Fascinating stuff from John Cross this morning at 7.00am re the future of football, super leagues etc etc. Worryingly interesting.
![]() http://www.independent.co.uk/sport/f...-a7233496.html I think this is basically inevitable. I thought for some time that there would be a European Super League eventually, but this makes even more sense. China is such a massive market, you can scarcely fail to make money over there with anything popular, and when you see these meaningless pre-season friendlies in the States are there are over 100,000 people there, it's quite obvious that there is huge potential. Obviously fans of smaller clubs won't like it, but the Champions League is almost a procession anyway. It's natural for the biggest clubs to want to play more games against each other. Sooner or later something of this nature will happen because there is a compelling economic need for it to happen. Don't know what will happen to the other competitions or how it will work, but in this day and age there is little point in Real Madrid playing Legia Warsaw. Every other sport is organised around getting the biggest protagonists together as often as possible, and I think the big clubs will push for this sooner or later. |

While I'm in total agreement that it's extremely difficult for anyone other than big clubs to survive in the top two divisions now, I just wanted to mention a positive aspect of football over the last couple of decades.
Much more opportunity is now afforded to clubs who were traditionally outside of the Football League. Burton Albion are now in the Championship, having not been a league club until recently. Fleetwood are already in the promotion spots in League 1, with AFC Wimbledon also in that division. And Morecambe, Crawley, Stevenage, Barnet, Cheltenham, Accrington, Wycombe and Yeovil all have league status as well. My team Grimsby suffered from this because we were out of the Football League for years, but offering two promotions spots every year (I think it should be three) has meant that lots of smaller clubs have something to strive for. I have a bit of a problem with it as virtually all those clubs have poor attendances and don't travel, few have just done it with big funding too, and are basically the Chelsea's and Man Citys of lower league. Hey I'm certainly not against promotion from the Conference, but it's actually not been that huge a success for the clubs that come up really, 1988 was it? and two Championship clubs. Does show that being a football League club means something, and it being there for generations, create bigger interest and big crowds. Again though, I'm not against the system, it helps Division 4 because more clubs have something to play for. Gawd I remember the days with no play-offs and no relegation threat and come March 80% of the matches could be irrelevant, horrible spectacles and crowds. Also relegation can be a kick-up the backside for clubs to rejuvenate themselves, as mine did, rather than coast. So I'm always happier when an old-fashioned League team get promoted. |

I caught a bit of Gary Neville and Nicky Butt being interviewed tonight, talking about Salford City. I was only listening for a brief 10 minutes but it was well worth the listen.
A good discussion, more of which would be highly welcome. |

Tony Cascarino seems to have replaced Micky Quinn on Talksport.
Maybe a chance of intelligence football/sporting chat? Although he doesn't seem to understand the "new" rules on shirt pulling/holding in the area.. |

Hope Gough was watching today and apologies for saying Barton is a better player than Brown.
Did you see Barton nearly pass the ball in his own net and blooter the ball out of play when trying a pass over five yards. Guy is a wage thief and the bankrupts should ditch him ASAP. |

I've gone against all my beliefs and bought the pay-per-view for tonight's world championship boxing live from the O2. I tried, lord I tried to resist but Kell Brook lives only about six or seven miles away from me and I so much want to see this fight I've bloody well spent 18 quid to watch it.
[obviously being a Yorkshireman it was a major financial decision and a hurtful one I shall be staving the whippets for the next month to get my money back] Serves me right if it's all over in 28 seconds for paying it I know. ![]() I am sooooooooo looking forward to THIS one. Come on Kell even if you do support the enemy across the city. |

Yes Yes Yes well done Rammy for stuffing Abrahams beloved Hammers.
![]() Bit of a shame after the action today from 10 TS seem to just have a repeated My Sporting life rather than a programme about the stuff that has gone on or is going on. |

Well done. I didn't watch it, but apparently he was getting beaten pretty badly when they threw the towel in.
Wonder if Degale will get in the ring with GG? He won't last as long as five rounds. |

I know it is considered a dreadful remark, but Eubank Jnr's 'No towels in my corner' remark did make me smile.
No need for a towel for him against the G man. He would be spark out before trainer got a chance to throw it in. |

The referee told promoter Eddie Heard straight after the fight was stopped all three judges had Brook in front on points so much was Brook's brave efforts against all the odds in the early rounds but alas you can't artificially pump up fighters to fight in higher divisions against supreme outstanding champions like Gennady Golovkin and expect them to win. |
