That is terrible news. It's her playing hand as well. Wishing you a speedy recovery Petra.

OMG that's awful, poor Petra and her left hand as well.

Congrats to Vika, I didn't think she'd be dropping this side of Christmas. That means she won Miami without losing a set whilst pregnant!

From Petra herself on Facebook:

Quote:
“Thank you for all your heartwarming messages. As you may have already heard, today I was attacked in my apartment by an individual with a knife. In my attempt to defend myself, I was badly injured on my left hand. I am shaken, but fortunate to be alive. The injury is severe and I will need to see specialists, but if you know anything about me I am strong and I will fight this. Thank you all again for your love and support and now I would appreciate some privacy while I focus on my recovery”

A "severe" injury, will likely mean a long injury layoff then so to allow her hand to fully recover. It was a defensive wound as well, meaning the person was intent on killing her, or at least severely injuring her. Bizarre and scary.

Did they catch the guy who did it?

I just read that how awful. Hope she recovers well.

Not yet - there is a manhunt going on to find the attacker.

Dreadful news about Petra. Sounds very serious. I wish her a speedy recovery.

Poor, poor Petra, how utterly shocking, I cannot really believe it.

She is so lucky to be alive, she will most likely need help withtherapy after this, my god, in the safety of her own home!

On a different side completely, congrats to Vika on her baby boy. What a complete juxtaposition.

Indeed my exact thoughts wish the best for both though in their vastly different positions.

Reading more about it, the injuries seem more serious than was initially implied. Needless to say, we won't be seeing her back on court for at least a few months. The outpouring of solidarity she's received on Twitter tells a lot about the kind of person she is.

The wording of Ben's tweet about the surgeons repairing her left hand as much as possible sounds very unsettling indeed.

Everyone rallying around her is heart-warming to read, she's going to need all the support after experiencing a horror like that. Anna Chakvetadze had a similar experience, she and her family being tied up by a gang of armed robbers at her home and she was never quite the same after.

No, the fact it is all her fingers on that hand and both the tendons and ligaments, it may be hard for her to even grip a racquet again, it can be hard to bend or straighten a finger if it's that bad.

Still, she was clearly in a fight for her life as it was pressed to her throat, it doesn't bare thinking about what happened to her hand to get the knife away from her throat.

I hought of Seles too, the emotional damage that this will do, for it to happen in her own safe place of her home too.

The messages are lovely to see, I'm sure every player and tennis fan will be behind her in this.

It's just so shocking.

Well yes obviously, but I didn't want to go into the minute graphic details of it all.

So shocking about Petra. It sounds terrifying and I wish her a speedy recovery. It doesn't bare thinking about what might have happened if she wasn't so physically strong.

But fantastic for Vika. What a day.

Yeah. it's probably just best to let the surgeons do their thing, it's amazing what they can do nowadays, let's just hope her recovery will be as good as it possibly can be at this point.

No need to say sorry.
I feel exactly the same as you, I think it's just unbelievable this whole year, I think that's why I was in that frame of mind in all honesty and then when I am like that things kind of pour out of me, that seems to be my way of dealng with it all.

But yeah, I am sorry, lets all just collectively hope for a much better 2017, it cannot be much worse.

She's won the sportsmanship award, voted by the players, for about four years in a row which is evidence that she is really well thought of both on and off the court.

Update on my Petra:

This is from a Czech (sp) paper, but a Czech poster and fan on TF translated it:

"She should be out for 3 months at the very least. The surgeon said she is young and there is no reason she should not be able to play tennis after it heals."

A bit of positivity at least

Just seen that she had ligament damage in all 5 fingers and two damaged nerves. Can not bear weight for 3 months. via WTA Insider.

I doubt she will play at all in 2017. I reckon 2018 French Open is the earliest she will return. I feel that she grabbed the knife.

Horrible news. Seeing that hand has won her 2 Wimbledons and millions of Pounds in prize money.
