Shouldn't she be back from Peru?

Given how private Eileen Derbyshire is and the fact that she's now well into her eighties, it seems likely that she's gone for good. She probably wanted it reported as her taking a six month break to avoid the attention of her taking her permanent exit from the show.

Was wondering the exact same thing. No mention of her being back filming and fewer mentions on screen. Perhaps that was her exit and she won't return.

I would have liked more for such an important and long-running character.

I think this may be the case. Eileen Derbyshire is particularly private so may have wanted to slip away without fuss.

I'm assuming she's retired. It's in keeping with Emily's character to leave the cobbles in modest fashion and without a fuss. After 50 -odd years on the show, she deserves a break.

Corrie last great exit for a long running character was Mike Baldwin, but since then it has been rubbish in this area.

I thought they did well for Blanche too. Hayley's departure was also well handled. Deirdre's funeral and aftermath was badly handled when it should have been the best of all. The writing was just no there and the whole wind in the Rovers was heavy handed.

I unfortunately think she has gone for good, she has taken completely silent breaks before and I think the brief storyline for this one is to explain a long term absence because she wont be returning.

I know she is private, but hopefully we do get indication from ITV that she has gone for good. She has been a part of the show since near the beginning (debuting in Episode 15) so it would be nice to know, especially to the long-running viewers. I guess they could insert it into dialogue if she does indeed choose to leave for good.

Jack Duckworth had one of the best exits in my opinion. Such a fitting end, for him and Vera.

Whatever happened to Liz's love interest of the week? That silver fox dude??

Is Amy still blackmailing her.

The funeral was a shambles, but they redeemed themselves when Peter returned.

I left that out and it's the best of the lot in my view because it also gave Vera the departure she deserved. Beautiful!

Yes, I'd hope they'd write some sort of "closure" into it that got rid of the faintly silly Peru aspect; it seems a bit ridiculous that she'd live out the rest of her days there so maybe we could learn that her volunteering stint is finished and she's decided to come back over and move out to the country. Her cousin Freda (or even Spider) could turn up in the Street and work on putting the house sale through, it all taking place without Emily needing to be seen. The obvious thing would be for Norris to buy the house.

Of course, if we're proved wrong and she's back soon for another few years of her quiet, dignified, sporadic contributions to the show, then so much the better!

He already owns it on the condition Emily could live there.

You sort of get the feeling she's decided to leave quietly but a bit of closure and a good old send off would have been nicer. If you look at some of the actors (especially longer term ones) faces you can see she's not coming back.

Could be another rare case like Ena Sharples where someone leaves the show without actually being killed off, which does suit both Eileen and Emily to be fair. Only Ken left from the super old guard then.

What do you mean, "if you look at their faces"?

(Thanks for clarification re house ownership, I didn't know that.)

Yes, Ena must be a very rare case where a departure had no "closure" written in whatsoever, not even an off-screen death years later.

I don't think she is coming back. I thought right from the start that the 6 month break announcement was a smoke screen so not as much fuss was made about it for some reason.

I think they'll just leave it low key, with various mentions that she's extending her stay or gone travelling somewhere else.

I found this:

Emily Returning

But it's not official. No official mention. It is possible she will just return without an announcement being made but I think it unlikely.

This is my view at present. It would make more sense to have her move in with Freda, but either way I'm not sure we will see her again.

I've just realised that I was wrong above in saying Freda is her cousin, she's her niece (through her marriage to Ernie).

I agree with this, the performances delivered by the actors when she left to go to Peru were not performances but real in my opinion. Rita in particular was very upset.

Oh, I see, now I get what Corrie_Fan2 meant above - their faces when she left...
