The news about Petra Kvitova is horrible. To think of what she must have gone through is frightening in itself, let alone being in the situation yourself. Really hope that she recovers and can resume her career. Horrible thing to happen, that you wouldnt wish upon anyone. Very very sad that people would do such a thing. So unnecessary. And so sad that it has cost her a year of playing tennis, effectively cutting most of her income and taking away from her something that she has worked all her life for.

The latest update sounds a lot more positive, obviously a long way to go what with recovery and rehab, plus the fact she's still suffering with the stress fracture in her foot, but from a quality of life aspect the signs are good. Hopefully Petra can be left in peace to enjoy Christmas with her family and take it day by day.

It's not only the physical but the mental/emotional side of it as well.
I wish her a healthy recovery. I've always liked her, although I don't overly follow her but she has one of those personalities that makes you smile, you know? & she is a fellow lefthander and I have a soft spot for them being one myself. |

Cast for 6-8 weeks and can't bear weight for 3 months... I'd hazard a guess Petra won't be returning until the Summer at the very earliest. US Open will possibly be the only slam she'll play next year, if that at all. She hasn't actually missed a slam since RG 2009.

I've only just heard about Petra, its just awful. Reading about her injuries made me feel sick, I hope she can recover emotionally, it must have been terrifying. I would say playing tennis is not her priority, but then why should she let someone take that from her? I hope she gets all the support she needs and gets back to doing what she loves.
2016 just won't let up will it? |

Further update:
Doctor confirmed that she grabbed the knife with her hand and that's why all the fingers were cut. And also he said that after six months she can put a real weight on it and basically start playing tennis again |

This is sounding like 2017 is basically over before it started for her. Can't see her back before the US Open, it just sucks!!!!

Delpo is unlikely to play Aus Open. Says he needs to be fitter to play whole season.

I have a feeling she probably knew that from the off. Her first quote said she is lucky to be alive and she doesn't come across as someone who would exaggerate.

He's never had much success there, so it sounds like a wise move for him. He doesn't need to try to get fit for best of five in high temperatures, and can focus on other aspects of his game and fitness for the smaller tournaments that follow where he's got a great chance to gain points. |

Sad for the fans, but there will be a lot of top seeds breathing a sigh of relief that they don't risk meeting him in the first round.

To think that three of the WTA's biggest stars were all taken out of the game in a single season, albeit for wildly different reasons, 2016 will certainly be a year to remember.
I'm probably looking forward to Vika's return the most, she's indicated she wants to get back on court asap. I think the US Open will be the big target, I honestly wouldn't put it past her to do a Kim Clijsters. |

Merry Christmas to everyone on the tennis thread!
Only one week to go before the Abu Dhabi world championships on Eurosport with Rafa and Andy and Milos back playing again! And then Hopman cup with Dan Evans and our Hev playing for GB and Doha and Brisbane soon after. Can't wait! |

Oh right yes - amazing how much I don't miss her shrieking presence.
Anyway talk Ivanovic may miss January too, IF so pretty iffy as she was happy to play IPTL, honestly semi-retired IMHO. Big names need replacing really. |

![]() She props up draw's if nothing else. She was (hopefully is still) a reliable player to have in the mix. I've missed her though, I still don't know how I feel about the whole 'thing'. We'll see when she comes back I guess. |
