But it is their decision which channels they allocate to BBCB and which channels they allocate to COM7/8 which means I shall have access to BBC4HD for the duration of the Olympics then lose it again afterwards.

My Panasonic DMR-HWT150 did this as an optional channel update. Because the BBC have put a BBC 4 HD retune caption in the 700s it put that rather than LCN 106 in my favourites list and I had to delete any BBC 4 HD scheduled recordings and re enter them. Apart from that, unlike my Humax T-2, all the other scheduled programmes seem OK.
To be fair the BBC pop up did say that for technical reasons affected scheduled recordings would not be carried over at the change.

Having recently picked up a cheap HD box, primarily to try and get Vintage TV upstairs, I found myself initially struggling to pick up anything much (odd, given a relative not far away with an HD telly can receive the full whack). After a bit of bodging about I finally got the downstairs telly to pick up BBCB and COM8 - but not COM7, oddly. Which makes my hi-def choice several major channels and QVC Beauty. Alright then. When I rescanned the HD muxes to pick up this week's changes, the COM7 channels finally, albeit briefly, made an appearance, but don't often lock on when selected. Mind you, even BBCB's crumbly unless the aerial's on-point. We've always been a fringe area for telly to be fair, even back in analogue days, falling as we do between the cushions a bit (the cushions in this case being LWT and Meridian...)

If BBC4 HD ends up on COM 8 we lose it, it's at a lower power from Caradon Hill than is COM 7. We can *just* get COM 7 but not a sniff of COM 8.

OK, I can get it (BBC 4HD) on freesat but have to pipe it through from another room.

Thanks BBC - why can't you just leave things alone - or at least put them back how they were?

Why is it on a COM at all when there is space available on BBCB?

BBCB is looking pretty full currently, and that's before the sport starts demanding higher bitrates

Thanks for the French link (change to "lang=en" if you want English!) but how can CBBC HD be using all that space when it is only broadcasting a static caption?

It means that we people who get Freeview Lite can now get BBC Four in HD, only just noticed whilst programming the PVR.

Is that back to the original committee that looked into DTT, long before DSO, and the cable / satellites forced the decision to only have a limited number of channels on what became Freeview LIte. It was not a technical decision.

And also people who are normally restricted to six muxes but only for the duration of the games.

No, COM7/8 decision was made long after DSO. They are temporary and using old equipment, they were never going to be more than a restricted bonus to encourage Freeview HD take-up.

Exactly. It was down to what Arqiva could offer, and what was viable to offer.

Oh! Well my 2000T warned of changes and the possible loss of stations then asked if I want to retune with the option to cancel.

Imagine the delight of people when they realise they can now get BBC4-HD, only to have that turn to anger when it disappears again in a few weeks!

That's probably why the BBC haven't publicised it much, most of them will be blissfully unaware.

I'm sure my 2000T probably did. But I wasn't watching and it timed out and retuned anyway. Ended up with no timers set and tuned into the wrong region.
With retunes nearly every other week, it is time Humax put a stop to this behaviour.

Most will probably become aware soon, especially when it starts transmitting Olympic events.

But how would they know to select LCN106 when it isn't something they would normally do? And that's only if they've also done a retune which I only did because I read about it here.

Most HD receivers should add it without the need for a retune. Some receivers will alert you to the existence of an HD channel when tuning to the SD channel (although this only works if the relevant flag has been set, which it seems only the BBC does).

So how many people here - who couldn't previously receive BBC4HD - have had a message on their screen telling them they can now get it?

Me! Or rather I'd just spotted BBC4 HD had just appeared when I was trying to make a swift exit from Celebrity Big Brother. Could've done with spotting it was there before the Mahler prom.

Not just the BBC. Channel 5 does as well.

Me for one, but only on 3 out of 4 of active receivers.

But do you get the HD message when you switch to BBC FOUR on channel 9?

Thanks, I hadn't spotted that, Channel 5 HD being only a recent addition.

My programme guide for 106 says "BBC Four HD Has Moved for the Olympics" and selecting 106 displays a message about retuning.
