That is just media nonsense. For starters that money is spent funding not just the athletes but the coaches and equipment. The money is spent on the sport and the athletes which includes the athletes training and competing in other events. It wasn't just the winners that were funded it was the majority of the team. Some athletes are not funded via the lottery but get income from other sources.

Look at how many athletes we sent, then the number of people employed to look after the athletes and then the money that gets spent on hotels transport and filters back into the economy. That 300 million isn't sitting in a bank, it's spent in the economy.

It's like the London Olympics. You can argue if we should have spent the money but the 9 billion or whatever it cost was spent on buildings and goods and services. Mostly private companies that employ the likes of you and me. Those companies in turn pay taxes back to the state and help keep the economy turning.

In terms of the Olympics thing, you could say that public money is invested in football via Sport England (just one example), and the national team has won nothing for 50 years, so that is literally an infinite amount of money per winner's medal over the last five decades. They do this kind of stuff all the time:

https://www.sportengland.org/news-an...ll-foundation/

I don't agree with that argument, it's absurd, if anything more money should be invested in playing fields for kids and a lot less should be handed to private banks and corporations, but if you want to get picky about it then football has shown zero return on its investment in England.

I hope TalkSPORT haven't dropped 'Up The League' from it's schedules as it's one of the shows that deserves an extra hour, if not more!”

Oops hadn't seen Peachy's post earlier.”

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but it appears as if Up The League has been cancelled - at least as a regular weekly programme. Geoff did put out a season preview on the first Saturday of the Football League season, but since then the Saturday 6-7am has been filled by these My Sporting Life hour long "Best Ofs". Geoff's taken the Up The League host bit out of his Twitter bio which I think tells you all you need to know - although I think his illness the other week is just a coincidence, as despite that he's still doing lots on the station such as co-hosting The Player's Lounge with Matt Holland a few weeks ago and covering Extra Time during the week just gone. He also seems to be the main cover host on Matchday Live whenever Adrian Durham is away, now that Ian Danter is the regular presenter of talkSPORT 2's equivalent show.

I'm really sad to see Up The League go, it was one of the few must-listen shows on the station for me and a programme they could and should have given a more prominent timeslot to on talkSPORT 2 - perhaps in one of the weeknight 10pm-midnight slots shows like Cricket Week and Fight Club get. Hopefully they can incorporate Football League content better into their Kick Off slot, I really enjoy Geoff's weekly preview with Matt Holland on Friday nights and wouldn't mind hearing another show like the one they did a few weeks ago when Geoff joined him in the studio for a few hours.

I've been a bit disappointed with many of talkSPORT's recent scheduling decisions outside of their live football coverage at the moment. I actually think they have done well in reshuffling their football coverage in the wake of Stan Collymore's departure; replacing his phone-in on Saturdays by effectively moving Danny Kelly's Season Ticket forward and extending Sunday Exclusive to 6pm on Sundays was a low-key but efficient way of doing things and both shows have sounded pretty strong since the change. I also think it's a masterstroke to make Jim Proudfoot their regular Sunday afternoon commentator as he's a superb broadcaster, one of the best around in my opinion, and I highly rate some of their early choices of post-Stan Premier League co-commentators in Danny Higginbotham, Stuart Pearce and Alvin Martin. They've also made some good additions to their already very strong reporting team such as darts commentary legend John Gwynne and ex-BRMB lynchpin Tom Ross.

But while that aspect of their output is largely good, the decisions to end Up The League and Full Contact in favour of a clip show and an oddly-positioned edition of The Two Mikes (I do wonder if they are keeping the Sunday night hotseat warm for regular NFL coverage from next month, given the gridiron-based shows with Nat Coombs that are going out on talkSPORT 2 at the moment). With Danny Kelly moving forward, they've got an empty slot vacant on Saturday nights that seems set to just be occupied by pre-recorded filler, The Warm Up is rank and I don't do the Weekend Sports Breakfast. In the week, the Sports Breakfast and Drive Time seem to be stagnating and to cap it off Charles Sale is reporting that the dreadful Jim White is poised to take over the mid-morning slot. If that's true, I certainly won't be listening to him.

I guess I can't grumble too much, as a lot of talkSPORT 2's output is much closer to my listening tastes and serves me well, but outside of H&J and the live football timeslots, there's not much that appeals to me on talkSPORT.

Sam is said to be thinking of bringing back John Terry. That'll go down about as well as his signing of Joey Barton while at Newcastle.

