That was hard to watch. Everything in the episode was on point. The Carters thing at least broke up the sadness that needed to be the majority of the episode.

Everything was acted perfectly in my opinion. The Cokers and Ben were all very realistic and I found it pretty heartbreaking. At first I thought Les was off with his facial expressions as if he'd merely eaten a dodgy curry or something, but then at the end it made sense that he'd been holding it all in.

Now I feel even moreso that I wish they'd just given Ben & Paul a nice story. Ben goes through hell all the time, The Cokers are clearly constantly being punished too for some reason. Paul was a happy and vastly different character to most of the downtrodden and hardened people in the show. I would have preferred to see them actually give Ben and Paul a chance to run the business and have something uplifting for a change. I mean how much turmoil and tragedy can one fictional place actually have!!

Obviously with the actor leaving they had to do something but it's a shame maybe they didn't offer him anything long term before he decided to go.

Oh and I just remembered too. Was surprised when The Cokers returned from the hospital and the market people were waiting that Shrimpy didn't take his hat off out of respect!

Yes, I thought Roger Sloman did a great job. He clearly knew it was Paul when the police broke the news to them but kept it together for Pam's sake and allowed her time to accept the news and then grieve. I thought their scenes were really poignant and they conveyed the heartbreak without overdoing it.

Jonny Labey didn't leave of his own choice. They wrote him out. He said that he didn't want to leave, that unfortunately they wrote Paul out just as he was finally getting interesting, and as Jonny himself was really getting into it.

It was clearly a decision from the showrunner to write Paul out, to give him and Ben/Paul such a tragic ending. And I find this even harder to digest...if it had been the actor's choice, I would have accepted this outcome more easily!!

I think one important fact has been forgotten here - the Coker's will at least get staff discount for the funeral costs - every cloud etc.

Les is written as a larger than life comedy character - however when given something serious to do Mr Slowman is superb (Christine, or last night).

Roger has had a long and distinguished career.

People should remember that.

That is so annoying I actually really warmed to the guy. At first he seemed like he didn't have much purpose outside of being a love interest for Ben inbetween the Abi stuff but he's developed loads more recently as was said. They just brought up about his mum which could have turned into a longer term storyline too, so that makes no sense. As I said in my other post, considering how miserable the show can be and how often depressing and terrible things happen, it was a breath of fresh air Paul being a generally happy and nice character. They could have had a really interesting dynamic with him and Ben running the Cokers business but instead we have to go down the oh so predictable EE death and tragedy route. How annoying.

I like EE but as I used to say when I didn't watch it, it's so depressing. It seems like if ANYONE gets a brief glimpse of happiness then you know within days they're getting some enormous tragedy or some terrible situation to crap all over the happy spell. I know soaps are meant to be full of drama and aren't realistic when it comes to the amount of drama and life events...but surely they can have something nice once in a while. Plus how many tragic events can you expect some of these people to have before it goes from slightly unrealistic television to complete OTT madness? I'm surprised anyone in that square has the mental and emotional capacity to function at all with the amount of stuff they all go through on a weekly basis.

Just caught up on last nights episode and all I have to say is
BRILLIANT
The Cokers are underrated actors and their heartbreak and denial bubbling just under the surface was heartbreaking. I often feel sad watching EE, but I've only ever cried at it 3 times, Danielle's death, Pats death, and now Paul's.
Only bad thing was Harry Reid overacting slightly but otherwise the highlight of the year so far apart from Slater week. Well done EE
