The Decline of Britney Spears
Are we to assume Britney's peak was 1998-2012? I say this because generally her music between these years is well loved and critically acclaimed. I also loved Britney Jean (bar the lead single Work B*tch, which was ok but not amazing). Work, Pretty Girls and Make Me Ooooh ooooh ooooh, have been subpar.
I'm still looking forward to her new album but are we to assume the days of a massive Britney lead single are over. This is the woman who gave us Gimme More, Hold it Against Me, If U Seek Amy, 3, Circus, Piece of Me, Overtime, Born to Make You Happy, and Baby One More Time. Maybe I'm overreacting...I mean Me Against the Music & Womanizer were both poor lead single choices and we still got amazing albums to go with those campaigns (In the Zone and Circus). What are people's thoughts? |

You loved Britney Jean, think Womanizer is weak, therefore your opinion is utterly irrelevant.

Me against the music and womanizer were both great.
Her peak was 99-2009, don't think she will ever hit those heights again, not a fan of make me to be honest but looking forward to the new album none the less |

Britney was 1999-2004. It's been downhill ever since.

Womanizer is weak. Britney Jean had some good songs.

Once her sexy schoolgirl looks faded it was clear she wasn't going to supported by the song makers in the industry. She didn't have a good singing voice so there was only way to go really.
I feel for her actually, exploited and thrown away. |

1999-04 with a slight increase of interest from me with the Circus album. I can't think of anything I've liked of hers since she released Circus.

I've struggled with her since Femme Fatale. That was the last album by her that I bought. Never did like Britney Jean.
Don't like the new single either, sadly. |

The single is smashing all around the world so seemingly you're the minority, you don't like that or Womanizer but you liked Britney Jean, says it all really.

I'm enjoying the new single. I'd choose it over HIAM and Work.
The decline is understandable though. She's been going for nearly twenty years. I think the GP remained interested to see that she was well after her breakdown, she's had that come back already. BJ was an absolute disaster. We're over her not singing live, but now the dancing isn't up to scratch either. |

Just listened to 'make me'. Kind of what I was expecting really, nice enough but lacking in focus and energy. Which sums up Britney's career over the last few years, IMO.
Thats how her performance at the billboard awards came over to me, as well. Some performers have the talent and drive to keep on evolving and developing, but Britney isn't one of them. |

If your placing Britney Jean above the likes of Womanizer and Make Me then you really need your taste in Britney music re-evaluating.

I feel for her actually, exploited and thrown away. Spot on ![]() There is no ambition there, it might have been there before her massive breakdown, but it sure is not visible at all anymore. My first letdown was In the zone where she gave an interview and was really enthousiastic about performing and promoting and of course the playback show hit off straight away, back then I did not care but now it just annoys me, IMHO she nowadays just does this for fame and non music reasons, I do not really believe she is pushing herself, she is just a producer's pet and as long as the next album is on the payroll, everyone is happy. |

Britney's peak was definitely 1999-2004 but she has had good music since. Blackout is still her best album and has been critically acclaimed, but her personal life unfortunately overshadowed it. Circus and Femme Fatale are also decent albums, though FF gets boring after a while. Britney Jean wasn't great but it had a few decent songs on it (Work Bitch, Alien, Passenger, Don't Cry, Brightest Morning Star and Hold On Tight are my favourites from it) and Pretty Girls was awful. However her cover of Tom's Diner was really good and was popular with the fanbase. Make Me is good apart from the rap and I loved the snippet of Private Show from her new perfume commercial. I have high hopes for the new album now.

Yes BJ had some good songs, about 3 or 4. It was her worst album to date. Just realized you also said Pretty Girls was good. I just can't...

I still don't understand the hate towards BJ. I think I like it because I was going through a break up at the time and some of the songs hit home, like Til It's Gone, and It Should Be Easy. Then Body Ache had an epic 90s vibe going on, and some of her other tracks from it had nice vocals like Perfume and Now That I Found You.
Womanizer had boring lyrics, 'womaniser, woman, womaniser, you're a womaniser' and the subject matter was cliche. It surprises me that people say 1999-2004 is her peak when Blackout is her most popular album from 2007. |

Nearly every song by a major artist reaches #1 on iTunes though. That doesn't make it a hit. It didn't stay there long. I'd be amazed if it made the UK top 40 this week.

No you must have misread, I don't like Pretty Girls at all. I think it's her single worst song.
