His face did look slightly suspicious when he told him, however it could have just been a look of fear as he's gay himself and maybe it scared him to think something like that could happen to him.

He was just shocked and scared that Paul was murdered for being gay. Brilliant moment with him and Ben at the end, you really got a sense of the horror they both felt, Ben for having lived through it and Johnny for imagining it.

the guy is pretty terrible at the old acting lark to be honest, casting people must have been drunk when they cast him

I don't know really - I have been wait months for the actor to slightly change expression - then again it must be hard when your face is made of solid oak.
