Having never been hit on the head by a sponge and the subsequently jumped into a pool I cant answer you. Her eyes weren't closed for very long though.

The helmet strap did catch on her throat, when she hit the water the helmet probably acted as a float for a second, applying more pressure. She probably blacked out for a second if it applied pressure to her carotid artery.

Her arms might have been moving, but that doesnt mean she wasnt out of it.

You feel like you're drunk after you back out, even if its for a split second. It can be quite debilitating and disorientating and last a good while.

Applying pressure to the neck in that way wouldn't render her unconscious, I played hitman on the xbox and it took a while to strangle someone.

Her arms wouldn't have been sculling the water keeping afloat, it was faked.
