I think if you are a committed fan to a club and watch them regularly then I would agree that it's club before country. On the other hand for armchair fans without a particular allegiance then maybe the national team ( when it's doing well) could take preference.

I notice that Alan did not say about his thoughts on Scotland in this context and wouldn't comment on the forthcoming game v England when Ray was trying to get an answer.
On the odd occasion when England have been doing well in a tournament eg 1990 and 1996 the pubs were chocka with fans but when as recently, they are doing poorly then
the support drops.
Being an old codger, I can remember 1966 and can assure that the country was well behind the team which, after a poor start , played well. My disappointment was that Jimmy Greaves( best England striker IMO) didn't play in the Final.
Happy days though.
