I bought an MP3 player from Amazon and it was poor. The reason I bought out-dated tech in 2016? The Galaxy S6 has no SD card slot for my MP3's. I was ranting to the wife and said I wish I'd kept my old S4 just for the music player capabilities. A lightbulb moment ensued where I realised I could buy an old smart phone, stick it in airplane mode and use that. The issue is finding one.

Any Google search brings up new phones, contracts and the best cheap high end smartphones. I don't want the latest or greatest, I literally want an Android phone with a micro-SD slot which will take 32GB cards. Any brand will do. The one site I found was in the USA, and it seems the LG800 (which the guy bought dirt cheap, new) wasn't released in the UK.

Sadly my knowledge of smartphones is limited to the top end models. My first was an S2, then S4, now S6. I can tell you the top models around those releases, but the lesser models have passed me by. Even the S2 is still a bit pricey. Any suggestions will be gratefully received.

Thanks

No need - buy one of these. Very small and unobtrusive.

That's not the genuine price thankfully - thought it was £11.40 at a glance

About a tenth of that on eBay.

Buy an old Sony like the Z3 Compact which has decent Walkman music software or an Amazon fire phone second hand, although I'm puzzled why the lack of an SD card stops you putting MP3's on your phone unless it's because of lack of storage space.

plenty of £30-£50 android phones from argos if you want to buy from high street. Another option is cloud backup (which you should do anyway if you have a fair amount of music) to use your galaxy S6 to stream your own music if it doesnt fit on the phone. google music lets you back up your own music for free without subscribing to the all access

Thanks for the suggestions.

The S4 is too expensive, even the S4 mini is too expensive. I don't need a powerful phone, or a huge screen, literally just a colour screen and the ability to put a 32GB SD card into it. You also seem to pay for the brand, it doesn't need to be Samsung, HTC, or LG. I do need Android though, as I'd like to still be able to use my Google account over wifi.

The plug in SD card looks good, but sadly I need the port free as it will be for use mainly in the car and I can't charge and play. A second phone in airplane mode won't use much battery when in use, and will not be in use when I'm working.

My main issue with the lack of SD card slot in the S6 is my music is all on a 32GB card, and it's full. I have about 7GB left on the device, but that's a lot less than I'm used to and once it's filled I will struggle to download apps, get pictures etc. etc. I do have an MP3 player, but there is no library feature on it meaning playing an album is a pain as you have to do this by file explorer mode. I have all the albums by Bullet For My Valentine, and where the device truncates file names I have no idea which album I'm going into, and even then all the file names are truncated too, so I have to play the first song to find out! When you're used to Google Music which is awesome it's a nightmare. I also have 14 months left on the contract so upgrading to the S7 isn't an option.

Can't you just use play music? Its free for music you already own. Install the app on your computer and it will sync your media folders to Google. Then you can either stream them on your phone or choose to download the albums you want.

That's precisely what I was going to say - just upload the 32GB of music on the card to Google Play, and voila - accessible on pretty much every connected device you have.

Then get lots of Chromecast Audio's and stream to every room in your house...

You keep saying too expensive without actually saying what you are able to spend.

Great idea but the OP will still need space for the cache, which incidentally doesn't save to external SD.

EDIT: It seems you can save to external SD. my apologies.
