I would guess the greater part of all football followers are far more interested in their own club than our underachieving national side. I was out in the pub yesterday and saw Rooney doing a press conference on the 3 TV sets and a large projector screen [they've made my local a sort of sports bar] thankfully the volume was low and the music in the pub loud and I didn't have to hear the usual boring soundbites.

I think if you are a committed fan to a club and watch them regularly then I would agree that it's club before country. On the other hand for armchair fans without a particular allegiance then maybe the national team ( when it's doing well) could take preference.

I notice that Alan did not say about his thoughts on Scotland in this context and wouldn't comment on the forthcoming game v England when Ray was trying to get an answer.

On the odd occasion when England have been doing well in a tournament eg 1990 and 1996 the pubs were chocka with fans but when as recently, they are doing poorly then
the support drops.

Being an old codger, I can remember 1966 and can assure that the country was well behind the team which, after a poor start , played well. My disappointment was that Jimmy Greaves( best England striker IMO) didn't play in the Final.
Happy days though.

It was pointed out a few years ago that the banners at England games tend to be from lower league teams supporters with very few from the Premier League. It was put forward that the fans of top sides are seeing a better standard of football at club level than at national and that the lower league fans get a chance to see a better standard at England games - although over the past year I would seriously question that.

Anything else is a poor substitute and international football is a sideshow for when club football isn't taking place.

Yes I think you're right fans in this country did used to really get behind the national team much more but years of dismal failure on the pitch coupled with these top players earning hundreds of thousands a week while punters can only earn £300/400 and still being shat on from a great height with extortionate admission prices has finally driven most fans to give up and just stay interested in their local club.

I'm not saying everyone has given up on them but a helluva lot have.
