That's the only place it would be, if it qualified. That was one slightly surprising fact I heard, Germany hasn't qualified for the Olympic football since 1988.
They just lost in the final to Brazil a couple of days ago.

Three non GB Olympic highlights for me.
The Bolt man.
Fiji 7s team
The gymnastics in general. My kids are right into this now and it's a great thing for them to enjoy.
I remember posting on here before the games started that I wasn't that enthusiastic about them. What a load of rowlocks, the games were brilliant. Roll on Tokyo
Well said that man!

I also said that I would look away when the games started because of all the Russia controversy, the spinelessness of the IOC and the fear that Brazil would be stitched up.

Being a sports nut I took a little nibble and was hooked before you could say presto!

There was so much to love.

Drugs tests to the fore and procedures tightened and Russia finish way down the list compared to their other games. I look forward to the follow up tests on China.

Lord Coe today saying what a wonderful games it is and how proud he is of how they went. The is the man who has presided over the worst drug scandal ever, tried his best to gloss over it and then totally bottled a decision to ban known cheats. Seb, it went well despite you, not because of you.

That saying, I did enjoy most of it and had many, many highlights, but the best to me is the interview with Nick Skelton. When the overexcited reporter was shouting eulogies about being the oldest gold medallist he simply said, in a beautiful phlegmatic flat twang 'Oh. Really?'

Indeed there were. I will list my three favourites, although if I posted tomorrow I would probably come up with an entirely different selection:

1. Justin Rose. Pleased as punch and bursting with pride. Showed up Rory McIlroy and company for their total disdain of the games.
2. Katherine Grainger - what a gal.
3. Nick Skelton, a previous broken neck and hip replacement were never going to stand in his way.

Just a word of defence for Rory.
I think he was in one hell of a dilemma who to play for and would have got foul abuse whatever way he went. Think the Zika thing gave him an opt out.
Was that course built for the Olympics? Looks like a course that golfers of all abilities could enjoy. I defo would love to have a blast round there.

I hear what you say about Rory. But what about all the other players who opted out? I used Rory's name because it is the one with which I am most familiar. When the likes of Neymar, Andy Murray and on and were happy and honoured to be there, just who do they think they are?

I agree. He had agreed to represent Ireland and would have got an awful lot of clog if he had. The virus was a very fortunate cop out for him.

Really?
Thinking about it I can't remember any European team playing in the Olympics pre London.
I remember France winning it once in their heyday, but it seems to have been dominated by south American and African teams. In the old 'shamateur' days the eastern europeans used to clean up.

'Germany hasn't qualified for the Olympic football since 1988.'

My mistake on understanding tenses.

Well obviously they were playing this time, so the meaning was clear.

Sorry, but it was not. 'Germany has not qualified since 1988' is quite a definite statement.

Anyway, no more on it. L'ennui.

They are the most pathetic human beings I've ever come across. Just such bitter and twisted prats.

Radio 5 are no better, now their free jaunt is over they are asking "was it worth is" and like Talkcrap telling us each medal cost X hundreds of thousands.

It's utter moronic crap. They make it sound as if the athletes are rolling in money. Most of that funding will go on the coaches, equipment travel costs and so on.

The media in this country really do like to stick the knife in don't they? Sad sad sad little people

Chelsea win again after another late goal from Costa who AGAIN should not have been on the field. I do hope Jacobs isn't moaning later in season if Chelsea ever get a bad decision.

BigAl + BigJohn going on about Vierra's comments that present AFC team not as physical as the one that went unbeaten for a whole Premiership season.Hardly a mention of LFC getting beat by a lower ranked team BFC.

Early doors BigAl said he hadn't seen the WHUFC v BFC but some of his pals had been.
Later he said that Bournemouth had played well. How did he know?? had his pals told him??
This is the highest paid presenter at the biggest sports station in the world and all they can advertise him as is someone who drinks a lot, gambles a lot and misses work a lot. Let's hope Murdoch's boys have a real clear out.
I don't just want a clear out I want public executions of the worst offenders, the guillotine would be my favoured method that way they can stick Brazil's severed head on an highly erected sharp pole on Westminster Bridge together with the heads of Quinn, Forde, Goldstein, Gough, Abraham, Cork, Parlour, Cundy, Delaney, Durham, Glendenning, Goldstein, Houghton, Kelly, Matterface, Murphy, O'Sullivan, Pearson, Richardson, Rushden, Saggers, Schonhofer and the man that sends you into deep sleep Ray[YAWN]Stubbs.

Ah but he's changed the subject now. When I tuned in 15 minutes ago his first words were (can't remember verbatim, will paraphrase).
"What is wrong at Arsenal?"

I think a more enlightening question should be:
"How earth do I keep this slot on Talksport"?

Turns off Talksport.

I listened to a bit of H&J today, and they usually have intelligent people on. It seems to me that they're having more Sun 'journalists' now that Murdoch has bought the station.

Anyway, this guy, I don't know his name, was discussing Arsenal, being a bit more measured with his criticism than is usually the case. And the conversation comes around to the signing of Mustafi. And this 'football correspondent' said of Mustafi "is he another winger who can play up front?". And Paul Hawksbee had to correct him and point out that Mustafi is a centre-back.

Here are the ways that a 'football correspondent' may have recently discovered that Mustafi was a centre-back.

(i) He played for Germany in the Euros at centre-back, scoring against the Ukraine.
(ii) The potential signing of Mustafi has been probably the most high profile transfer saga of recent weeks.
(iii) Arsenal notably need a centre-back, as they've had an injury crisis in that position, and it is well known that they are looking for one.
(iv) He could have Googled it.

Still, you can't necessarily expect a football journalist to turn up and know what position people play before slagging off the person who is trying to sign them.

The funniest bit of the two plebs Dungbeetle and Guff was them suggesting that unlike the Lottery the public are not ripped off by football as it's all rich owners who use their own money

I couldn't stop laughing at that. Anyone remind me how much a season ticket is and a Sky Sports subscription and a BT sports package, not to mention a ManU TV subscription is? That's before we get to replica shirt costs and the cost of a pie or a burger.

These two really are the intellectual equals of dry dog poo.

Well if you had a tenner you'd be able to get 5 lottery tickets.

At a football match you might just get a programme and a beer or pie.

Mind you they probably never have to pay for the latter..

A station that appears to live off freebies.

I'm still working out how the 'Mooz' got to go to the USA? Boozy can't be happy with that.

Yes I could not believe I was hearing this.

Suggesting that Olympic athletes have it easy compared with their precious footballers have they any idea how much training and commitment these athletes have to commit too?

And suggesting the Olympic athletes get to much money!!!!

They talk about being positive about our chances in the Euros yet when we achieve incredible results at the olympics they are desperate to find negative stories,

Hypocrites both of them.
