I imagine it's the same Andy that always existed
The HMs have softened towards him - especially now that their numbers have thinned out, so they are noticing him more and I think that relaxes him as he's taken some time to really find his feet in there. I imagine it's easier to be more sarcastic/humorous if you feel more relaxed with the people around you.

The 'new Andy' would have still been the old sulky weeping Andy had Jason not got rid of the two main tormentors of Andy .
