ITV are planning a new dance program to try and blow Strictly out of the water.

The last one they tried a couple of years ago was rubbish and didn't get a second series. From the press descriptions, the new one sounds almost the same.

There is only one Strictly!

While ‘Strictly’ deals specifically with ballroom, it’s been claimed that ‘Dance Dance Dance’ will see celebrity pairs tackling iconic dance routines (not like ‘Let’s Dance For Comic Relief’, then), complete with special effects to “create a 3D world around the performance”.

The source adds: “ [The] budget will blow ‘Strictly’ out of the water as producers are planning to incorporate revolutionary special effects and recruit some huge names.

“This new launch will certainly unsettle the BBC as ‘Dance Dance Dance’ has the potential to knock their flagship show.

“The format of stars selecting their own partners is particularly appealing for the celebrity contestants as, unlike the curse of Strictly, no relationships are threatened.
Sounds riveting.

They will have to rivet viewers to the floor in order to get them to watch it.

And once again, ITV believes that a massive budget makes for a hit show. It does not.

It has taken over ten years for Strictly to build up its massive following. ITV won't be able to complete with that.

The only "huge name" ITV are liable to get is Tara Palmer Tompkinson. 20 letters.

Yeah but "big names" will probably equate to ITV nobodies

It sounds a bit confused. Learn a recognised dance style with an expert, and then perform a routine, is a simple concept. Recreate an iconic performance with special effects and a 3D background, with your own selected partner, sounds a bit messy to me. Like making a cake and cramming in all the ingredients you can think of.

Also, how many of these iconic performances will we have already seen on "Let's Dance for Comic Relief"?

Hopefully it won't include Madonna's Justify My Love. Or the original video for Frankie Goes To Hollywood's Relax!

The new series is bound to feature some of that TOWIE rabble.

Along with some Loose Women, and a cast member or two from Corrie or Emmerdale (who are barred from doing Strictly)

why does every dance show have to be a strictly rival? The show was a success in Holland last year but in no way is it anything like Strictly - as a person who likes dance will give it a go when aired

Not a huge fan of the concept. I've seen a couple of the let's dance for comic relief numbers in my time and they're always good fun but very very unlike strictly so I dont think it will really be competition. I will probably watch it but it doesn't look like it's really going to be a program for people who are really really into dancing more saturday night entertainment, even more so than strictly.

I would prefer if there was another so you think you can dance type show where you get professional dancers/dancers of a certain standard in their field to dance in a range of styles. I like to see how dancers trained in one discipline cope and adapt with another.

I think I would prefer like a longer term program though? Like take a couple of professional ballroom dancers, and a couple of professional ballet dancers and teach them to dance the others disciplines over a few months culminating in a final performance. I could see that on sky arts or BBC4 or something. Probably would only appeal to anoraks like me!

It sounds pretty rubbish and won't be on at the same time of year as Strictly anyway but one way I could see it being competition for Strictly is, as the article says, in terms of attracting contestants. I can see how celebs might choose to go for a show that sounds a lot easier, probably pays a lot more and which they can do with a wife/sibling/whatever so no seedy press rumours or jealous partners to deal with. I know people say it will get low-rent ITV people, but now Strictly are having people like Mark Wright on they can't exactly pretend they're any better and there were a few celebs on 'Stepping Out' that I don't think Strictly would've turned down.

Well, there'd be at least two of us watching!

So they are spending loads of money to CGI a minor celebrity and a "friend" into a music video, which originally had someone much more famous, and way more talented in it

Harry Enfield - The Bores at the local theatre "Terry Scott's Lear"

The format sounds dreadful and I don't think it'd last too long.

As much as I didn't think much of ITV's previous attempt to produce a dance show, I'm happy to give this new one a go.

Strictly started off based on STRICT tempo ballroom and Latin but has gradually drifted away from that almost entirely, and although some people prefer the 'old' style (I'm one of 'em) the ratings keep going up so the show is clearly doing something right, so ITV basing it's own show on different types of dance is probably right.

The thing that bothers me most is the idea of spending huge amounts on "special effects", which, for me, tends to spoil any dancing rather than adding to it - but that's just my opinion.

As for it knocking SCD out of the water - surely there is room for more than one dance show?

What do we reckon the chances are that the Jordan's will be judges?
