The thing is...you can't make a silk purse out of a sow's ear. He's been put in a very difficult position with a mediocre playing squad. Not that I rate Southgate, but I don't think it would make any difference if Guardiola was the manager. But I wouldn't be surprised if Capello is the last big name, trophy winning manager that England have in my lifetime. Unless it is someone at the absolute fag end of their career.
England are lucky they're in the European section and always get seeded. I was looking up the South American qualifying last night because I heard that Argentina had lost at home. They're currently in a play-off place, and Chile who won the last two Copa Americas, who have Sanchez who is arguably the best player in the Premier League and Vidal who is one of the best players in the world, are currently sixth and will miss out on the World Cup as it stands.
If England were up against Brazil, Uruguay, Ecuador, Colombia, Argentina, Chile, Paraguay, Peru and Bolivia they simply wouldn't qualify. That's five of the top six teams in the FIFA rankings in one qualifying campaign (the other being Belgium). Uruguay are also ranked in the top 10, and Peru and Ecuador are both ranked in the top 25. In England's group, Slovakia are the highest ranked at 28th and Scotland are ranked 44th. None of the rest are in the top 50, and yet Slovenia still looked better than England.
