers isn't.
In the end it is quite possible Ana calls herself something different in her private life, but having To change all her Yonex bags to being italicized Ana ivanovic-Schweinsteiger would probably ruin the lines. |

Just wondering - which players, on both the mens and womens side, have won the most slams without ever being world no 1? I'm wondering if it's Stan for the men but it's so recent I don't really think so.

Elina Svitolina is apparently going out with bean-pole cricketer Reese Topley.
Yeah, it's off-season hence why I'm sharing. |

Very interesting interview of Boris Becker by the Daily Mail. First of all it sounds as if he won't be back coaching Djokovic. More intriguing though are his comments about Andy getting to #1, he thinks Andy will "ride the wave" until the clay season, when he'll find it a lot tougher to stay at the top. Perhaps it's true, but it very much smacks of 'enjoy it while it lasts' imo, particularly when you take his previous bitter comments into account.

Roger and Serena pulled out of the IPTL over uncertainties about the tournament. Only two top twenty players in it.
