It came to my attention when watching last nights episode, that the single episodes work so much better than the doubles. The pacing of them is spot on, I don't get bored, and there's always a nice mixture of characters, light scenes and storylines. They feel very natural.
In contrast, the double episodes are usually very tedious. Even when a strong storyline is going on, they can still bring the whole plot down. They feel a lot more contrived and the pacing is all over the place. The formula has been the same for years now. Build it up slowly in the first episode, so it can come to a cliffhanger (Which are most the time pretty naff), then in the second episode, have 5 minutes of drama at the beginning, before going to sleep for the rest. Monday's episodes were a clear example of this, in my opinion.
It's such a shame the show is increasing to six episodes, rather than cutting back. Four episodes a week (Preferably Sun, Mon, Wed, Fri), and Corrie would be the best soap on TV, if it produced good quality storylines.