Cundy of course defending anything Chelsea and widing the opposition up!

Liverpool beat Arsenal last week and were "title contenders" and now one defeat means Klopp is rubbish..

Sums up the typical football debate really (so short team and conflicting its unture)

Be like saying Mo Farah is a rubbish athlete if he doesn't win a race...

Tuned in just in time to hear Korky the Cat attempting to make mirth with Boozy, they then played that annoying who will win the Premier League thingy with Stuart Pearce, followed that with a trailer for Durham & Gough and then on came Beeky, ... what a truly talent laden radio station this is.

I can't take it no more!

Both Dungham and Goffy are absolute scumbags of the highest order with their continuing and unnecessary vilification of the GB Olympic team!

Why not just celebrate the last couple of weeks and be proud of the many medals won instead of being negative towards the team and the Olympics in general.

All this 'what can the England football team can learn from the Olympics' rubbish is the same reaction when both England Cricket and Rugby teams have done well but l can't remember these two d*ckheads having a full blast discussion then?

Great news for Big Al on the freeloading front.
The Ryder Cup is the week before the Arc so he can stuff his fat face at someone else's expense. He was straight in when the bookie guy told him the events didn't clash.

Typical the fat freeloader couldn't even be bothered to check the dates himself" Och,ah cannae be rrrsed, ah've tae much scrounging to do, aaaah sorry ah mean charridee wuk"

BFAl was jeering at his lap dog Corky for not going out on the lash with him after the show but he had arranged to meet Hank Pott for a session. Henk is a senior bank official who goes on the razzle with BF Al, so what condition will he be in later in the afternoon?
People used to laugh at Irani but this guy Corky is an even bigger lickspittle, greaser
who will do anything to ingratiate himself with the giant freebie chaser.

(I would do anything but I won't do that)

Everyone on here must be breathing a sigh of relief to read that Bangla the Ryder and the Arc just wouldn't have been the same without sporting giant Alan Bernard there at both.

What an icon of sport Brazil is and surely soon it simply must be Sir Alan Bernard for all his excellent work in promoting good healthy sport to the world.

Just what the team needs, a 35 year-old who is way past his best and was nearly released by Chelsea, who will be well on the way to being 38 by the time of the next major tournament, and who has racially abused other players by his own admission.

Because as far as Dungbeetle is concerned the ONLY sport that matters is football. When he and Guff reckoned that people are being ripped off doing the Lottery funding the Olympics and that football supporters are not you know that the two knuckle draggers have jumped the shark.

This.

However, the sagacious Adrian Durham not only wants him back in the England team, he wants him back as captain.: There are no words.

I won't listen to that station apart from one show. But this goes beyond people having stupid opinions on football. In any other workplace, he would have been sacked. If you'd said what he said in the offices I worked in, your feet wouldn't touch the ground. Additionally, no-one would stand up for you, your colleagues would consider your conduct unacceptable.

What Terry said was not some mild thing, not some possible cultural misunderstanding by a non-native English speaker under extreme provocation like Suarez, it was outright abuse. The court ruled that his defence was a lie. He was later forced to apologise, as if apologising can make it better. He's got off with virtually no consequences to this act whatsoever, except rightly losing his England place and captaincy. Now he should apparently be back in the team and even made captain! Because he's a 'leader'.

People wonder why we're a second-rate footballing nation.

John Terry resigned from the England team FOUR YEARS AGO.
He's 35+ now and so will be 37+ when next WC comes along.
I think he's past it as an international but did a good job when he played years ago.
Why should an England manager go, cap in hand, and beg him to come back to save the England team as Dungleberry is reported to have said?
If Allardyce wishes to be respected he should stand firm against the gutter press and not even mention JT again.

Danny Kelly will be girding his loins and sat by the phone waiting for the call tomorrow if BigF Al has been on a bender today as he was bragging about. Poor old Dants has lost all his overtime to Spurs loving DK who will turn up for the opening of an envelope for a few extra Murdoch shillings.

They really do need to bring in fresh blood. I hate seeing the two Mike's getting kicked around the schedule, I like them on overnight.

Nice use of the word "sagacious" makes a note of it to use myself in future after I've looked up what it means.

Anyone else getting a repeat of the content every few minutes on DAB?

It's segments which last about 30-45 seconds.

I was experiencing this too. It's not the first time this has happened when they have an 'around the grounds' show!
