Elvis did not need to write his own songs. He had the best songwriters in America doing it for him - Leiber & Stoller, Doc Pomus & partner, Scott & Blackwell and many others. He could pick and choose as they all came to him with their best material. Inevitably Elvis did a lot of covers especially in the early years as he was not a writer but did so many more original recordings. You're wrong about the covers. clayton_st has it correct.
